- San Jose Taiko had the honor of having Yoko Fujimoto of Kodo sing Ei Ja Nai Ka for our performances during the 2015 San Jose Obon festival.
Ei Ja Nai Ka has special meaning to San Jose Taiko, having been written by our Artistic Director Emeritus, PJ Hirabayashi, and is a community building song in San Jose, across California and around the globe. We frequently perform Ei Ja Nai Ka during our performances for San Jose Obon as well as perform it during the Bon Odori (Obon dancing) but this year was a special treat for us. Yoko Fujimoto of Kodo has been a long time friend and collaborator with PJ and actually wrote the lyrics to Ei Ja Nai Ka for an earlier collaboration involving the two of them. When we learned she would be in San Jose during our Obon, we knew we had to have her sing...the results speak for themselves...

The phrase's meaning is both defiant and fatalistic, and it translates as "Who cares?", "Why not?", or "What the hell?", along the lines of "'Who cares if we take our clothes off?"
