- I've got a story, you guys!!! I wanted to share my worst experience in England - and boy, what a story it is!
Thankfully I have a lovely landlord now, but it's not always been good. As a Canadian living in the UK, there's a lot of letting law and regulations that I wasn't aware of... but I'm more knowledgeable now!
I hope these tips and experiences can help others so you can avoid what I went through!

Alanna - you and your partner should have done the following 6 things:
1) Inform the letting agent of ALL these problems straight away as one happened. That's what letting agents are there for.
2) Informed the local council of all these issues.
3) Employed a solicitor to write letters to the landlord *from the outset of these problems* to advise him of his legal responsibilities and your legal rights.
4) Found another place to live PDQ
5) If needs be put the whole matter in the hands of your solicitor.
6) If you can't afford a solicitor, go to the CAB (Citizens' Advice Bureau).
In the case of the dodgy wiring in the property, this could easily have proved fatal.
I believe I am correct in saying that not only does the *landlord* have a legal obligation to supply a current Gas Certificate, but the *Letting Agents ALSO* have that legal obligation - unless there is no gas supply to the property, that is.
The behaviour of the landlord was unacceptable and you should have informed the police. In fact, coming into the property without prior notice is illegal.
Rogue landlords like this need to be shut down in order that future tenants do not have to suffer what you guys suffered. He was in contravention of the law on each and every one of these incidents.
This guy earns money by letting out his property. Where a landlord uses a letting agent, the landlord should NEVER suggest that you go to them first if there are problems. This in and of itself shows a complete lack of professionalism on his part and should set alarm bells ringing.
In essence, this man should be spending time behind bars at Her Majesty's pleasure.
Sadly, as the tragic and entirely preventable fire at Grenfell Tower demonstrates, many landlords cannot be trusted, and the laws which regulate the letting of properties are often not enforced.
It's tricky though.
The renter experience is normally...
1) The letting agent will completely ignore you. You can never speak to the same person twice. They side with the landlord and generally gaslight you for making any complaint, while also being just generally useless at their own administration to the point you can't bare to talk to them anymore.
2) The local council... same as the letting agent but with more admin and less staff. Possibly no humans to speak to.
3) Employing a soliciter - Generally the only good option but only possible if you have the money. In most cases you decide it's not worth the cost or hassel and you just survive and get out of the contract as soon as you can.
4) Leaving as soon as possible is the realistic option. You just accept your fate and that you have to pay a fotune to live in a crap flat until your contract runs out. AND to top it all off you need to also accept that you will lose your entire deposit because the landlord will blame you for all the problems.
Add on top of that, the landlords tend to be wealthier than you, have access to a lawyer, understand the system better than you and have leverage over you because they own your only shelter. And when you try to find somewhere else to live, the landlord can make your reference a pain unless you play nice with them.
The entire rental system protects the interests of landlords, and even when you want to excersise your rights as a tennant, it's costly, difficult and generally more stress and time than it's worth. So bad landlords thrive.
You've outlined good points there. Ive noted a few I would have done sometimes back.
A good tip is to take photographs of everything on the day you move it. Especially worn or 'iffy' areas such as doubtful wiring, carpeting, broken window frames or cracked sinks or toilet bowls things that may need renewed that they may try to blame you for. Then you have comeback.
my landlord is lovely, her husband died a few months ago, we cook food for each other, I was a chef for 3 decades, she can cook. It's so nice to have a meal prepared for you after a long day at work in hospital theatres! Typically 10 hours on my feet"

As an owner of rental properties I cannot imagine behaving the way this landlord has done. The rental agency has also behaved in an unscrupulous manner as well. So glad you are not under those organizations now. Lesson: Deal only with the leasing agency for communications and copy the landlord.
Hi pal you’re still bad
For a short while I worked for a property letting company, and I've seen all this first-hand -repairs that never get done, sub-standard and potentially lethal electrical and gas installations, foisting responsibility and costs onto the tenants, hanging onto deposits -I was really glad to get away from it as I couldn't stand working for a crook. I thoroughly endorse your advice to get everything documented and photographed, and never, ever, move into a property where the landlord promises to fix faults once you've moved in. I'm glad you're now in a better place both physically and mentally.
Letting companies are the absolute dregs they con owners and tenants in every way they can.

Wow - the situation you described with the dishwasher was extremely dangerous. So so bad, that should never ever have happened. Whoever wired that up should be prosecuted.
It’s a real shame that you got a bad landlord, my daughter had a similar experience at her first year at University, we had to travel 150 miles to get it sorted out. He had the habit of just turning up at any time and several times turned up where the girls were taking a shower! Fortunately it was near to the end of their stay, but the Police and the University were informed about the situation. His properties were not included in the recommended properties for students in their second year. We have heard worse but not going to go into that, these people who behave like this are scumbags that don’t deserve customers!

It's good to hear that you were able to get rid of the angry landlord and his property alongside its issues.
Regarding electrical shocks, the landlord should provide reports of the recent checks done on the property. This includes the Electrical Installation Condition Report, Gas Safety Report, and Energy Performance Certificate.
Holy crap! That landlord sounds like a psychopath. I'm glad you got out of there in one piece! I've had a landlord like that before in the US and just like in your case, the only thing that forced them to stop behaving like that was getting a lawyer who threatened to claw back rent.

Sounds to me as if either the landlord or a “friend” did the electrics rather than a proper tradesman . A right cowboy. Glad you have moved somewhere better.
That's the first thing that crossed my mind.
If I were you I'd take the landlord and the letting agency to court for the stress you went through. Makes me feel like giving you guys a big hug.

Most modern external doors have Euro cylinder locks, can be purchased for under £10 and changed in 2 minutes with just a screwdriver.
Wow, you had a really bad landlord there. To hell with his ex-military background, he was well out of order on many levels.
Talking through the situation with others is cathartic, relieving the stress. You went through a lot but you've come through it wiser & more prepared if you ever get into that situation again.
Keeping notes, taking pics & everything written down (email is great as everyone has a copy of who said what to whom & when) is great advice.

I'm glad you got out of there. I've been pretty lucky when renting and my landlords were generally OK. When I bought a flat though, I had to deal with a housing agency who "ran" the housing estate I lived in and wow, the way people can put money ahead of people's basic need for a home is astonishing

This guy sounds somewhat similar to one of my sister and her partner's landlords. Would often let himself in, demand more rent etc. On the day they finally got out he was literally throwing open and emptying kitchen drawers on to the floor. How bloody awfully stressful this must have been for you both. I hope your current place has much more hospitable landlord/landlady

As a private renter of about 15 years and 2 different properties I have only had good experiences so far. I have heard the horror stories of course but I have been lucky it seems. What a horrible experience you both have had and I am so happy that you can start to put it behind you now. Also, what a professional you were during all of this. I remember you hinting at things but you hid it so well. Your partner is awesome by the sound of it too. Onwards and upwards.

Always had someone sent around the next day for a leak in the roof; a broken fridge/freezer; boiler not working etc, etc. I have never known what the landlord /landlady looks like. Always got my deposit back.
But, I have heard horror stories. Unlucky.

I remember how when you were moving you said there was a story to tell, and that you would get to it eventually. This sounds like a living nightmare. Kudos to you and your partner, and thank you for continuing to produce lovely content even though you were horribly stressed out and fearful. I can see why you were test tasting the beers now lol. Goodness Alanna, my heart goes out to you. I agree totally that you should always deal with the agent where possible, and that it’s worth the modest cost of a solicitor (lawyer) to advise you. That said, some agents exploit the tenants’ lack of experience and I’ve seen some appalling examples of that. Thank goodness you have a nice new home now.

The first huge red flag, which you should have heeded, was when he informed you to go to him instead of the letting agency for any problems. Hopefully, a life lesson learned.
There is pretty much no difference between letting agency scum and private landlord scum. They are all leeching like bloodsuckers from the most rent they can take.
Why is this lunatic ex Landlord shouting at your partner for somebody else tripping on the steps. How is your partner to blame for someone else's mistake??
That sounds horrendous. I can honestly say, in thirty years of renting, I've never had an experience that bad. For most of that time, I've lived in the North of England. I spent a year in the South, and found it more complicated to rent than in the North, where most of the landlords were small-with no more than a handful of properties-and no letting agency. Also, housing associations are usually better than private landlords, for those with a low income (ie., me).
I don't see the private renting situation improving any time soon because many politicians are private landlords, and they will go to any lengths to protect their income and power. 😒

Having watched the video of your dreadful experience as a tenant, I realise I'm so lucky with the arrangement I have. I have rented for many years from an establishment literally right across the road from my house. They always write or email if anything needs to be done to the property, like service the heating boiler, checking the electrical system etc. On the few occasions I have ever needed anything sorted out, then after an email or phonecall it has been rectified as soon as possible. I've never had any representative of the landlord come to do an inspection. So happy for you that you're now able to live peacefully.

Even now, having left the Rachmannesque experience you experienced with your former, seemingly psychopathic landlord, I recommend you send this video to the Better Business Bureau at your former town. This way you will be helping to protect other, maybe somewhat naïve renters from having a similar, dreadful experience. Both the unethical behaviour of the letting agency and the threatening and fundamentally criminally dangerous actions (and inactions) of your landlord should be investigated by both the Bureau and the local council's landlord & tenent regulator. Thx for sharing.

Your partner must have the patience of a saint. I don't think I'd have held my temper if that landord got in my face, especially if I was just trying to give him a heads up.

Hi Alanna, that took courage, I was in a similar situation in the early 80's and I blamed myself for pretty much everything, the fear is very real, you doubt yourself and all decisions that you make and have made, it was something that really made me ill and still does to this day, you clearly have a good partner and I know that you will draw strength from one another, bless you both and you both take care always :)
I'm sure you could have got the landlord on the lack of electrical inspection (EICR) too. That's definitely a no no!
I've heard stories of people who have been mistreated by landlords who don't follow all the rules getting YEARS of rent back! Especially when it comes to the desposit scheme.
Alanna, I've been watching your videos off and on for 4 years now and they have always unfailingly been hilarious, light hearted, insightful and wonderfully entertaining. To hear that you were both dealing with all this during these times is truly amazing and a great testament to how hard you have worked for your fans as well as your bravery. I'm a landlord. I make sure all checks and repairs are done.
On the other side of the coin, I'm currently having to go through the courts to evict a tenant who will not leave. It's been 9 months. Nightmare.
Holy cow I am a subscriber and I never for one moment thought that you and your partner were going through such absolute hell with your living conditions! You could of been killed 😱. Your previous landlord sounds horrific very very frightening.its crystal clear to me why he kept saying that he was in the army.it was totally to intimidate no ifs or buts about that.he should never ever be allowed to rent homes again.i personally feel he is dangerous! I’m really sorry that you went through such a terrible time, I am very glad that you were not alone and that you were both intelligent enough to be able to fight for your rights and I wish I could have been there when someone had to tell him you were threatening him with legal action. I genuinely respect and am thankful for the people who serve our country in the military but have never come across anyone who used it to bully others. I find it hard to believe that a bully would be popular in any branch of the military. Thank you for sharing your experience as it may spare someone else from suffering as you did. Y'all are just too nice and tolerant. Property renters need to empower themselves with knowledge of the law and best practices for their own protection because there are a lot of unscrupulous landlords out there whose only motivation is to have someone else foot the bill for their ownership and perhaps pocket a few extra quid.
It seems you are in a better situation now and I'm glad you've learned some valuable lessons from an untenable experience. (see what I did there?!)

I sympathise Alanna! I had no hot water for 6 months during the pandemic - cold baths only, but thankfully in spring/summer!

You had a rough time there! I'm glad you seem to be having a better time at your current flat. You give good advice for anyone new to renting. When my sister moved away to study and rented several properties, she unfortunately had bad experiences with the majority of them. I feel thankful I've never had to rent and deal with landlords and letting agents.

You are lucky to be alive! We lost a family member getting an electric shock from a dishwasher badly connected to the electric supply. What a horrible experience you had, I can imagine the stress you went through, I glad you are happy and safe now.
Sorry this sound so scary, glad you are now away from them. Landlords like this are so scary there needs to be a register so you can see how good they are before hand.

Yes, there are so many background checks required for people who rent, but not for landlords!!
I agree with a register for landlords in a similar vein to TripAdvisor that would sort the wheat from the chaf from a long standing landlord.
Oh my goodness, Alanna❤❤❤ What a horrible learning experience!!! You paid an awful price in fear, injury and diiscomfort in your own home but you're clearly much, much wiser and more capable now.. And you didn't just slink away and sweep all this difficuty and trauma under the carpet. So good for you, if anyone tries to take advantage of you from now on, you're a warrior more than fot for battle!!! I'm so glad you weren't killed by the dishwasher or by a fall on the insecurely lined steps. Or by that menacing creep of a landlord!! What an ordeal. All your viewers will benefit from the lessons learned in this epiisode. I'm sure have helped many others today.

I have had my share of ‘adventures and naps’ during my near 76 years and having lost my first wife to cancer after 30 years and my second to Alzheimer's after 25yrs; loneliness can be at times something hard to bear. Yet every time I share your experiences I forget my problems and feel comforted and entertained.

Well done Alanna, you weathered the storm. Property landlords are very often spivs without conscience but you stood your ground well in this case because you knew your rights and/or you received good advice.
Wow Alanna, I'm so sorry for you and your partner having had to go through such an awful situation! What the heck with that psycho!!! The good thing is they did think they could take your deposit money but actually they couldn't, you outsmarted them! Good job! Hi Alanna, so sorry that I haven't visited your channel for awhile and after viewing this video, I feel somewhat guilty. That flat sounds like it was jinxed!!! Wow!! All those things going wrong. You were very fortunate that were okay after receiving that electric shock. My dad told me years ago that he accidentally toughed a faulty electrical item and the shock threw him right across the room. Love the way how you have split the video into three parts, we even experienced commercial breaks here, between the parts. With all the things you went through, I think if that was to be made as a motion picture, it would go really well at the box office. The scariest thing was that it is all real life and it is so good to know that you both got through it all okay. Wishing you the very best. Robert.

I've had a few issues with Landlords in the past but not on this level. Glad it's all sorted now and you can move on with your lives.

On the plus side, now you’re clear of that situation, you can be thrilled that you survived and learned from, an encounter with the legendary Arfur Daley ( tv show ‘Minder’) Also, using the famous “Dong dong” from ‘Law and Order’ was an inspired choice! Wow, that was an unpleasant ride. From things I've heard over the years, a person could have a TH-cam channel devoted to bad landlords. Some don't have a clue about tenants rights and what they can and can't do.
I rent from a housing association and they couldn't be nicer, due to my age, they contacted me every so often during the worst of the pandemic to check if I was having any problems.

I am a landlord and could have a yt channel on nightmare tenants it works both ways. There are scum landlords, scum agents and scum tenants just saying.
A truly awful ordeal to have to live through, can't imagine the underlying stress it caused. So pleased for you finding a new home. Did you get to take the Ring doorbell with you?

I'm so sorry to hear of your experiences! But you can absolutely put a positive spin on it and realise that you have learned a great deal, and in future you will be much better prepared to deal with situations if they arise. I don't think you should be thanking the landlord (obviously) but you can definitely be grateful to have come out the other side as a much stronger and more capable person! Allana, I'm so sorry that this happened to you & your partner. I remember how stressed you were during your move & no wonder! These are hard lessons that kind & decent people unfortunately learn. I am proud of the way you handled it & that you eventually found your voice. I applaud you for using your platform to warn us about the predators out there & how to handle them. These evil people are why the world is in the bleak state that it is. The rest of us have to wake up & stop them!
I'm so sorry you and you're boyfriend have suffered this appalling behaviour. I've no idea why anyone one would want to cause you so much upset. You don't come across as ever wanting to cause anyone any trouble and I take you at your word that your partner is just as lovely. I hope sharing this has helped you process at least and you have a lot of happy days in your new home :)

Oh dear, Alanna. That's a cautionary tale and a half!
The moment you divulged that the landlord was ex-military, I knew the type - quite possibly abused, and now sadly taking out that abuse on innocents including the two of you. Thank goodness that all was resolved - the wrong will fail, the right prevail! I realise that although that dreadful experience is now comfortably in the rear view mirror, the impact on you is likely to last. At least you now have the benefit of hindsight!
Just remember: you have 125,000+ of us on your side! Hopefully nothing like this will ever happen to you again, and in opening up to us about it, perhaps you may save others from going through it.

@@MS-19 - you're assumption that a person is abusive because they have been abused themselves is misinformed. An awful lot of abusers are predatory and lack empathy and have no moral compass, they haven't been abused at all. Most people who have been abused do not go on to abuse anyone at all, ever. The self serving excuses abusers make all the time is nothing more than cod psychology. And the importance about reporting the abuse to the police and other regulatory authorities is that it protects any future possible renters from becoming victims. I'm interested to hear why you are so forgiving of this abuser and making such offensive excuses for him that condemns abused people everywhere as abusers.
@@mushypeasplease8872 It is indeed a sweeping generalisation on my part, but most of those I have seen convicted of abuse during my own lifetime have suffered abuse at the hands of key figures during their formative years. As you say, there are plenty of other abusers that have nothing of the kind in their history. Nature accounts for some; Nurture accounts for others.
I am not seeking to absolve abusers of their crimes. Nor is forgiveness mine to offer; only those they have wronged could do that, and it is entirely up to them whether or not to do so. You are in error to infer or ascribe such desires to me.

Sorry to hear about your experience with the landlord from hell. I have had a few issues with renting, so am aware that the Rental Agencies often regards the tenant’s needs as the least important!
Sounds like an awfully stressful time. And as you say, you learned from the experience. That which does not destroy you makes you stronger.
"Connected to the mains" is British for basically, "plugged in".
The "mains" is the main electricity. An appliance can be plugged in like you would plug in a hair dryer or a lamp, or it can be "hard wired" into the mains, meaning the wirers are tied into the wiring of the house.
From what the electrician was saying I would say the latter was the case, that it was wired directly to the mains. Useful that you do not have to pay for the electricity it uses, but the down side is that it is illegal and you can get arrested.
@@1949corekWhay makes you think they wouldn't pay for the electricity? Electric ovens are often hardwired into the mains (no intervening plug and socket) but the tenant still pays for the electricity.
I think it means it wasn’t on its own circuit. Kitchen appliances use a lot of power and in the UK the voltage of the supply is quite high. So to avoid the risk of shock, large appliances should either have their own circuit individually or sometimes be jointly on a smaller circuit separate from the circuit/s for the rest of the house ( the mains circuit). This means they can have their own circuit breaker to cut in if needed and avoid the risk of electric shock.
Never. Ever. Ever, deal with the landlord directly if you have rented via a letting agency.
Edit 1: And, if possible, only use email with the letting agent.
Edit 2: And, really, really, do not interact with your landlord's sub-contracters.

As a landlord of two properties I have never met, or spoken to, the tenants of either property, everything is done via the letting agents.

Currently interviewing for universities in the UK, and I'm from the USA. This has helped so much! I rented for about 8 years before I bought my own home in the states. I'll be selling my home, and I'll start renting again. This really helped me start thinking how it really is to rent and what to watch out for when I move. I love your videos. Side note, do you have any videos showing how to use the buses and trains??? I've used public transportation in Mexico when I lived there a few times, but I'm sure it so much different. We don't have any public transportation where I live in the state. :(
