    Richard, a “how to recover from bad flash tutorial” would be gold, and please include how to get back to your original flash/GUI, be it TP Link or Netgear etc.
    Your videos are great.

    I've been using DD-WRT for a number of years now, probably a decade. It is great to breathe life into an old router, giving it high end capabilities and robust performance. When you install DD-WRT into some decent old hardware that's supported, that router will be like the Energizer Bunny in my experience: It just keeps going, and going! My last install was on this old b/g D-Link router, three years back. I've been using it as a wireless bridge / repeater since.
    Now, mind you, trying to install DD-WRT using the info on the DD-WRT Wiki can be daunting. In my case, I spent an entire afternoon getting that old D-Link set up and going three years ago! Part of that was because of a peculiarity of my particular model number when bridging, that I eventually found a wiki entry for. But even with the best of cases, you could spend a lot of time converting a router to DD-WRT, at the risk of converting it into a brick if you're not careful.
    I just got this TP-Link TL-940N, v3. I Googled it for DD-WRT and Richard, your video was near the top. I have to say, you saved me a lot of time! I've done this before a number of times, downloading the proper .bin's, doing hard resets, the whole 9 yards. But I watched your video (OK, 30 minutes) took brief notes on the bullet points, and converted my 940N in a few minutes... Like Butter!
    Great Job, Richard! Now... Maybe you can answer a question: I did this because I had problems with the original TP-Link Firmware in setting up a Wireless Bridge / Repeater. I've done it before, in particular with the b/g router I'm using now. But my Zoom Meetings keep dropping out. No other real problems in three years, but now that I'm Zooming more, I'm thinking having an N router as opposed to a G should stop the freezing vid and dropped meetings I'm getting in Zoom. For some reason I was having problems with this TP-Link configuring it as a Bridge / Repeater with the stock firmware. So I said, OK, I'm putting in DD-WRT, and configure that as a Bridge / Client.
    Well, I got 'er up and running, put in the first Firmware: factory-to-ddwrt.bin, after the 18005 error, thanks to your workaround (Thanks for that, too! I probably would have spent two hours tracing that down!) Then upgraded to the 40559 Beta webflash.bin. It all went rather smoothly and a lot faster than if I had to do it on my own.
    Now comes the rub: I went in to Wireless Settings, and wanted to change the Mode to Repeater Bridge. But it isn't there! Just Bridge. No Repeater, and certainly no Repeater / Bridge.
    Do you know of another version that won't brick this little beauty that would give me the capability? I keep seeing v6 come up for v3. Perhaps it's (almost) the same hardware? Is there a way to use some other generic DD-WRT package?
    It's a nice router, especially now that it's a DD-WRT router! But it's lacking the _one_ feature that was the whole reason I converted!
    Anything you can suggest, and I'll smoke some fish or chicken for you, or send you some pickled tomatoes! ;-)
    Thanks for all your hard work!
    Take Care,
    Mike

Fast forward to tonight, and here I am with a successfully flashed router, this after the router went unused for almost 2 years. @richardlloydusa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately not all routers have enough internal memory or CPU speed to incorporate Open VPN so if it's not in your DD-WRT firmware those are most likely the reasons.
      You will most likely need a better router. Fortunately you can buy a very capable router that does Open VPN quite cheaply on eBay (under $30). I'm going to be doing a video on my FAVORITE DD-WRT routers the Netgear R7000 eBay(paid): ebay.us/412mq6 and my second favorite the Netgear R7000P eBay(paid): ebay.us/MI3xCQ . My third favorite router is the TP-Link Archer C9 eBay(paid): ebay.us/KfVRHK Check them out. If you want to do OpenVPN these routers will do it!
      (Affiliate links. Helps me on TH-cam and does not cost you any extra if you use them)

    What are the benefits of replacing the original firmware with the DDWRT firmware?

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on what your goals are. Stock firmware on most routers is for the most part highly simplified in what you can do with it. It makes sense from a support point of view to limit options to the most wanted options and give you very little wiggle room to adjust those options because you are less likely to meet with failure and then call them to support it. I have many DD-WRT videos on my channel and I plan to make more. To give you an example this video shows a procedure that I also did on this very same router using the stock firmware. Though you can make it work either way you have more options for higher security on the DD-WRT firmware over the stock. Check out the DD-WRT website and their forum for further information. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

The first file was successfully flashed. Is it okay to use this on the current factory-to-ddwrt-us.bin file firmware only?? Please tell an alternate method to flash the second file... • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      DD-WRT betas come with two files and you should flash first the factory-to-ddwrt-us.bin then the actual main file after the reboot. Both files need to be flashed in order to use the current update version. Make SURE you are using the correct version for your router. Look at the physical sticker on the router. My WR940N shows a version 6 in the router web status page but it is actually a version 3 (some sort of glitch in the software) I used the version 3 firmware update from the DD-WRT beta downloads. Thanks

I looked and there is a download from DD-WRT for my model. I already updated my router to the latest firmware V2 from the Linksys site, which was V2, last updated in Apr 29, 2014. And the next version V3 is not allowed to be installed on my V2 router. This means it is updated to the most current as far as Lynksys support. I have to change the valve cover gaskets on my Santa Fe V6 2003 which requires a good amount of disassembly (removing the intake manifold) and I will probably do the wires and plugs at the same time. @@richardlloydusa thank you for your time Richard, i tried to put this beta firmware for my tl-940n v6, used the beta, had to do the scripts, and only upgrade to the 1st step, not the web flash one, tried several times, it just show the progress bar below the warning and does nothing, i had to do the restore with tftp as you shown in your other video, any idea why it wont let me?

    What ddwrt files would you recommend for archer a7 v5 1.1.4 Build 20211022 rel.58866?

      I use the beta firmware and currently I have the r48296 firmware running on a TP-Link WR940N V3, TP-Link WR841N V9 and a Netgear R7000 without issue. I can't verify that it will work well on yours as I don't have an A7 though. Here is the link for the r48296 firmware dd-wrt.com/support/other-downloads/?path=betas%2F2022%2F02-05-2022-r48296%2F
      I take NO responsibility for your results. Good luck. Thank you so much for commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

      Al elegir el firmware ddwrt para versión 6 me dice error 15008. Seguí esos 8 paso explicados y volví a insistir con ese software del ddwrt y aparece mismo cartel de error 15008.

    No. It did not work at all. I tried after upgrading to stock latest version and no same error. Tried upgrading two times same way by entering code and same error while upgrading.

      This router does not have enough free memory to run OpenVPN I have a video on how to use the router as a VPN router using DD-WRT here: th-cam.com/video/Ag7WjDOC3fI/w-d-xo.html You can also do it with the stock firmware but DD-WRT will give you more options. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
