- Amanda Gorman read her poem 'Fury and Faith' for a perfomance on equality, social justice and love called "Brotherhood/Sisterhood" at the Bach Virtuosi Festival's Virtual Virtuosi on August 16, 2020. This is the full version of her poem.
Amanda Gorman, a graduate of Harvard University, was the Inaugural Youth Poet Laureate of the United States. You can read more about her at her website: www.theamandago.... Amanda was also the 2021 National Youth Poet Laureate for the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
Amanda responded to the hopelessness of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protest to write Fury and Faith. She wrote these encouraging words to lead us to instill courage in our hearts: “…whether we prevail in these times is not determined by all the challenges present but by the change that is possible…”

Words have power and I have recently seen them wielded as a club to keep people down. This beautiful young black woman who has a great and gracious manner will not be struck down by that club, no matter how they will try. Her lovely rhythmic gymnastics will fly like an irrepressible bright balloon, bobbing in the brilliant sunlight and untouched by those brutes who would rob us of her words. Her voice, like that balloon is rising and floating and flying and she is bringing us with her into the bright blue sky. We owe her a tremendous debt for inspiring our desire to fly again.

We rise our seeds that are planted grow into voices the youth of today are old souls with old/ new wisdom strong trunks with sturdy branches with leaves that blow off with the wind into the world and they speak..I'm 68yrs old and I bow to her because her light has voice her leaves give off voice along with the sweet smell

Anyone else ever feel like they love and appreciate and trust and care so deeply for a person you hardly know, to the point that it makes you cry? That's how this incredible woman makes me feel. I have so much admiration and awe for Amanda, and I just want her to be respected and appreciated and successful and have all the very best things in life, because she deserves it. I am an American living in Europe but when COVID is over and I fly to the USA I am going to find this young woman. My my... her intelligence, beauty and mind has floored me. I wish her nothing but the best. It would be a privilege and an honor to stand near her, to walk around her... her mother must be the happiest mom on Earth. Her neighbors should strewn white petals on her door.

If you have not seen Amanda’s other work in the Brotherhood/Sisterhood program, it is the writings of Toni Morrison. It’s early on in the work. Highly recommend it, as I do Richard Blanco’s work. This is the same piece that he read in 2013 at Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s inauguration. Well worth watching!
Amanda Gorman would greatly be loved by James Baldwin, Alan Ginsberg, some Dutch Poets too!

As I pass two dozen listens to her inaugural poem, and search out more videos of her work after ordering her two books due out later, I think she is just perfect. But, I think she will be more perfect in the future.

Amanda reminds me of myself growing up and speaking . At 12years old, i began speaking. I gave the address speech for the first all black Junior High School in Aldine ISD, Houston, Texas. For many years people everywhere wanted to meet me
I am proud to see this talent coming to light again. I am glad someone discovered you. Today many people refer to me as the best kept secret in Aldine USD. Some day I wish our paths can cross, so i can share my story with you. Keep being that light that can inspire and help our black children dream again. As you spoke I cried during the ceremony for President Biden. I am 72 years old now but i still remember being 12years old standing tall. God Bless you . My desire is to open a speaking academy for our black children some set

Amanda Gorman is certainly an impressive appearance and she makes serious points. But, from a purely poetic point of performance, for me her poetry would be more gripping if her delivery was less rehearsed, slower and more intense to give her listeners more time to absorb what she says...
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. She does have her own style that resonates with some and not as much with others.
There is something the be said for her pacing and cadence. It gives that 'spoken word' feel that is so hip hop ... it is 'spitting' or 'toasting'. Where the drums ... are in the rythm of the voice.
@@sandibuck4549 completely agree. Her use of words reflect a rhythm that can speak to so much more than poetry. When I listen to her, I hear Common, Lin-Manuel, and crossover artists who have gone on to change the world.

Curiously, when talking about political poetry, I find Martin Luther Kings political "I have a dream" speech more poetic/lyrical than Gormans staccato agitprop "poetry" full of fashionable political buzwords...
Honestly, i dont see, where 's a poem here? Which part of 2 min 49 s is a poem? No rhyme, no rhythm., no idea. Just random words stating one thought, that could be said in one sentence. The girl is very beautiful. I'm glad she got education and achived smth, but i don't see a poet here, an artist. Sure, I'm not a critic, I just read a lot, poetry as well. And that surely is not poetry.

1) we did not refer to this work as a poem
2) beauty is in the eye of the beholder
