  • 1998 and earlier JD 445's have a plastic cam gear that fails around 1000 hours. Easy to replace with basic hand tools.
    Update 2023-04-24: 10 years later, this engine now has 1500 hours without issues.

    Thanks for your excellent video... I spent $250 with the local JD 'experts' and a checked with a second one who said they have never heard of it... They said $1000 to open it up, but probably $4000 for a new engine.... (They're $1200 online... labor is a bitch!) the camshaft kit is $300 from JDeere... doing it myself now, and appreciate all the youtube help I can find

But I had fun and was not to hard the people at JD were very helpfull , on where that ball barring fell out from, and the ebay store in Pa , was help full to , not sure why kit did not come with vale seals ,

    My 1996 JD 425 had 1110.00 hours. Back it out at low RPMs from the garage and shut it off and it did not re start.

    • @MikeTeets

      You can tell if it is failed camshaft gear if it spins over like there is no compression. Try pulling a spark plug, and turn over the engine with your thumb over the plug hole. If there is compression, you will feel it alternately suck in and push out air. If no compression, you have an internal failure of the engine and it must be torn down.

    Great video. Looks like my cam gear just went. Expecting a big bill from the local JD dealer. Hope it has many years of life left in it. Before my problem there always seemed to be high crank case pressure. It would blow the oil filler cap clean off. Any ideas? Thanks

    Well done, the video helps even with my non JDeere ZTR Woods mower. It came with plastic gear on the camshaft. Did you do a valve job or simply replace the springs and pushrods?

    • @MikeTeets
      @MikeTeets  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roush2RPP I just replaced the rods and springs. The valves were fine as is and didn't need ground.

    • @Roush2RPP
      @Roush2RPP 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mike Teets Did you lap them and clean up the ports and back side of the valves?
      I also installed a new water pump simply because the engine was open and installing a new one is as easy as an old one.
      Did you replace the oval o-ring and the round one next to it on the "pin" that positions the crankcase cover (there are two on the block surface for the cover. Only the one next to oval shaped o-ring is present.

    Mike, Thx for this video. I had the dealer do this service to my 445 some years back, but I recently found oil leaking from around the head area on the left side. It collects a little bit in the spark plug recess and will burn off if it makes it to the exhaust pipe flange. It is a slow leak now... Would a bad head gasket cause this?

    • @MikeTeets
      @MikeTeets  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ndemarte The head gasket is below the spark plug hole, but the valve cover gasket is above. That is the likely culprit. If you have plastic valve covers, it could be cracked. You can buy metal ones to replace them.

    Is there a way to check to see if I have a steel canned gear without taking the engine apart? Maybe with a bore scope?

    • @MikeTeets
      @MikeTeets  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A forum post somewhere mentioned that you may be able to see it by removing the water pump. I just replaced the water pump on a newer 445 and it was not obvious how you could see it through there, but I was not looking for it. You can look up the engine code (explained here on Kawasaki site: www.kawasaki-engines.eu/en/support/reading-your-engine-label/) AS01 and BS01 have a nylon gear, all others have steel.

  • @williamvanevera4044
    @williamvanevera4044 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    do you have to pull the engine out to do that or can it be done while it sits in the machine? How long did it take you to do it? I have a 1995 425 with the plastic gear and about 500 hours.

    • @MikeTeets
      @MikeTeets  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Others have said it can be done in place. It only takes a few more bolts to take it out and then it is easier to maneuver on the workbench. Ultimately I would say it is faster to remove. If you had the parts on hand, it could be done in 3-4 hours.

    Just found your video, it's very good and was lots of help. The question I have is: I can't find any information as to whether the head bolts are suppose to be lubricated or dry prior to torqued up? Do you have any info or a lead on this info.

      +Pamela Rash you should use anti seize or sealer, torque amounts take this into consideration head bolts should not be installed dry

    Is there a way to confirm if these engines have the steel cam gear in them while in the machine?
    I have two of these motors in running machines that I use currently and was told they were both replaced but haven't confirmed. I'd certainly like to be able to if it's possible!

    • @MikeTeets
      @MikeTeets  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really without pulling the water pump and then you would need a new gasket. Generally folks recommend just running them until you have a problem. Worst case, you bend the push rods and have to replace them... which you would do anyway on a rebuild.

  • @dapetik
    @dapetik หลายเดือนก่อน

    I bought a used 425. 1994 model with 1000 hours. Should i take the time to remove engine and see if the cam is steel or not?

    • @MikeTeets
      @MikeTeets  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would not. The job to replace it doesn't get easier whether you do before or after failure. The only difference might be bending the rods but they are only $4 each.

  • @timbylander7015
    @timbylander7015 ปีที่แล้ว

    My church has a 425 that is just short of 1000 hrs. Same problem. My question is is it an interference engine. I noted you had bent push rods. How about the valves?

    • @MikeTeets
      @MikeTeets  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think it is... but that was 10 years and 800 hours ago on this tractor. I did not replace the valves nor notice any damage. Still runs strong, no oil consumption. Performs as good as my other 445 which is at 600 hours.

    could you use this engine on a gokart?

    • @MikeTeets
      @MikeTeets  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure you could, but I wouldn't recommend it. It is a big, heavy, low RPM engine. Gokarts would be better off with a smaller, lighter engine. For the price of a high hour used FD620 you could get a new 8-16 hp honda or briggs engine.

    Just a comment. I have seen and heard of manufacturers who build engines using plastic formed parts, internally to their engines to in my opinion, cheap out. Very disappointing for the money they are asking for these engines. Built in adolescence it appears. Just saying.
