In July 2018 Bath Community Academy closed its doors for the last time.
The poignant image of red ties hung from the school gates symbolised the ongoing fight by the local community to keep a school open on that site.
Westhill Boys School moved from The Hollow to Rushill in 1956 in order to cope with the growing numbers of pupils. It became known as Culverhay in 1972 - its name taken from an iron age earthwork that could be seen from the site of the school.
In 2012 the school became a co-educational academy and changed its name to Bath Community Academy.
This year, local filmmakers Luke Taylor and Joanna Crosse, decided to create a documentary about the school. Luke studied at Culverhay from 2004 to 2011 and has since gone on to established an award winning film company.
The film offers a nostalgic look at a school that meant so much to staff and pupils over the last 70 years. In this film, we talk to those who have been involved with the school from its days as Westhill Boys School and Culverhay to Bath Community Academy.
At a screening on August 30th 2018, local organisation 3SG talked about the future of the site of the school.
"The Culverhay School site has so much potential. This could include a vibrant community hub and new space for some of the amazing local charities and social enterprises working in and around Bath. 3SG understands that the Council will be undertaking a full consultation on it's future use so we will pull together a list of ideas for the site and we will be feeding that into the planned consultation." BANES 3rd Sector Group (3SG) Please email James Carlin if you have any ideas - james@3sg.org.uk
All images used in this film were donated on behalf of participants, Culverhay School, Westhill Boys School and Bath Community Academy who also provided the Drone Photography.
This film is a not for profit production and was created by Luke Taylor and Joanna Crosse at Lt Film and MetaMedia.

Wow this made me tear up quite a bit, well put together, glad I came across this. Such a moving piece. Mr Robertson, Mr Scarborough, Mr Fleet (Rip) plus so many more played a massive part of my life for so many years. Thank you for creating this 🙏

So many great memories. Dr Carl was an absolute inspiration for me, I always just thought ‘I want to have that passion for science’. It’s not overstating to say he put me on the path that ended as a research scientist and university lecturer.... along with others (Chorley, Robertson, Camp, Hurst, Fawcus) complete inspiration.

Such a wonderful film by Luke Taylor. Schools like this serve communities so well. Unfortunately decision makers only count what they can count, so much of what this school provided is immeasurable in more ways than one. Staff and pupils alike should be proud of what they have achieved in their time there.

Absolutely amazing film Luke. I taught at the school back in 2009/10 and can honestly say it was the best year of my career. Well done for encapsulating the Culverhay spirit on film.
