I am extremely impressed by your video as it explains my long achilles tendonitis problem. Just had a MRI done to rule out any ruptures as the pain continued even rest for almost two months as advised by the physiotherapist. Although I didn't stop my running in totality cos I still go for my walks. But after seeing this video with the explanations given I am encouraged to start my running again. Wow! Thanks a lot. Thanks for your videos. They allowed me to realize my shoes were not appropriated. Just added a couple of millimeters high to the heel sole, and stronger cushioning that helps me to get a better bounce instead of force the bounce in my tendons. That sole change got my achilles tendons healed in two or three weeks ☺️
I had a tear( not rupture) and the pain went away for a little while and then the lump came and it hurts all the time. Once it’s stretched out it’s not as bad but exercise or running is not possible and have gained weight because of it. I describe it as feeling like a dry rotted rubber band. I limp until it’s warmed up
PLEASE do not do what I did. I injured both Achilles 15 years ago, and being a dancer, I just ignored it. Well now I'm 48 years old with 2 messed up Achilles and can barely walk for more than 15 minutes without VERY severe pain. I had to stop dance, the one thing I LOVED because the sports medicine docs believe I'll rupture them. I have years of recovery because I let it go "waiting" for it to just get better. Get it treated now so you're not unable to walk in your 40's
Same…. My heel developed a bump on the bursa sac where the tendons connect. The bump got huge over the past 3yrs. I 1st noticed pain in the tendon area back when I had an 8 hr drive. That weekend my foot hurt bad the entire time on my trip. Now I recently developed a bump on the back of my heel (but more on the inner side of the heel) so now I have bone spur things on both feet. I’m 41 and need to lose like 50lbs . I lost 35lbs since May. I have back pain too. I’m a mess. My feet are so painful 😖 I can’t even massage the injured heels, cuz the pain will make me howl at the moon. I’m aching right now as I’m standing up writing this post .. FML
I abused both Achilles 15 years ago by thinking it would be a fantastic idea to attempt Irish Dance in my 30's. Being a dancer I ignored it, kept dancing (NOT Irish) until I could no longer walk for more than 10 minutes. Seriously, don't wait. Now I have a 2 year recovery and can't do any kind of heavy load on either Achilles because I chose to tough it out
feel sorry for anyone with achilles tendon problems i suffered badly in my younger days when training for the marathon its a persistent pain that never seems to go away i stopped training years ago and now and again it still flares up think ive weaken it with all the running always in my left leg never had any trouble with my right leg think my tendon wasnt as strong in my left leg
I had the same problem for 3 years. My advice,put it in ice for 30 minutes each night. Change all the inner souls of your footwear to expensive ones,and wear trainers as much as possible. The ice is the most important,every single night without fail,and gentle massage as well. Also try and elevate your foot as much as possible. Eventually this will heal,but it takes time. Be patient

Brilliant. I have this - caused by a fortnight of harder manual work than I was used to when building foundations and kneeling, squatting, lifting, deadlifting bags of cement and wet concrete etc just a sudden and prolonged overloading of the Achilles. I then played some cricket which finished me off. My NHS occupational health physio told me that I have to do high loads and no stretching or gentle exercise. Result? - after 3 months I had more pain and a larger lump. I spoke with an old colleague of mine who is a specialised podiatrist and he basically told me all the physiology in this video plus some and set me on the right path. It turns out the technique my physio was telling me was old research aimed at young, elite athletes and now not even practised by the person who developed it in the first place.

Yes, this is what happens in all tendons when you have tendinopathy. However, the type of lump you get in the digitorum longus tendon is usually more a cyst which is something totally different. So you may want to make sure which one you have. I’m not sure what causes a cyst to develop.

You mentioned the blood vessels can move in and out of the tendon depending on how injured it is. I was wondering - where do the blood vessels come from when inserting into the tendon and where do they retreat back to once it's healthy?
The body is constantly changing itself in reaction to what is going on - building different things and breaking them down again when needed. The blood vessels develop as part of the injury process (it may be linked to helping the tendon heal but researchers aren't yet sure) - the body creates them - and as the healing process happens the tendon's structure changes back to normal and the blood vessels disappear.
If the lump is towards the middle of the tendon, it would probably be Achilles. If it's at the bottom of the tendon, where it inserts into the heel bone, it could be tricky to tell the difference. Maybe this video will help: th-cam.com/video/B1LMKwEZ5mo/w-d-xo.html

To answer your question, one has to actually be able to observe what you mean and assess you properly. It might be silent tendinopathy (you get it that it doesn't cause pain) but it is uncommon to have two lumps. So, I think you need to go see your doctor and get it properly checked out to make sure it isn't something more serious.
Can it happen if you go to a chiropractor and they pull your legs real fast and vigorously there is no pain. It’s the size of a quail egg a little bit smaller.

How painful those things usually are? I'm not sure if I had old left side achilles injury but I started to experience morning stiffness right after I started distance running 23months ago and condition is sometimes better, sometimes worst and I'm having 123day running streak now which I started during Covid19 lockdown. I have been doing eccentric work, favouring zero drop shoes, stretching and massage at side of tendon and feel those things keeps me going = doing the thing I love to do. Not sure is it wise but I'm 41yo and would be devastating to stop running.
I forced my foot into a new boot, injured my tendon while trying that. No actual excercise, but i do have a lump and i could barely step on my injured foot 2 days ago. I don't run, cycling is my sport and i've never had any problems with my achilles tendor before. I run and ride a bike, is it okay to ride the bike while it is healing? I injured the achilles about 4 weeks ago and have been taking it easy, walking, riding and I have done a couple short jogs to test but it still hurt. Last run was about a week ago. I do work construction so I am on my feet all day walking and going up and down ladders. I guess another question I have is will my work strengthen it? FYI I injured it in a rucking race in very hot weather in Houston. I had done many races in the past with no injury.

It sometimes happens in old persons who are not running or any specific exercise. What about loosing strength due to aging and lack of exercise leading to weak tendon???
Yes absolutely - it is actually quite common in older people and often some of the medications they take can also predispose them to this. My lump is where the tendon attaches to the heel. It is also offset a little to side. I suspect I have a bursitis. A good indication of this (apparently) is pain when standing on tip toes! It's agony.
Hi Dawid, when you're 15 you still have a growth plate where your Achilles tendon attaches. Look up Sever's disease - it is more likely that you have that. I would suggest that you consult a physiotherapist because your exercises have to be set at the right level. Do not do the regular exercises that you see people doing for Achilles tendinopathy - the condition is different and requires a different approach.
I have a lump on my Achilles. At first it was in alot of pain but now most of the pain went away but the bump is still there. Does this eventually go away or heal?
I have a weird question. I live in a house for passed three years, that has a slight slant in it. For some odd reason in those past 3 years I have bumps on both Achilles the right bigger then the left. I can barely walk in the morning. And I'm not recovering it's not getting better with compression, icing or resting. I'm not an athlete or dancer. Just a teacher who stands on my feet like 2 days out of the week. I'm just reposting my comment here in case you missed it on the other video: You usually have to do a strength training programme so that the tendon can get strong again. I have a lump ( swollen part with some liquid) in my feet , lower to archilles . I have it almost 3 years now . Once i got running or stand for long day , the lump starts to get irritation. Hi Lewis, Yes you can get tendinopathy in that part but it may be good to exclude other causes by getting a doctor to look at it and having a scan as it is not very common to feel a lump when you have tendinopathy in that part.
Played a baseball tournament September 2020 and could barely walk afterwards. 2 years later, I still have a tender lump. It's like having a 3rd testicle, it's fine until there is the slightest bump or pressure along it. I realize now this is going to be here the rest of my life. You're better off breaking all your bones than injuring an achilles.

Strength training is your answer. When you strength train, it stimulates the tendon to form new cells and remodel the old ones, repairing the tendon. As it repairs the tissue becomes more robust and less sensitive and over time you will notice that shoes are no longer an issue. If it's been there for a year or longer, then it will take about 12 to 18 months of being consistent with your strength training to get rid of the lump. What exercises you should start with and how to progress it, will very much depend on your activity goals and your tendon's current capacity. This lump came after I fell & twisted my ankle....my ankle was swollen and I couldn’t walk on it for a few days. Soaked it in epsom salt, elevated my leg & stayed off of it, but this painful lump on/or above my Achilles’ tendon remained. I try to do toe lifts on the injured but I simply cannot. Feels like my foot is turning or being pulled outward. Ouch! How do I heal it?

Hi Noe, it may affect your skiing but I can't really tell without assessing you. Using a heel lift in your ski boot may also help but I'm giving this advice without knowing you and your case so please be careful as it may not be right for you. xm

Hello! If you have any advice that would be great. My partner has extreme pain in his Achilles tendon and we have seen multiple orthopaedic doctors. We've had two MRI's and misdiagnosis of old breaks, os trigonum etc. Now, we are sure its achillies tendonitis. His tendon is EXTREMELY tender, he can barely walk for more than 2 minutes without limping, the pain for him is unbearable and he has quite a noticeable lump on the tendon. He has had this condition now for 2 years and has done a lot of eccentric exercise to try to help. Nothing has helped. We are at a loss of what to do. Doctors have fobbed him off as not being 'high risk' so appointments on the NHS were every 8 - 9 months if even! He is in a lot of pain, he plays rugby as a hobby for the last 25 years, hes had many broken bones (neck, dislocated knee) and he said this pain has to be the most inconvenient and life altering. Is there any other treatment options you know of? Even just for instant pain relieve. We can't get near these options on the NHS without waiting months. Thank you X
Hi Lauren, I can't really comment without assessing your boyfriend and knowing all the details of his specific case but eccentric exercises are not always the right thing to do. It can actually make it feel worse in some cases. It may be worth consulting a good sports physio privately if the waiting times are that long.
I have developed exactly what you are describing. I woke up this morning with the lump and pain. I am not a runner but I exercise on a rowing machine for an hour to an hour and half 5 days a week and have for years. Anyway I took ibuprofen and am elevating the leg. Do you reccommend icing or compression?
Hi Philip, ice may help with the pain. Be careful with compression as that can sometimes make it feel worse. What do you think caused it? I don't think the rowing would be the culprit - did you perhaps wear flat shoes that you're not used to or walk a lot more on hilly terrain? Hope you feel better soon.
What does it mean when I end up with my ankle swollen, red, hot to the touch, burning sensation, weak/completely useless and at times unable to walk, limp, or even put any amount of pressure/weight on my tiptoes without my ankle budging and me needing to grab onto something to not fall down? This happens practically every day or every other day and I was ordered to be on crutches for 2 - 3 weeks and given 800mg of ibuprofen for swelling and pain, and the diagnosis was Achilles tendinitis, they had me lay on my stomach with my ankle of the end of the bed and then he tried touching my ankle and I screamed in pain, after he grabbed and squeezed my calf and showed me that my ankle vaguely moved, and then did the same on my right ankle and I saw my ankle move like normal, they took an x-ray and in the x-ray of my ankle, and it showed a big black lump starting at the heel going upwards towards my calf.. and this was close to 2 years ago now and that was in a regular urgent care as it was close to bedtime and all medical offices were closed for the weekend at that time.. After the ordered time off my ankle it was fine for a few months and then suddenly i noticed every morning I woke up when attempting to take the first steps out of bed, it feels like my ankle is stiff and like my tendon is in the best way I can describe it, it (tendon) feels shorter, and by trying to walk on it, feels like it's pulling on tendon and takes a few steps to be able to walk normal without looking like Frankenstein trying to walk without actually bending my ankle or knee. If I remember correctly the Dr. that treated me, mentioned that I possibly could have micro holes in my tendon if it didn't get better after being off my ankle for 2 - 3 weeks. Also I should mention that while being on crutches a few times I had my crutches get stuck to the tiles in my house and would take a step and ended up putting my left foot down as regular sudden reflex to avoid the fall straight to the face.
I forgot to mention that I am a stay at home mom and it all started when attempting to run to catch up with my 2 daughters when walking them to school in the morning which is a bit less than 1 mile one way and I only ran 1 block about 500 ft and I am not particularly a very big athletic person and have not been running for a while and when I ran that few steps I had a very sharp pain and felt an instant burning sensation but had to continue walking on it to take my girls all the way to school and half a block away from the school I was already walking on my tiptoes with my left ankle and had to take about 6 rest periods on my way back home and it was swollen red and barely any purple but immediately put an ice pack under my ankle while sitting on my bed with my left leg completely extended and a pillow under it as trying to elevate it a bit. Pain did not go away until I was eventually getting carried to the bathroom and would end up crawling back to my room and when everyone was either working or in school would need to be crawling everywhere and when showering would hold onto the sower door and stand on only my right leg.
As I had no one else to walk my girls to school everyday I still had the need to walk on my ankle swollen or not and would get around everywhere with being on my tiptoes and wearing an ankle sleeve as that was at the time my only bit of pain relief when limping on my tiptoes for every necessary activity as well as getting groceries and cooking and cleaning well at least until I was unable to put any bit of pressure and my boyfriend carried me from there on or crawling as I mentioned.
I think that the studies that statement is based on it did not follow people up for long enough. I have had patients come in for a different injury to clinic several years after an Achilles injury and then when we look at the tendon out of curiosity, you can't see anything wrong. So, in my opinion you have to do at least a 3 year follow-up study and include large population to see what truly happens. I think you will find that for some it changed completely, others just some improvement and others the structure remained changed.

I have tendonitis... suffering almost 1 year now.. And i checked uric acid test, it is 7.6.after took medicines much better,but not fully recovered.. Any suggestions madam to recover from this?
Also, if you are a runner and you bought new racing shoes that have an elevated heel, take time to accomodate to that change in dorsaflexion and dont increase pace and mileage first time you wear those shoes. Or else You'll be googling "Achilles tendon pain" like me.
I am not sure if I have this. But about 6 months ago i had a steroid injection in the ankle for calcaneal bursitis ( I thought I had plantar fasciitis which I've had before) as walking was painful esp. first thing. Everything was fine after injection no pain walking but injection started to wear off and then recently 4 weeks ago I suddenly had to run 2 steps to catch a trolley that was rolling downhill I felt as if I sprained my ankle from that point abd after noticed a slight swelling. Anti inflammatoriee didn't help on closer examination it seems the seerling is a bony lump behind my ankle..so it looks like the after effects of a steroid injection gping wrong? Ie it's calcified? Is there anything I can do? Stretches ? Exercises? I was seeing a physio in my area before for weak hip flexor, and long term.lower back ache . however this is a new problem that appears after the steroid injection ( 1st time I had in ankle, though have had in heel of foot before a few years ago with no after effects or problems) Any insight into what I might have or if it can be remedied? I'm none active and overweight and I've got this, I have a down syndrome child and he is a runner as in he runs away, and I have to chase him, and I think I've done this to both my ankles after running after him from a cold start.. my Achilles hurt just walking around the house and going down the stairs 🙈 I'm 47 and feel like I'm 90.
I've met people who have developed this from running for a train or bus, so running after a child can also do it. It can be difficult to stop running, but it may just require a reduction in running to allow your rehab to be effective. Think of it this way - if you take the time now to rehab it, it may just take a few months. Continue to run on it for a year, and it may get to the point where you can't run and it will the likely take a year or longer of rehab to get it back to full strength.
That is called a silent tendinopathy when you have structural changes but no pain. You can still improve your tendon's strength and health through strength training exercises.
Mines got swollen and feel like a brittle rubber band. I stopped doing cardio for a while and it was getting better but today I felt like it got worse. I’m going on like 2 weeks like this. Do you know how long I should wait before I should head to doctors. It’s not too bad right now tho.

I definitely need an Achilles Debridgement surgery? Had Achilles Tendinosis of the right Achilles tendon for the past four years. This has prohibited me from jogging and walking for a long distance. Tried to manage to intense pain in the morning as well pre and post workouts. I have been doing daily pre-work out stretching of my right Achilles tendon, however I continue to have viable thick knot and painful swelling of my right tendon in the mid region. I am going to request a referral with an orthopedic surgeon to go over options for a Retirement procedure (also called Tenex Tenotomy )and Platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) therapy due to the extent chronic nature of a past injury to my tendon. The goal of my requested procedure is to remove the damaged part of my Achilles tendon. Once the unhealthy portion of the tendon has been removed, the remaining tendon is repaired with sutures or stitches to complete the repair. I am thinking about following up with the PRP which my blood will be drawn from my arm and the blood will then be placed in a centrifuge in order to obtain the highest concentration of platelets available and injected in the area of my right Achilles tendon to produce healing factors.
I work 2 jobs both are on the concrete and i use to walk alot but now I can sit for a few minutes and try to walk an it will tighten up were I have to limp for a minute, why is this happening?
It is a typical sign of tendinitis. When you move your circulation is better and the chemicals that are produced by your injured tendon gets taken away quickly. When you sit for a while the chemicals accumulate because of the lack of movement and then it feels very stiff when you start moving. Usually also very stiff first thing in morning.

I got rid of it by elevation above the heart level regularly for 2 weeks & icing it a lot, then after that keeping it wrapped in an ankle compression bandage, & favouring it whenever I walked on it to keep pressure off as much as possible, & after 6 weeks it's better with the swelling almost gone. For several weeks before that I tried stretch & straining exercising to cure it but it wasn't healing at all after a month of them, & I realized that all that this seemed to be doing was preventing the body repairing the damage internally by re-straining the already damaged tissue. Stressing with normal movement - let alone exercise! - damaged ligaments seems a strange way to try to heal them, but there are lots of people advocating that on YT. REST worked for me.

Just had a MRI done to rule out any ruptures as the pain continued even rest for almost two months as advised by the physiotherapist. Thanks for your videos. They allowed me to realize my shoes were not appropriated. Just added a couple of millimeters high to the heel sole, and stronger cushioning that helps me to get a better bounce instead of force the bounce in my tendons. That sole change got my achilles tendons healed in two or three weeks ☺️

I had a tear( not rupture) and the pain went away for a little while and then the lump came and it hurts all the time. Once it’s stretched out it’s not as bad but exercise or running is not possible and have gained weight because of it. I describe it as feeling like a dry rotted rubber band. I limp until it’s warmed up
You really need to consult a physio who can give you a carefully graded strength training programme to get it strong and functional again.
PLEASE do not do what I did. I injured both Achilles 15 years ago, and being a dancer, I just ignored it. Well now I'm 48 years old with 2 messed up Achilles and can barely walk for more than 15 minutes without VERY severe pain. I had to stop dance, the one thing I LOVED because the sports medicine docs believe I'll rupture them. I have years of recovery because I let it go "waiting" for it to just get better. Get it treated now so you're not unable to walk in your 40's
Same…. My heel developed a bump on the bursa sac where the tendons connect. The bump got huge over the past 3yrs. I 1st noticed pain in the tendon area back when I had an 8 hr drive. That weekend my foot hurt bad the entire time on my trip. Now I recently developed a bump on the back of my heel (but more on the inner side of the heel) so now I have bone spur things on both feet. I’m 41 and need to lose like 50lbs . I lost 35lbs since May. I have back pain too. I’m a mess. My feet are so painful 😖 I can’t even massage the injured heels, cuz the pain will make me howl at the moon. I’m aching right now as I’m standing up writing this post .. FML

I abused both Achilles 15 years ago by thinking it would be a fantastic idea to attempt Irish Dance in my 30's. Being a dancer I ignored it, kept dancing (NOT Irish) until I could no longer walk for more than 10 minutes. Seriously, don't wait. Now I have a 2 year recovery and can't do any kind of heavy load on either Achilles because I chose to tough it out

I had the same problem for 3 years. My advice,put it in ice for 30 minutes each night. Change all the inner souls of your footwear to expensive ones,and wear trainers as much as possible. The ice is the most important,every single night without fail,and gentle massage as well. Also try and elevate your foot as much as possible. Eventually this will heal,but it takes time. Be patient
I have the same problem, in my case i have a knee problem (valgum) and poor glute muscle activation, try to find the root of your problem and slowly try fixing it.

I think I injured mine while performing seated calf raises in the gym...Been hurting since early October, cannot push off the front part of the foot...I have stopped doing the calf raises and attempting to rest more, but not having much success...Very small arch or half lump on the achillies, where I am feeling 100% of the discomfort, it is frustrating, cannot walk without a limp now...

Brilliant. I have this - caused by a fortnight of harder manual work than I was used to when building foundations and kneeling, squatting, lifting, deadlifting bags of cement and wet concrete etc just a sudden and prolonged overloading of the Achilles. I then played some cricket which finished me off. My NHS occupational health physio told me that I have to do high loads and no stretching or gentle exercise. Result? - after 3 months I had more pain and a larger lump. I spoke with an old colleague of mine who is a specialised podiatrist and he basically told me all the physiology in this video plus some and set me on the right path. It turns out the technique my physio was telling me was old research aimed at young, elite athletes and now not even practised by the person who developed it in the first place.

Yes, this is what happens in all tendons when you have tendinopathy. However, the type of lump you get in the digitorum longus tendon is usually more a cyst which is something totally different. So you may want to make sure which one you have. I’m not sure what causes a cyst to develop.

You mentioned the blood vessels can move in and out of the tendon depending on how injured it is. I was wondering - where do the blood vessels come from when inserting into the tendon and where do they retreat back to once it's healthy?
The body is constantly changing itself in reaction to what is going on - building different things and breaking them down again when needed. The blood vessels develop as part of the injury process (it may be linked to helping the tendon heal but researchers aren't yet sure) - the body creates them - and as the healing process happens the tendon's structure changes back to normal and the blood vessels disappear.

To answer your question, one has to actually be able to observe what you mean and assess you properly. It might be silent tendinopathy (you get it that it doesn't cause pain) but it is uncommon to have two lumps. So, I think you need to go see your doctor and get it properly checked out to make sure it isn't something more serious.

How painful those things usually are? I'm not sure if I had old left side achilles injury but I started to experience morning stiffness right after I started distance running 23months ago and condition is sometimes better, sometimes worst and I'm having 123day running streak now which I started during Covid19 lockdown.
I have been doing eccentric work, favouring zero drop shoes, stretching and massage at side of tendon and feel those things keeps me going = doing the thing I love to do.
Not sure is it wise but I'm 41yo and would be devastating to stop running.
The pain can vary from just feeling a bit stiff first thing in morning to being really painful to even walk.
I forced my foot into a new boot, injured my tendon while trying that. No actual excercise, but i do have a lump and i could barely step on my injured foot 2 days ago. I run and ride a bike, is it okay to ride the bike while it is healing? I injured the achilles about 4 weeks ago and have been taking it easy, walking, riding and I have done a couple short jogs to test but it still hurt. Last run was about a week ago. I do work construction so I am on my feet all day walking and going up and down ladders. I guess another question I have is will my work strengthen it? FYI I injured it in a rucking race in very hot weather in Houston. I had done many races in the past with no injury.

It is also worth noting that, because your pain only started 4 weeks ago, it may actually reacts well and recover without the need for specific strength training if you manage the load from your other activities well - reason being that tendon injuries that has not dragged on for long usually don't have too much structural change.

Yes absolutely - it is actually quite common in older people and often some of the medications they take can also predispose them to this. My lump is where the tendon attaches to the heel. It is also offset a little to side. I suspect I have a bursitis. A good indication of this (apparently) is pain when standing on tip toes! It's agony.

Hi Dawid, when you're 15 you still have a growth plate where your Achilles tendon attaches. Look up Sever's disease - it is more likely that you have that. I would suggest that you consult a physiotherapist because your exercises have to be set at the right level. Do not do the regular exercises that you see people doing for Achilles tendinopathy - the condition is different and requires a different approach.

It doesn't go away for everyone. Make sure that you keep up with your strength training for several months after all pain has gone away.

I have a lump ( swollen part with some liquid) in my feet , lower to archilles . I have it almost 3 years now . Once i got running or stand for long day , the lump starts to get irritation. Hi Lewis, Yes you can get tendinopathy in that part but it may be good to exclude other causes by getting a doctor to look at it and having a scan as it is not very common to feel a lump when you have tendinopathy in that part.

Played a baseball tournament September 2020 and could barely walk afterwards. 2 years later, I still have a tender lump. It's like having a 3rd testicle, it's fine until there is the slightest bump or pressure along it. I realize now this is going to be here the rest of my life. You're better off breaking all your bones than injuring an achilles.
It can improve if you do the correct rehab - even if it has been there for 2 years.

Strength training is your answer. When you strength train, it stimulates the tendon to form new cells and remodel the old ones, repairing the tendon. As it repairs the tissue becomes more robust and less sensitive and over time you will notice that shoes are no longer an issue. If it's been there for a year or longer, then it will take about 12 to 18 months of being consistent with your strength training to get rid of the lump. What exercises you should start with and how to progress it, will very much depend on your activity goals and your tendon's current capacity.

That sounds like a nerve that is irritated rather than the Achilles. An ortho will be able to diagnose it for you.
This lump came after I fell & twisted my ankle....my ankle was swollen and I couldn’t walk on it for a few days. Soaked it in epsom salt, elevated my leg & stayed off of it, but this painful lump on/or above my Achilles’ tendon remained. I try to do toe lifts on the injured but I simply cannot. Feels like my foot is turning or being pulled outward. Ouch! How do I heal it?

We've had two MRI's and misdiagnosis of old breaks, os trigonum etc. Now, we are sure its achillies tendonitis. His tendon is EXTREMELY tender, he can barely walk for more than 2 minutes without limping, the pain for him is unbearable and he has quite a noticeable lump on the tendon. He has had this condition now for 2 years and has done a lot of eccentric exercise to try to help. Nothing has helped. We are at a loss of what to do.
Doctors have fobbed him off as not being 'high risk' so appointments on the NHS were every 8 - 9 months if even!
He is in a lot of pain, he plays rugby as a hobby for the last 25 years, hes had many broken bones (neck, dislocated knee) and he said this pain has to be the most inconvenient and life altering.
Is there any other treatment options you know of? Even just for instant pain relieve. We can't get near these options on the NHS without waiting months.

Hi Lauren, I can't really comment without assessing your boyfriend and knowing all the details of his specific case but eccentric exercises are not always the right thing to do. It can actually make it feel worse in some cases. It may be worth consulting a good sports physio privately if the waiting times are that long.

I have developed exactly what you are describing. I woke up this morning with the lump and pain. I am not a runner but I exercise on a rowing machine for an hour to an hour and half 5 days a week and have for years. Anyway I took ibuprofen and am elevating the leg. Do you reccommend icing or compression?
Hi Philip, ice may help with the pain. Be careful with compression as that can sometimes make it feel worse. What do you think caused it? I don't think the rowing would be the culprit - did you perhaps wear flat shoes that you're not used to or walk a lot more on hilly terrain? Hope you feel better soon.

What does it mean when I end up with my ankle swollen, red, hot to the touch, burning sensation, weak/completely useless and at times unable to walk, limp, or even put any amount of pressure/weight on my tiptoes without my ankle budging and me needing to grab onto something to not fall down? This happens practically every day or every other day and I was ordered to be on crutches for 2 - 3 weeks and given 800mg of ibuprofen for swelling and pain, and the diagnosis was Achilles tendinitis, they had me lay on my stomach with my ankle of the end of the bed and then he tried touching my ankle and I screamed in pain, after he grabbed and squeezed my calf and showed me that my ankle vaguely moved, and then did the same on my right ankle and I saw my ankle move like normal, they took an x-ray and in the x-ray of my ankle, and it showed a big black lump starting at the heel going upwards towards my calf.. and this was close to 2 years ago now and that was in a regular urgent care as it was close to bedtime and all medical offices were closed for the weekend at that time.. After the ordered time off my ankle it was fine for a few months and then suddenly i noticed every morning I woke up when attempting to take the first steps out of bed, it feels like my ankle is stiff and like my tendon is in the best way I can describe it, it (tendon) feels shorter, and by trying to walk on it, feels like it's pulling on tendon and takes a few steps to be able to walk normal without looking like Frankenstein trying to walk without actually bending my ankle or knee. If I remember correctly the Dr. that treated me, mentioned that I possibly could have micro holes in my tendon if it didn't get better after being off my ankle for 2 - 3 weeks. Also I should mention that while being on crutches a few times I had my crutches get stuck to the tiles in my house and would take a step and ended up putting my left foot down as regular sudden reflex to avoid the fall straight to the face.
I forgot to mention that I am a stay at home mom and it all started when attempting to run to catch up with my 2 daughters when walking them to school in the morning which is a bit less than 1 mile one way and I only ran 1 block about 500 ft and I am not particularly a very big athletic person and have not been running for a while and when I ran that few steps I had a very sharp pain and felt an instant burning sensation but had to continue walking on it to take my girls all the way to school and half a block away from the school I was already walking on my tiptoes with my left ankle and had to take about 6 rest periods on my way back home and it was swollen red and barely any purple but immediately put an ice pack under my ankle while sitting on my bed with my left leg completely extended and a pillow under it as trying to elevate it a bit. Pain did not go away until I was eventually getting carried to the bathroom and would end up crawling back to my room and when everyone was either working or in school would need to be crawling everywhere and when showering would hold onto the sower door and stand on only my right leg.
As I had no one else to walk my girls to school everyday I still had the need to walk on my ankle swollen or not and would get around everywhere with being on my tiptoes and wearing an ankle sleeve as that was at the time my only bit of pain relief when limping on my tiptoes for every necessary activity as well as getting groceries and cooking and cleaning well at least until I was unable to put any bit of pressure and my boyfriend carried me from there on or crawling as I mentioned.
So I’ve been injured for 7 months now and when I make my foot go down I feel a lump on my foot and it hurts a lot what can I do?
Jill Cook says you can't change the structure of degenerated tendons, what do you think of that statement?
I think that the studies that statement is based on it did not follow people up for long enough. I have had patients come in for a different injury to clinic several years after an Achilles injury and then when we look at the tendon out of curiosity, you can't see anything wrong. So, in my opinion you have to do at least a 3 year follow-up study and include large population to see what truly happens. I think you will find that for some it changed completely, others just some improvement and others the structure remained changed.

What about when I stretch my Achilles they crack like knuckles how do I stop this? I think that’s how I ended up with a ruptured Achilles’ tendon but I’ve had surgery I’m healed now it’s time to rehab. But the cracking can’t be healthy right?, is this lactic acid? Or nahhhh?

Hi After seeing your video i fell i too have Achilles tendon on left ankle. I have consulted orthopaedic where i reside. The doctor after going to my xray says that it ankle spur. He prescribed two types of medication T Heal. Its almost 6 months my pain has not stopped. And the lump still persist. Any remedy you can suggest. Is there any exercise? Can i do stretching?

I have tendonitis... suffering almost 1 year now.. And i checked uric acid test, it is 7.6.after took medicines much better,but not fully recovered.. Any suggestions madam to recover from this?

Also, if you are a runner and you bought new racing shoes that have an elevated heel, take time to accomodate to that change in dorsaflexion and dont increase pace and mileage first time you wear those shoes. Or else You'll be googling "Achilles tendon pain" like me.
I am not sure if I have this. But about 6 months ago i had a steroid injection in the ankle for calcaneal bursitis ( I thought I had plantar fasciitis which I've had before) as walking was painful esp. first thing. Everything was fine after injection no pain walking but injection started to wear off and then recently 4 weeks ago I suddenly had to run 2 steps to catch a trolley that was rolling downhill I felt as if I sprained my ankle from that point abd after noticed a slight swelling. Anti inflammatoriee didn't help on closer examination it seems the seerling is a bony lump behind my ankle..so it looks like the after effects of a steroid injection gping wrong? Ie it's calcified? Is there anything I can do? Stretches ? Exercises? I was seeing a physio in my area before for weak hip flexor, and long term.lower back ache . however this is a new problem that appears after the steroid injection ( 1st time I had in ankle, though have had in heel of foot before a few years ago with no after effects or problems)

I'm none active and overweight and I've got this, I have a down syndrome child and he is a runner as in he runs away, and I have to chase him, and I think I've done this to both my ankles after running after him from a cold start.. my Achilles hurt just walking around the house and going down the stairs 🙈 I'm 47 and feel like I'm 90.
I've met people who have developed this from running for a train or bus, so running after a child can also do it. It can be difficult to stop running, but it may just require a reduction in running to allow your rehab to be effective. Think of it this way - if you take the time now to rehab it, it may just take a few months. Continue to run on it for a year, and it may get to the point where you can't run and it will the likely take a year or longer of rehab to get it back to full strength.
I've got huge lumps, and I've had them for thirty years, just on one leg. Not painful, but the tendon obviously isn't healthy.
That is called a silent tendinopathy when you have structural changes but no pain. You can still improve your tendon's strength and health through strength training exercises.
Mines got swollen and feel like a brittle rubber band. I stopped doing cardio for a while and it was getting better but today I felt like it got worse. I’m going on like 2 weeks like this. Do you know how long I should wait before I should head to doctors. It’s not too bad right now tho.

Had Achilles Tendinosis of the right Achilles tendon for the past four years. This has prohibited me from jogging and walking for a long distance.
Tried to manage to intense pain in the morning as well pre and post workouts. I have been doing daily pre-work out stretching of my right Achilles tendon, however I continue to have viable thick knot and painful swelling of my right tendon in the mid region.
I am going to request a referral with an orthopedic surgeon to go over options for a Retirement procedure (also called Tenex Tenotomy )and Platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) therapy due to the extent chronic nature of a past injury to my tendon.
The goal of my requested procedure is to remove the damaged part of my Achilles tendon. Once the unhealthy portion of the tendon has been removed, the remaining tendon is repaired with sutures or stitches to complete the repair.
I am thinking about following up with the PRP which my blood will be drawn from my arm and the blood will then be placed in a centrifuge in order to obtain the highest concentration of platelets available and injected in the area of my right Achilles tendon to produce healing factors.
I work 2 jobs both are on the concrete and i use to walk alot but now I can sit for a few minutes and try to walk an it will tighten up were I have to limp for a minute, why is this happening?
It is a typical sign of tendinitis. When you move your circulation is better and the chemicals that are produced by your injured tendon gets taken away quickly. When you sit for a while the chemicals accumulate because of the lack of movement and then it feels very stiff when you start moving. Usually also very stiff first thing in morning.

I cured mine by elevation, wearing a compression bandage & resting it for 3 weeks.
@@Horizon344 I have one on the right ankle, near the ankle bone. It hurts when I land on uneven surfaces such as a small twig or tiny pebbles. I cannot jump and land on the ground without causing pain.
@@littlehomeforest5972 Sorry to hear it pal, mine was painful also, particularly when using stairs. I got rid of it by elevation above the heart level regularly for 2 weeks & icing it a lot, then after that keeping it wrapped in an ankle compression bandage, & favouring it whenever I walked on it to keep pressure off as much as possible, & after 6 weeks it's better with the swelling almost gone. For several weeks before that I tried stretch & straining exercising to cure it but it wasn't healing at all after a month of them, & I realized that all that this seemed to be doing was preventing the body repairing the damage internally by re-straining the already damaged tissue. Stressing with normal movement - let alone exercise! - damaged ligaments seems a strange way to try to heal them, but there are lots of people advocating that on YT. REST worked for me.
I've got this lump, and yes it's very painful when I push it, but I struggle with pain all way in my foot, and find it hard some times to walk, and even walking is even painful, resting my ankle or while sleeping I woke up and the pain is to much
