Remembrance Day at Sacred Heart

  • "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."
    These are the words, spoken by US President Theodore Roosevelt, that were quoted by Father Giordano at Sacred Heart's Remembrance Day Mass on November 4, as he urged students, faculty and staff to honour the sacrifices made by others on our behalf, for peace.
    We were honoured to have with us the following members of the Armed Forces: Lieutenant-Colonel (retired) Colin Robinson, Captain (retired) Georges Gohier, Chief Petty Officer Nicolas Jequier, Petty Officer 1st class (Retired) Karin-Ann Goral, Sergeant Salvatore Miranda, and Corporal Taylor Teodori (SHSM Class of 2010).
    We were also blessed with the participation of Dr. Paul Kavanagh, founder of Operation Veteran. Sacred Heart has been supporting this charity since its inception in 2009, providing meals for veterans at the Canadian War Museum.
    The bagpipes were played by Jeff McCarthy, and the lone trumpet was played by Gurleen Padda, Class of 2016.
