Keep in mind that during the Knowles era there were six losses, four of them were defensive failures in big games - 30+ and 40+ to Michigan, 30+ to Oregon and 40+ to Georgia. It was after the Oregon loss this year when Day spent two weeks working with the defense that things changed for the better.
You are lying by omission. BOTH of those 40+ point games were in Knowles FIRST SEASON as the DC, using players that he inherited from the previous DC. In Knowles 2nd season as DC, Michigan scored 30 points, but his defense allowed LESS THAN 20 points in each of the other 12 games. In 2024, Knowles defense allowed 32 points to Oregon, but his defense allowed LESS THAN 20 points in 13 games, and 21 and 23 points in two of the playoff games. You're either ignorant, or you're a liar. Which is it?
@Steven-r2w9b Take your pick - it sounds like you have me all figured out. But speaking of omissions, quoting numbers that exclude your true opponents (teams that are highly ranked) and then boasting of numbers against opponents like Akron, Youngstown St, Purdue and the like is cowardly. Insinuating that Knowles received a group of unfit players at Ohio State is even worse.
@ Calling the players that Knowles inherited in his first year as DC as being "unfit" is on YOU, not me. I never said those players were "unfit". Many, if not most, of the players that Knowles inherited were certainly NOT well-versed or suited for the type of defensive schemes that Knowles likes to run, ESPECIALLY since Knowles was an "outsider" and not a coach who came up through the Ohio State "system". What I've figured out about you is that you obviously don't know much about football. You're just a fringe football fan who would probably be better suited to being a women's basketball fan.
@Steven-r2w9b No - clearly you were the one that made an issue of the players he had the first year - not me. Unfit means they were not a good fit for his system or the coaching methods he uses - and that is exactly what you are saying. The players were there already when he arrived (and many were on the field this year as well). It's not their fault if a coach isn't able to adapt his system to the players - that is part of the job. Any more personal attacks? That really is what you seem best at.
@@johnbochenek5526 Actually, I'm through with this "dance" I'm doing with you. You obviously have SERIOUS reading comprehension issues, so I'm DONE with trying to converse with an OAF. You lied by omission, as I easily proved, and your football knowledge can comfortably fit on the head of a pin. I would recommend you read "Football For Dummies" and "Honesty For Dummies".
I'd be shocked if any major player on D transfers to PSU just to be coached by Jim Knowles. Downs already made it pretty clear that he's not going anywhere.
Yeah, you're right. NONE of those defensive players that Knowles recruited to Ohio State the past three years would feel ANY allegiance towards Jim Knowles at all. ROTFLMFAO!
Listen to what the defensive players are saying. I saw the interview with Caleb Downs, Jermaine Mathew’s and Sonny Styles. Without throwing shade on Knowles they respectively talked about how great the remaining defensive coaches are and how they can’t wait to get back to work with their brothers. Across the board they were all good and unfazed and even talked about repeating. So it’s not about why Knowles left and what we lost but why they stayed-when they clearly could have portal jumped for big money-and what we still have. With players with that kind of mentality to match their skill set we’re fine. GO BUCKS
*Not mentioned:* When Knowles attempted to go with his 3 man front, it almost always failed. His defense through the Oregon game wasn't aggressive and rarely use pass rush stunts (just bull rushes). His D didn't dominate until after he had to make changes post the Oregon D disaster. My take is Knowles was scheming a D based on the 3* recruits he had previously, not the studs he has at tOSU. Example - post Oregon, Downs was frequently moved up, had a lot more green lights, and played a much more active role.
You have absolutely NO CLUE what you're talking about. Knowles was NEVER allowed to run the defense he WANTED to run, thanks to Larry Johnson and Ryan Day.
@@Steven-r2w9b You're lost, unable to comprehend what you read. Nobody claimed Knowles ran his preferred D for entire games. Noting he occasionally ran his preferred twists and failed is not the same as saying he ran his preferred D. I hive a limited number of tokens to play, don't waste yours trying to talk past others, in repetition, and/or a tantrum.
Honestly, less than five. I think most, if not all, wil stick with OSU their position coaches. Why take a step backward when it will take a year or two to implement his D at PSU. Go Bucks!
I think if you had to choose between Knowles and LJ, it's time to part with LJ. Knowles was the DC and should have had the final say in any disagreement with a line coach, period. On top of that, the pass rush was anemic the first half of the year despite having 2 five star senior defensive ends who have both played a ton of football, and when they finally made some changes to the pass rush partway through the year is when we finally started seeing more pressures on the QB. LJ needs to get with the times, and Day needs to stop doing what, in my opinion, has been his biggest weakness as a head coach - being too slow to make changes when needed. You shouldh't have to suffer the loss of a big game or a natty opportunity before you finally pull the trigger on a change that everyone can see has been needed for some time already. And I don't necessarily mean LJ here, I mean issues with the defense in years past, but this could be turning into another example of this.
Penn State fans so delusional thinking they're gonna poach our players😂 Downgrading to Jerry Sandusky b tier big10 isn't very enticing for legit OSU players (unless you're our 5th string WR...😂). Apso, Chip is staying imo.
Your coordinators should dictate the offense and defense, not the position coaches. I was in the military. There is a chain of command. Day siding with Johnson over Knowles is just another reason to get rid of him. It's past time to get rid of Day. Fire Ryan Day now.
70-10 u sound stupid. And you mean to tell me there’s people getting screwed over after putting their life on the line for this country? And you come print this online? Clearly no one should listen to you.
Once in Kabul my escort lead said that he was in charge and we were to take all directives from him (SGT). I, the LTC had no problem with that but as the ranking officer, if we happened to get attacked or get into a fire fight, I reserved the right as the senior officer to take charge. And my command was that we would take directives from my subordinate Marine CPT. He was the only one who had actually been in a fire-fight. A good leader has no problem following good / right ideas from subordinates.

Very mature response by Caleb Downs. He’s going to be a great leader on this defense. Thanks Jim Knowles. Good luck at PSU.
