  • Although open vase training has reigned for decades as the predominant tree architecture system for eastern peach orchards, the results of recent Penn State research show a change in our peach orchard training systems is long overdue. The Quad V and Hex V are productive and easy-to-train fruiting wall systems that facilitate mechanization for precision management and labor efficiency.

I watched a PBS show about how plants communicate. According to the PBS show a mother plant will share nutrients with her seedlings through the root system. If another type of invading plant gets in the way, the other plants will use their ability to grow roots to stifle growth of an invading plant. IN other words, keep your peach tree's roots as far away from other trees as possible or their roots might get choked out.

It looks like the main focus of the pruning is to make a much shorter path for water and nutrients to get to the plant and fruit. Prune off as much old growth , keep the branches off the scaffold short and a year old. Basically establish an improved and shorter delivery system for water and minerals to produce better fruit.

I don't see how the quad or hex are any different from a vase open center, other than being more specific in spacing.

They don't have the bench cuts that hold back production by 1-3 years. They allow the tree to grow upward, which is its natural tendency. So you get earlier fruit and can plant more densely, with the tradeoff being that fruiting surface moves up beyond pedestrian reach.

@@bradbauerly5952 you could reduce the height to 7 ft or 8ft to make it a pedestrian friendly tree.
