I have read in several places that Val Lehman despised Elspeth Ballantyne (Meg Jackson/Morris) but I have never read anything that suggested that they were less than professional on-set.
She did die in the series, but I always fantasised that it was a ploy to make them believe it was her body that was found after the fire and that in reality she had escaped! :-)
If you watch and read Val has waffled back and forth over the years with her like and dislike of the character and show. Most of the other actress have too. Val claimed at one time that she was shocked by Erica being written out of the show and found out they has a similar plan for her. The plan was for Nola to become the new main "Top Dog," but then Val stopped this by demanding her contract be extended. Then she turned around and quit not long after.
Bea "died" in episode #536. Ann told Meg that Bea has died in the fire trying to stop the riot at Barnhurst. From what I have read, the network wrote Bea out "permanently" in this way so that the fans would stop bugging them to bring her back, as she had no desire to revisit the series. I tried to find the exact air date for this episode but couldn't. Given the timeframe of the series, I would say that 1985 is more plausible than 1986.
I saw an interview on tv years ago where Val and elspeth said they had originally been put forward and auditioned to play each others parts but the producers decided they were both better suited to play the characters they ended up playing
She was killed in a fire at Barnhurst. Ann Reno specifically tells Meg this in one of the episodes immediately preceding the influx of inmates (to include Nora Flynn) that are transferred from Barnhurst to Wentworth due to the fire damage. It is my understanding that the writers did this in order to stop the constant requests and/or speculation regarding a return of Bea Smith.
Wow, they look no different. I would still like to believe that Bea in fact escaped the fire at the the prison she was transferred to and that the body they found was that of a prison officer even more evil than Vinegar Tits or The Freak and Bea had knocked her out and swapped clothes!
Just ignore it. They brought Myra's husband back from the dead. And gave her a couple of kids too. I love PCBH, it's my favorite show, but it was not the most realistic show in th world.
Val always shows up to the reunions and everything Prisoner related. even wanted to be cast as governor in the new Wentworth.. perhaps Val thought leaving Prisoner and ripping the heart out of the show (thank god for the Freak) wasn't such a good idea after all.
Yeah pixie could of carried it a long way... (kidding) they could of brang in a new villain or made ferguson need help to control the women just to spice things up
Val Lehman was Spoiled...She had to be nice to her Fans for Publicity reasons ...However Val was extremely Hard to work with ...epecially forwas a subordinate actor just learning the Ropes...ANd most of the script and new actors had to be secretly ok...ed by Lehman on the Q....T.....Not to mention Helen Ready was in Que to sing the Theme song "ON THE INSIDE" But Lehman presently an enormous tirade over the matter ...Grundy was forced to Rescend and gave the Contract to Lynn Hamilton instead..
This clip just goes to show that Val Lehman and Collette Mann could still credibly play their PCBH characters. Why don't Grundy's or whatever they are called nowadays seriously consider bringing the series back? Neighbours is dire nowadays and could easily be replaced by a reinstated PCBH.
So if they found her body, how did she also escape alive? I knew Bea was a bit of a toughie but to escape a fire alive despite burning to death just says it all :D Actually this sounds like a typical plot. Did you ever write any of their episodes? :D

I have seen and read some other cast members in Val's company, even in photos, but I've not heard them say that they were friends with Val.

The freak overstayed her welcome long ago she should of been written off atleast in the 500s and not their until the last episode

I've heard alot of people hated Elspeth behind the scenes. I think it was something to do with money/expenses wasn't it? :(
