Im surprised Wife Swap isnt on here. With the show being blasted for purposefully pushing drama between the wives and their new families. Editing and shooting shots that made certain parents seem worse and unloving then they really acted. Being sued several times by families that participated. Some families in their local area being reported for child abuse / neglect after episodes aired like the family that fed their kids only raw meat / food and getting their kids taken away. And lastly a family that was so strict with their kids actually resulted in the son shooting and killing his mother and brother then tried to kill himself. This happened a few years after the episode with them aired and the sad part was the woman who was the mother who swapped with that mom said "I knew something like this would happen. That boy was so happy with the freedom I gave him during new rules. They were very strict." So, he got a taste of what life could be like outside the highly religious sheltered reality his parents were forcing them to stay in, and just wanted to stay free.

If the parents want their 15 minutes of fame/shame then fine, go for it but what sane parent wants that for their children, especially with all the known drama involved?

The dad in Sister Wives, Kody, is a terrible father, he's financially irresponsible, and an atrocity of a husband. He's got a ton of narcissistic traits (not trying to diagnose here) and it seems awful just being around the guy. I feel bad for the wives, but especially the kids since they didn't choose this life. (Aka competing for dad's love with 25+ other kids.) I am in no way saying that polygamy is inherently toxic, but this man needs a LOT of therapy before he'll be capable of any kind of healthy relationship.

Agreed. I don't condemn polygamy (if people want to do it let them do it but not for me) but I have heard bad things about that show. One of the things I remember discussing with guys when I was in my 20's, they would always half jokingly, seriously about how great some cultures and religions are for allowing multiple wives. I told them, "You know that in those cultures, the husband pays for the wedding and financially supports all of the wives and children?"

I've always held the theory that the show often employed actors or fakes just so they could be used as a lure to entice the actual crazies to participate in the show. So I think it was a little bit of both. Definitely a lot were made-up or exaggerated stories, but you couldn't have the show go on that long without a few legits finding their way on there I'm sure.
Also, the Jerry Springer show's reputation kind of preceded it too, so even if your drama was mild in real life, audiences watched Jerry Springer for one thing only. You had to play the drama up. Being the trashiest trash you could possibly depict was the kind of thing you were expected to do. I'd imagine anyway if I hold fast to my theory.

They soon fell in love, married, had two children and then divorced and the wife went on to hit the talk show circuit and bash her ex-husband every chance she got and portrayed herself as the (forever) victim. True, but like Christopher said, kid beauty pageants have been around way before reality tv. I think the reality tv aspect made it more popular, more competitive than it already was. I used to think it was just a small town southern thing until toddlers and tiaras, as I grew up in a small town but I've been to different cities and never saw any advertising or talk about pageants there and my relatives up north were shocked when they came down here and saw advertisements for a couple. However any sport or competition will cause some people, more specifically parents, to take it to the extreme; make their kids train til they pass out, give their kid any edge they can, etc. Whenever I played sports or had a test coming up, I was asked if I won or made a good grade if I said I did ok or tried my best, my mom would say "it's ok, you did your best" but I could tell she was disappointed cause she made it obvious. At times, I wished she just realized I tried as hard as I could, but it seemed like it was never really good enough for her

You left out the worst thing about The Swan.
Namely that it all but ruined the lives and self-worth of every woman who went on it.
See, they kept the women in the dark about how the procedures were changing their appearance until unveiling it at the end like it was a surprise.
What this had the side effect of doing, was it gave all of them intense body dismorphia where they no longer recognized who they were anymore.
As a result of this intense mental trauma, many of them were left with broken self-worth, most of their marriages fell apart, and one of the women spoke about how she could barely even leave her house anymore.
This show ruined lives and everyone involved with it should hang their heads in shame.

The only reality show (in a different rendition) on this list I saw, was Fear Factor and to be honest, the appael to me and most other people I believe, were the actual stunts they had to do. The "Food" challenges was always the weakest aspect of the show in my opinion, as I never felt it was fear. Disgust and fear are related but not the same and upsetting someone's stomach is just cheap.
But the amount of series with plastic surgery in them is rather disturbing... I already find cosmetic surgery (for other purposes than reconstruction) often completely unnecessary and unlike with extreme body modification where the appearance after is a least somewhat unique and eyecatching if for most people rather freakish, something that improves anything. Just work with what nature gave you, there is someone out there that will love you for you without the need of altering your body in such a way. The most baffling one for me however was the Bridalplasty one... Why would you do that? Your man already loves you for you, otherwise he wouldn't marry you, right?

I'm not surprised The Moment of Truth is on here, but it missed the absolute WORST moment (of many) on the American version of the show: the Lauren Cleri episode. in it she tells of her infidelity, believing she should be married to an ex, taking her ring off to appear single, and basically being a bit of a... you can fill in the blank.
(to be fair, taking her wedding ring off to appear single doesn't bother me all that much. one of my exes worked in a salon. it was known that men would tip much higher if they believed the stylist was single, so the ex and shed the ring. (don't ask about "Tip Shirts".) my ex made between $15 and $25/hour in tips, plus the basic wage (I think it was $9/hour). so taking the ring off was just part of the hustle.)
in the end, The Moment of Truth was a dumpster fire from the bowels of Hell.

A lot of these shows came to be aired and popularized during the last major strike of the Writers Guild of America. Back in 2007, their last strike lasted over 100 days, which prompted studios to start packing their cable line-ups with shows that covered "live" competitions in singing, dance, and other performance, home renovation shows, dating shows, and unscripted gameshows in order to keep generating ad revenue and viewership. More than 60 scripted TV series were dropped during that same time frame, with others returning with shortened seasons aired prior to the strike, or taking lengthy hiatuses until well after the strike ended. No surprise, casts featuring POC and LGBTQ protagonists suffered exponentially more than shows and films featuring exclusively white and hetero casts. Everything from late night to awards shows took a massive hit during that time, and their viewership has been declining annually ever since. What might stave off another reality TV resurgence now is the variety of streaming services providing online archival content. Not only are there catalogues of intellectual property dating back to the earliest days of film and TV, but cable providers are turning more to live sporting events and news coverage in ways we have not seen in years. Hopefully the two sides come to an amicable agreement soon, because this barren landscape of reality TV could always make a comeback in the absence of superior script writing.

Can’t stand the Kardashians. The name was actually famous long before them because of the dad being OJ’s lawyer. But to say a reality dating show based on dishonesty and deception isn’t what people want is bs. That is why people watch these shows. To see these people fight over men, women, he said/she said/, and so many other things. I mean look at any couples or dating show know and it’s all about creating drama. Drama comes from dishonesty, deception, and things of that nature. That show “Are You Hot?’ Is still around but in different forms.

Kid nation was a great show. I think I wound up watching it because it was on one of these lists but it looked like something I'm super interested in, so I watched it and wound up really liking it. The kids could leave whenever they wanted to, there was supervision to an extent (the way there are like, hidden medics ready to rock on Survivor at a moment's notice that they never show you) so they weren't truly alone. Child labor laws.... this complaint is based around them having to cook food together, build things, etc, because it's a, you know, SURVIVAL show that everybody was briefed on and signed up for. I did not see anything done poorly in the show.
