My DIY Indoors Aquaponics System

  • I made an aquaponics system in my bedroom above my bed in order to help de-nitrify my aquarium. The whole system is about 70 gallons with the growbed included. This mix between hydroponics and aquaculture utilizes the high nitrogen waste of fish to grow plants. This is a great idea if you want to increase bio load of your aquarium or just have some beautiful plants growing. I was on a bit of a time crunch since the entire system was being changed the fish was stuck in one tank but it worked out ok. I hope you enjoy, please comment below with any questions!

      Oh your quite welcome, I have 6 kid's of my own and even though half of them are almost grown (ages 23, 19 & 18) I am still trying to teach them as well as my 3 younger kid's (ages 8, 12 & 16) about how to plant their own gardens and grow some of their own food. I just recently heard about aquaponics and I am very interested in learning as much as possible so I can learn how to incorporate this way of growing plants into my gardening techniques...not to mention how much I am sure it will help keep our 2 goldfish aquariums a lot cleaner...which means less back breaking work for all of us as well!

    Wow. You are impressive. I never had the nerve or the encouragement to do what you have done as a young person. My dad was a contractor and yet at almost 55 myself I have NEVER heard of anyone finding studs by minding the nails with a magnet. I don’t know you but I am proud of you! I have subscribed and will watch more videos. You made a positive difference in my day. Michael.

    wow nice system you made there.
    i do think you run the water a little hot for plants.
    if you go higher than 72 degree fahrenheit (23 celsius) plants rapidly get it harder to absorb nutrients.

    I'd also make sure to check on your humidity levels in the room in case of mold from the excess water that's being let into the air. Your drywall could also take a hit and become soft and eventually break down. Your setup looks cool and well planned, but check on those humidity levels for safety reasons.

    I know this is an old video but i gotta add my two cents here.. Its a great design but there are some flaws to it.. first and foremost is that you always run electric above water and i saw an outlet on that wall under your grow bed. if it floods down the wall you have fire risk. second is that your using 2 pumps. while this normally would not be an issue outdoors, eventually one pump will fail and you will over flow.. hopefully the pump that fails is the one in your tank and not your sump. because your sump will overflow the tank but your nice oscar will survive.. if your sump pump goes first then your tank will drain killing your fish and your sump will overflow and make the mess. Keep up the experiments though!!

    Nice work man! I guess my question would be can you step it up a notch and hide the weight supports and all the tubes in the wall. As this is completely functional and great, it lacks the aesthetics to be used in a home your wife would accept (haha as in my wife would say no). So if you can show how to hide this, I think more people would do this. Can you try that? Maybe your mom would be even more pleased. Nice work though!

    • @TheOpelkoenjas
      @TheOpelkoenjas 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      When using led, make sure you get some blue and red in there too, not just all white. This somehow stimulates the plants into growing (mimicking sunlight?). For example for every 6 white LEDs you need 3 blue and two red ones. Keep also the distance of the light source and your plants in mind. But I think you already knew that one. :)

      There is a guy here on TH-cam who has done research already using LED lights for hydroponics. I am on my tablet otherwise I would find it for you and link it. • @eriknakamura
      @eriknakamura  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an interesting question. Do you mean specifically for aquariums? In that case you could just dangle the Pothos into the water and they will grow fine. If you're asking in general terms I would say have a look at floating gardens. In my mind I imagine a shallow pond with rows of floating grow beds. Like a swamp but more controlled.

    • @Joop_Invictvs
      @Joop_Invictvs 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Erik Nakamura Hmmm, so would that still require a fish tank and a plant tank or could they be combined if I used the right plants.

    • @eriknakamura
      @eriknakamura  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can put the plants directly in the fish tank. I did something like that with Pothos and had success. Use some sort of rigid plastic container and drill a bunch of 1/4in. - 1/2in. holes in it and fill the container with lava rock. Then plant the clean pothos roots in the lava rock and submerge the container in the tank with the pothos leaves hanging out over the edge of the tank. I'll send you a pic of what I did. I used suction cups on the container to attach it to the inside edge of the aquarium. Also you could consider using dracaena braunii which is sold pretty much everywhere as lucky bamboo. Its hardy and grows well when dangled in water.

    Hey, you seem like a smart kid - really like your Oscar! If you could answer a question that I can't find anywhere else: How do I match the flow out of and back to my tank with a sump? I have a an extra aquarium I could use, but I tried two of the same pumps, and couldn't get the water to stay level. How do you do this crucial step for a under cabinet sump? Thanks!

    • @eriknakamura
      @eriknakamura  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! You can only use one pump on the system for input/output becasue you'll never be able to get them to match up perfectly. The pump is meant to stay in the sump and pump water into the aquarium, then in the aquarium you need an overflow (you can either drill your aquarium or make a syphon overflow to carry water over the top of the tank, just youtube search PVC overflow). The overflow will return the water to the sump once the water reaches a certain level in the aquarium. So water just returns to the sump via gravity. Whatever water the sump pump pumps into the tank will overflow back into the sump, creating the balanced cycle. Saves energy too....

    Do u really need all the filters?
    Can't you just use some aquarium mesh that collects the bigger pieces as it flows into the planter?
    Also can you describe or show how your water is flowing into your sump from the fish tank? I see the general idea but what's the best way.

    • @eriknakamura
      @eriknakamura  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The benefit of having a filter before the water goes into the plants is that the water is virtually particle free when it enters the grow media, so junk does not collect and build up in it. This makes the grow bed maintenance free. If there was no filter you would probably have to clean out the grow bed pretty often. Also, the fish poop tends to collect on the roots and cause root rot. In my case the filter was already there so I left it. I will do a video going into more detail about the syphon overflow and updating it to a drilled system in 3 weeks. In the meantime, I would just look up "PVC aquarium syphon overflow" I built mine by watching other videos and it works great. Uaru Joey has a particularly good video on it.

      They always absorb and consume oxygen

    • @lm2193
      @lm2193 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Erik Nakamura wrong. plants PRODUCE oxygen under light, but consume oxygen in the dark.

    • @eriknakamura
      @eriknakamura  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Mike l plants always consume oxygen, it's required for the last step of respiration which the plants always do.

    • @lm2193
      @lm2193 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Erik Nakamura im talking about the END RESULT, produce oxygen in day and night consume oxygen, not a minor step in the process of respiration that needs some oxygen. If u sleep with plants in an enclosed dark room (ie. airconditioner room) u will have less oxygen because partially consumed by the plants. there are many cases where naive kids lighted the aromatherapy candle in their enclosed room and dead in their sleep because the candle fire depletes all the oxygen in the room.

    • @eriknakamura
      @eriknakamura  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's not a minor step, it's the same reason we need oxygen for respiration. And I wouldn't worry about a candle or plants suffocating you at night, the numbers just don't add up to make it a risk.

    way too complicated! sump not necessary. keep it simple by pumping the water out of the tank, via a small pump, into grow bed, and then back
    into the tank via a bell float valve in the grow bed.

    • @eriknakamura
      @eriknakamura  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wouldn't recommend that, it's important to keep the grow bed clean and free of any solid waste, so pre filtration is a must.

    • @pershop4950
      @pershop4950 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm thinking the sump was there from before...before the plant system was added. So rather than get rid of it, just the plant section was added in to the path so that part of the water goes back to the aquarium, like before, and the other part goes up to the plants.

    Great Video! Sorry for the intrusion, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you ever tried - Patlarny Gardening Expert Principle (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a great one of a kind guide for learning how to expand your produce with the clever art of aquaponics minus the headache. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my best friend Jordan got amazing success with it.
