Stephen followed this up by winning The Tour De France and then the World Championship in the same year. My Dad knew him well and would slip him some money for winning races in Dublin. He came to visit my father in hospital as he lay dying. He gave such joy to my dad who was in love with cycling for 65 yrs..
Steo was my neighbour growing up. He was always cycling or jogging, training 24/7. He also used to grow bonsai trees in his house, some of which he’d been working on for 15+ years. Unique guy!
Stephen Roche going through hell just to win. As Prince Hal in Shakespeare’s Henry V, Churchill said “If you're going through hell, keep going and don't look back
I met Stephen Roche in Cork back in around 1985/1986 at some sponsored event when I was a young kid as far as I remember it was in Johnson and Perrot Car dealership on the back Douglas road and he was an absolute gentleman. Sean Kelly was there as well and he was a grumpy sour faced toss pot
I visited my relatives in the country in Sligo in the 80s and would go for a run every day. I became known as the "mad fella" that goes running around the fields in the mornings. 😂
