  • OK SO I DID IT!! subscribe for more at-home hair videos :).DEMO at 2:33. PS: just want to say that i am not a pro and obviously this didn't turn out perfect! but i always document my at-home hair fun for you guys :). The purpose of me doing this was to give a more blended root so that I can give myself highlights later on...ultimately I wanted to transition from solid bleach to foils which I will do myself and document a how to diy foils/highlights later on :)
    EDIT: a few dys later i ended up going to the salon to have them bring it down further (you'll see in my next videos) - always know when to go to a salon :) :)
    This method can also be used if your roots are already grown in and very harsh - just pull it down a little further than regrowth.

    This is LITERALLY the video I NEEDED! I have been bleaching my entire head for about 8 months and I just wanted a shadow root so it’s not so shocking as it grows out and I just was worried it was going to look too harsh, you know? Thank you soooo much for sharing! 💕

    I've done this to mine a few times....best way I've found for best root smudge and a good graduation of colour ...put the darker colour in roots first like Normal root application...then after that ..use a wide tooth comb ..and comb down from root about two or three inches...so much easier if your doing it yourself....and really gives an amazing natural root smudge....with taking a full head blonde to more balayage. ...take darker root further down ...and comb to ends from darker colour. ..do not add anymore colour ..just comb through using colour you already applied ...
    Yes I am a stylist so not talking outa my ass lol .....just trying to make it easier for you beautiful ladys xx

      Question for ya , do I have to wait for my natural root color to grow out before I attempt a root smudge? I’m a natural level 5 and bleached my hair to a level 11. What color should I buy for a root smudge? Would I use a number 5ash Demi? Won’t ash turn blonde hair green if I pull through hair? I have a lot of red undertones so if I don’t use an ash won’t my root smudge look warm if I use anything other then an ash? Would love to hear your response. Thanks 🙏

    hey girl I don't know if you're still doing the Shadow on yourself, and I'm not sure how old this video is, but just some advice for next time if you're still doing it...it came out really well considering you're not a licensed professional. Just the tip next time, take a comb and drag the color down a little bit so it Blends a little bit more. Just comb the colors through it doesn't have to be too far but it'll help to blend out those harsh lines a little bit, it will be even more natural! also people tend to be warmer tones toward the roots, so you may want to add a little bit of 8n to the mix just so it's not so muddy it will compliment the blond even more and balance out the tones to keep it uniform and complimentary, but I think you did a wonderful job! it looks great on you♡

      I heard you say you use 7a, you should of only used an 8 bc it would of been a bit lighter. I agree you should a neutral or just buy 8na and comb through so that it blends away those harsh lines/blotches.

    HI short Tip from a stylist. Backcomb the roots (tease) 3-4 times with a teasing comb. Then apply color to that root area. Then if you want to make it more fluid take a conditioning treatment (like Olaplex 2) and paint that to the ends smudging and blending at the line of demarcation. (Diluting the color a bit for flow effect.)
    When the hair is rinsed and brought back down in place it will have that flowing shadow effect better and you will have a nice conditioning treatment done.

    • @kaivickers166

      Heather McManus Sheflyzskyz - but you can’t get Olaplex 2 without being licensed. Would 3 work the same way?

    • @stacydavidson3736
      @stacydavidson3736 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kai Vickers u can buy it on Ebay and many other places but no3 or any conditioner will do. I do the same with foils if only roots need doing, so that the a) the foil has something to grip onto & b) so the bleach or high lift doesn't touch already pre lighted mids&ends when folding my foil xx

      Amy Leigh she can just use color fix to remove it when she wants solid blonde again, it takes out permanent colour with no damage. I've used colour rewind (same thing in my country) multiple times and it works perfectly for this type of thing

    I think it turned out great. A good advice to this technique is to use a tooth comb to create a more smooth smudge look to blend the two tones together (the bleached color with the root color). Or you could use a smudge brush which looks like a make up powder blush to create this look as you apply the dye.

    If you do it again then next time all you need to do is comb it through after with a wide comb once , not repeatedly. That ensures blending. And also another way to blend it better is once you have root tapped your colour all over is to just go through your whole head and rub the coloured areas slightly into the non coloured areas thus blending out so there is no line. I usually tone after with a purple toner right up to the ends overlapping the blond with partially the rubbed in colour leavening out your inch from the root. Hope that helps xx

  • @teakoala966
    @teakoala966 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I did this a few months back now, wishing I had done a video but I was too scared to mess up. I think it's key to go a little bit further down than you want and blend with fingers to the rest of the hair. If I ever do it again, not that I need to because my roots are growing in quite naturally I'd film it because there is such a gap in advice with this.

    • @baskamondra5999

      I think it's a good idea! personally, I never used this technique and probably I won't soon but the first thing I thought about was blending new color with fingers after applying it. anyways, I would watch your video

  • @delladream_

    I think it looked good. When you’re doing your hair at home you can do it several times to correct tiny imperfections. This was really helpful to me because no matter how much toning my hot roots would NOT budge, used this and it just looks like my natural grow out. Love it thanks.

    @somegirljess I like that even though it didn't turn out exactly the way you wanted, still you share it with the world, in hopes of helping someone, as you always do 😊. I did this to myself a few months ago following the ellebangs tutorial and it turned out pretty good. I believe if you'd have gone a little bit further down you would've liked it better. I don't know if I could share some pics of the process in here, because I did took photos just to have them as reference, for friends that would ask me how I did it. Anyways, love your videos as always, and if you really want the more low maintenance look of the rooted blonde hair try again the ellebangs method, and don't be afraid of going down a little bit more. Oh!! also, I used a comb( after I finished dyeing diagonally ) all over the hair(but parting it all over again diagonally) in a somekind of blurring motion over the dyed roots just to blend it a little with the blonde or you could use your finger tips. This will help with the transition from darker to lighter. Sorry if you can't understand something, as english is my second language. I hope this might help you somehow 😘

    I asked my dad who is a barber to bleach my henna out (I know, omg). For some reason he did my root regrowth too as well so I have ash blond roots, then a patch of WHITE on top and underneath, and the rest is like a strawberry gold colour. It looks so botched. I'm hoping I can just darken the white part and it will look more natural. The mid section of my hair is horribly damaged now from me trying to lift the henna :( but the newer hair at my scalp is in good condition for me to smudge and hopefully look more natural. Hope I don't make it look even worse though :/

    Personally. I thought it looked good before you did anything. The contrast between your natural color and the bleached hair is nice. I don’t understand the concept of only dying some roots and not all. I think it would make a lot more sense to do the entire head and pull some down the strands to create more dimension or not rinsing with cold water to prevent it from bleeding because the bleeding actually gives a very nice effect if the color used works well with the bleached hair to begin with. It will not remain as dramatic as it fades.

    Ok I figured something out. To keep the root shadow color from bleeding onto the blonde. While it's processing, wet the blonde hair and add a clear filler. You can even mix w/ a little conditioner to add a protein treatment. This will help keep the color from bleeding. Tries cold water but if your hair is really porous-ugh. Also, funny how all of these other videos are about making your hair gray or silver-odd trend. Kind of aging don't you think (unless you luv it then rock it)

    I have silver hair and overgrown roots, I'd like to do this on myself. I'm not sure whether I should use a semi or demi permanent color? I have very dark brown hair so I'm not sure!

      Meggy Makasiar semi will wash out after a couple weeks. Demi will last but will fade in colour.😊

    I have a question. So next month when your roots grow in how do you do them and than do you have to bleach the smudged. roots blonde again?

    • @somegirljesskent
      @somegirljesskent  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carol Steele my goal in this was to give myself roots so that I could put highlights on top. I wanted a highlighted look as opposed to straight across harsh roots. So this was step 1 :) - I then went to a salon to get highlights on top of my root smudge

    • @jennifermiranda7674
      @jennifermiranda7674 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best to do is to use demi permanent colors to create this look since it slowly fades. Then, you can either remove the color with color remover or bleach it if it is not lifted enough underneath as the rest of the hair. Next lighten the regrowth to an orange yellow level so that the demi color level 6-7-8 you add to the roots can deposit at show.

    So all you need is a 10 developer?

  • @unoriginalname04
    @unoriginalname04 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    what is your natural hair color? It looks dark brown, but it may just be due to the contrast,as the bleached parts are super light. I'm only asking because I would like to bleach my dark brown hair and I was wondering if I can achieve your level of lightness

    • @somegirljesskent
      @somegirljesskent  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, it is just the contrast that makes it look that dark. but my natural hair is a dark blonde, probably somewhere between a level 6 and 7, and i tend to have lighter blonde natural highlights. If yu decide to bleach your natural dark brown, use a 30 volume developer. You could use 40 volume , but i don't recommend it unless you have insanely healthy hair. You would likely to have to bleach once with 30 or 40 vol, it would turn gold, and then you would bleach again with a lower volume developer (20). that would take it from gold to yellow, in which you could tone. obviously this is tricky but it can be done!

    • @unoriginalname04
      @unoriginalname04 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey, thanks for the reply. I have a whole plan on how to bleach my hair. I was surprised to see your hair so dark as your skintone and eye color are very light, but now it makes sense why it bleaches to such a beautiful color. Lol I'd never go near a 40 volume!! I've colored my hair before with semi permanent and recently stripped all the color, so it's a bit damaged on the ends, I was thinking about getting olaplex and doing it myself at home, as it costs a fortune in the salon. Prices are astronomical, don't know who can afford it. Plus I don't really trust hair stylists :/ No one knows what you want out of your hair better than you, you just have to do lots of research..Anyway I'll definitely film a video if I end up going for it, just gonna leave my hair to recover from the stripping a month or so :D

    I’m a color expert. 10 volume developer is Not. No lift. Developer. And best to see a salon. OR use an acidic Demi. No lift deep blonde shade mixed with 5 volume developer. Lots of hard work here. Really easier when done in a salon. Applauding the massive effort here. Beth. I do not recommend use of permanent color to do this! Be careful. See a salon colorist! Good luck!

    • @somegirljesskent
      @somegirljesskent  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      aw thank you! thankfully mine just lifts really easily. I think it helps that my natural colour isn't all that dark, and my hair is not course or resilient. Sadly some people's hair is just really stubborn and wont lift past the orangey stage ever. :(

    • @MsTopcat55
      @MsTopcat55 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jen Covert there are charts that show what your lifted color will be from your base. Sometimes you can’t get higher. I started out a dark blonde/light brown and after bleaching twice I still have some red in my brassy blonde!

    do you know if you can mix the wella color additives (042 warming gold) to other dyes that aren't by wella such as the ion permanent color liquid?

    • @somegirljesskent
      @somegirljesskent  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Emily I don't know sorry! My instinct says that it would probably be okay as long as they are both liquid products like you say. But also, as an additive, it might need some ingredient in the actual wella dyes to work properly. I probably wouldn't do it personally, but you could always try a test piece of hair before you did the whole thing

      Lisa Troyekens haha well my real roots are very harsh and straight across because my hair is all one solid colour. By giving myself a root that isn't as straight across, now I can transition to giving myself highlights so that I don't have to touch up my roots every 4 weeks which is a hassle
