Kitch-iti-kipi is the largest natural freshwater spring located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, about six miles northwest of Manistique. Early Native Americans named it the “Mirror of Heaven.” It’s also said the name Kitch-iti-kipi comes from an old Native American legend about a young chieftain who set sail in his canoe across the spring as a test of his devotion to his girlfriend. However, his canoe tipped and he perished in the icy waters.
The spring is 45 feet deep and the water flows at ten thousand gallons a minute. The temperature is a constant 45 degrees year-round. Visitors will spot lake trout, yellow perch, walleye and other species in the crystal-clear water from time to time. The fish move freely between the Big Spring and Indian Lake.
This spot is a must-see destination attracting 70,000 plus people every summer. The water never freezes so go during the off-season if you don’t want to worry about the crowd. There’s a raft at the dock, which visitors are encouraged to use to get a better view of everything beneath the water. If you visit, you might notice an odor near the spring. Don’t worry, that’s normal. It’s a result of the water’s high sulfuric content - the color of the water is green because of this. Local well drillers avoid tapping the water due to this reason.
    History:
In the 1920s, John Bellaire discovered the spring after coming across an area covered in fallen trees from loggers using the site as a dump. Seeing the area as a potential spot for public recreation, Bellaire convinced Frank Palms of the Palms Book Land Company to sell the 90 acres of land and spring for $10 to the state of Michigan in 1926. The deed to the land requires the area to be forever used as a public park, bearing the name Palms Book State Park.
Fun Fact: Back in the day before GPS and navigation became the norm, tourists were told to follow telephone poles that had rings on them to find the site instead of highway signs. Locals would simply say “follow the rings to the Big Spring.”
