- 🏡 Farmhouse Renovation Update! 🏡
The farmhouse transformation continues! In this update, we take a look at the progress so far-upstairs is completely gutted, with ceilings down and walls stripped back to the stone. It’s a massive job, but we’re making steady progress!
We also managed to remove the old red press from the wall in one piece-no easy task! It’s a piece of history, and we’re glad to have saved it.
Watch along as we see what’s next for the renovation and let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Hi Phil , Frame that page from the Journal with the 3000 series Massey , that was some find lad . See how well it was preserved under the floor . Great piece of history right there . Back when the Journal was a real newspaper n not the crap it is today .👍🏻
We've had veluxes a few decades without problems, you just need to make sure they're installed right on day one. They give a great bit of light.
I’d hate to see what Phil be like if he was building a new house.
Knocking modern heating systems like air to water like he said previously.
I agree too, Velux won’t leak if they installed correctly.
15:12 thats called lath and plaster, the same as what’s on your ceiling. Basically the precursor to plasterboard.
I love to hear all the history and life of this house. Can't wait to see the before and after pictures side by side. You Stewarts get things done!❤
I love what you're doing. Exploring the history of your construction, and giving the thought behind why they built the way they did. One day you may be the host of This Old House Ireland.
Best of luck, and fair weather.
Great to see the walls drying out and being able to breath again, Looking forward to see the house with lime render on them, it'll look brilliant, great job
Our house in Ontario at the farm was build in early 1800's of mud brick a full 2 story house with 3ft thick walls
Put in a skylight or two in the roof if you need to
Great choice putting in the radon barrier, and underfloor heating..put insulation around the walls to bridge the cold coming in and heat moving out
Interesting to see how different houses were Builth & history do keep the old newspaper
Great video Phil, good progress on the house. Enjoyed watching. 👍🏼👍🏼
Lot of history to that old place. Great to see it being preserved
Looks like a lot of recycled bricks and stones of a great age?
Really interesting project guys, best of luck with it,hope we inspired ye with your ploughing accommodation this yeat!
Great work Phil, plenty to keep you busy, but it’ll some job when it’s done👍
Keep the old newspapers and make of when and where they were found. It will be interesting in years to come.
I meant to say make a note.
Some job Phil, well jealous of the progress as im building currently myself!!
Great to see the difference in the walls of the old house. Still standing after all these years. Can’t wait to see the finished project. Another great video Phil.
Funny how people feel the need to knock the choices of others, yes, they have a different outlook, yes, they would do things differently but no, they do not have the same outlook or views that you both have. Advice is one thing, ripping into someone for their choices is a bit off. Be you, do you, let them all do one 😆
Id kerp the bit out the side alr its all extra space
Hi phil, planning on renovating an old farm house on the home farm similar to the shown. You dont have to justify your decisions to anyone. Remember never get rid of anything that you cant replace tomorrow.
We have an old timber ladder and the top of it is narrower than the bottom just like your roof timbers. Interesting how they did things back in the day.
That wall is lav an plaster, an the more light u bring into the building the better it lifts ur mood rather than dark an dinghy
Some of the bricks are bleached with a colour
Awesome to see you guys doing a full restoration.
And finding all kinds of treasures
Always enjoy watching your videos. Should keep that one door that no knew closed and put a glass frame around neat show off
There was a old shell of a house beside me for years it was more or less half standing and this couple bought the house and my god is it some house today amazing property now
The house is going to be beautiful when it's done the cousin's doing a great job 👌 👍
When a velux skyline is installed correctly there a good source of light in a room and make a room look bigger
Phil, Have you thought about ground scource heating for your house? I went to a wedding a few years ago . We Stayed in a barn conversion where the extension had underfloor heating with a ground scource heat pump. The lounge had a log burner but we didn't need to light it even though there was a hard frost both nights.
Great video. Fabulous history in the house… will be even more interesting when this phase of its development is completed. Keep up the good work.
I would recommend lots of natural light, as much as you can. We have parts of our home which are naturally dark and I often regret not having done more to remedy it when we were doing major works.
Perhaps reconsider the option of Velux. I appreciate you’ve had a negative experience but they are not known for leaking and there must be countless thousands in homes across Europe without issue.
A lovely project, best of luck
Very interesting video. Never seen brick built into timber frames. Looks like you are going to do it up properly. Best of luck
Fair play to ye , great to see progress on the house , it will be a fine job when finished as you can’t beat the character of an old farmhouse. Them houses were built to breath and with the modern plaster systems now available dampness or cold won’t be a problem if applied correctly. Considering the cost of building in Ireland today I know I’d be renovating as opposed building new also
Good luck favourite farmers Phil and liv love these videos just wonderful.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Cant believe Dermot bannon had not got wind of this house.... he would spend all u have on it and more
+20k for themselves 😂
Dermot would be knocking walls everywhere and putting loads of glass in
❤❤
@@FARMERPHIL3690 that's for sure
Making great progress, your cousin clearly knows his stuff.
I don’t think that’s wattle and daub 16:12 could be wrong but I think that could be old lath plaster where they used horse hair or even asbestos fibers in pre 1980s. Love the vids
The doorway was blocked up pre 1938 when my grandfather moved there as no one knew it was there and the fibres in it are straw or hay like
I hope you didn't scrap the kitchen cupboard? They're fetching good money nowadays 👍
Hi phil and liv, if you scrap that red press you removed I will unsubscribe you. You probably have as many good memories of that press as I have of an identical sky blue one....
It’s going to go into the shop as a display
Fair play for takin this on. Good luck. 👍
Great video Phil its coming on great it will be a fine house when done
Phil id recommend against underfloor heating i know many many people who have had endless trouble with underfloor hearing with it leeking airlocks damp horror stories i just recently built a house and i bought uo underfloor heating with my plumber and he said no he wouldnt put it in he said he refused to do it to us.
Great interesting video, thanks. Looking forward to following your project. Good luck
Good evening,Phil and Liv. You are both going to have a great house when done. Your cousin is a big help in what he is doing. I would knock the small extension down and build a new one, but thatthat is only my thought I would do what you both want. Are you re using the old kitchen pantry you took out would be really nice if all cleaned out.
Yes plan to use the red dresser as display in the new farm shop
Will you be having any of the old stone on show in house
First class they look lovely on display.
Think ia good idea to keep some.of.the history of the house on display, also great talking point ....
Hi paddy are you getting a euro grant for this mess.?
Your cousin must be so clever to know how to deal with the house
After recently moving into our new house with my wife, building or renovating a house is no small project! But I can safely say it will be 100% worth it when ye get in! 👏 🏡
Really enjoying watching the progress of the build and hearing about the history of it.
As a guess I would say they house was built around the years of WW1 where there was a limited rationing of cement and other building materials and locals made do with wattle and daube, limestone plaster, timber sourced locally etc.
Great video love seeing the progress on the house it’s going to lovely when it’s finished ! You should definitely frame that article about the 3000 series Massey along with a nice picture of your uncle Ian
Phil / Liv by God ye have one hell of a job on there to be fair.Going to be some task to get those walls & straight for plaster. But as they say ''where theres isa wiil there is a way'' & ye have it in ton loads. Loved the production as usual & Keep 'er Lit.
Great vid today
Brillant video lads that house is going to be fab fair play to ye
Better enjoy this time with your house Phil your not going to get in with your wellies on for much longer😂
What will you use to heat the house , take its a given you dont have mains gas
That's a valuable cubard to the right man
I have seen wattle and daub walls before in an old house. Literally tree branches, straw, mud and sods of turf of all things. Seriously old stuff
Hjya Phil and Liv, the box room can be a dressing room/clothes room. Just an idea folks. Every woman needs a dressing room Phil ! ❤
chimneys were always built with brick back in the day .......they drew up smoke a lot better ......brick was very expensive back then ......
Hallo Phil could you tell me what is the name of the new power washer thanks Pat.
Kranzle
Interesting house project.
I can understand your want to maintain some history and that house undoubtedly has plenty of history - but here is a interesting question - if the cousin wasn’t in the trade would you go down the restoration journey ?
If you are going to build onto the house it might be worth considering some kind of maybe glass interconnection between the old and the new!
Yeah we’d still be restoring it it’s just a bonus that the cousin is at the trade
@@FARMERPHIL3690 good on ye. And the very best of luck with the project. I hope you continue to bring us all on yours and Livs journey
Looks like a lot of work.
Good stuff
Think should put in sky lights brighten up room.make look bigger
Would the newly built den be same size/place as it is now or extended forward to fit in line with the main house? In fairness those windows look small and limit sunlight. Some other old houses would have tall windows and makes a huge difference
Same size just larger windows and the door has to be changed and the chimney on the end won’t be going back
When you take roof off, will you raise walls so to have flat ceiling upstairs?
No
Is their grants available for restoring old houses?.
I'm starting to think you are not the first to remodel that house over the years
Are you goin to save the roof slates where possible and your wood burner?
there might be the name of the brick yard that made them stamped on the brick on the wide side
If you dry line the walls I recommend skim the plaster board it's a bit more expensive but a better job
We won’t be drylinginf the walls the cousin has a special plaster that acts like insulation and lime plaster letting the walls breed
You should give the cousin a name….
keep the fire place nice old thing that is
you ripping out that old stove downstairs to the right buyer they go for a few bob in the uk sold one months back for 200 quid
I'd tend to agree with liv, what do you need with all the light 😂
those roof timbers were sawn in a pit ........thats an old house .......!
👌👌💪💪👏👏🇮🇪🇮🇪🙏🙏👍👍
House will have character when finished liv will be in her element picking out furniture u will need deep pockets phil😢
Will you be at Cavan machinery show tomorrow??
Yes
It's called lat and plaster
Who is the cousin? Give him/her a name instead of saying THE COUSIN all the time
Perhaps Phil’s cousin does not want to be named. Why are you making orders?
@@MPD2072 well he says charlie a couple times to liv but not the camera haha
The silage cutting at 37pounds an acre would probably have been profitable back then.
Moving right along and looking fabulous. I know water is a problem in your country
If ur looking for carpentry work I do in my spare time on your house
Second
Cut your losses and knock it , sentimentality will cost you a fortune and you will never get rid of the musty old house smell.
i suggested that a few weeks ago ,
@@jimosullivan4866Why would they do that a lovely house like that Uncle Ian lived there so much history you need history. We admire what they are doing good luck to Farmer Phil and liv .🎉
i have said this all along every video the house looks worse, be a damp dark house for ever
I agree it will never be as good as a new house unfortunately.
You’re all so critical of farmer Phil so disgusting and disgraceful. To you
first
my god that house just get worse every video flatten it and start again be cheaper and quicker
if you were not on you tube would you still repair it think not it will always be an old damp house and hard to heat rub it out and build a new one
House was never really damp and wasn’t hard heated with the new stove and TH-cam or not we’d still be doing what we’re doing
@@FARMERPHIL3690proper order. You can't replace something that has been there centuries
Interesting comment, live in a old, formerly cold, but not damp house, once wall and roof insulation, double glazing and decent heating systems installed it is a wonderful house to live in. Know of horrible new builds with dampness and overheating in the summer.
Those old stone walls have natural cavity insulation with air spaces in between the lime mortar outside edges. This creates a natural cavity holding in heat in the winter and cool in summer. the lime plaster allows the moisture to get out so these old houses never had damp or mould growing in the walls. Mould is a modern day phenomena because the modern “better” concrete won’t allow the damp out of the house. Modern builders could learn a lot from the old masters who couldn’t cheat with industrial plastics and insulation. The house is a credit to you and will outlive us all and all the modern houses being built. Look at the modern ones crumbling already because of mica. 👍
He's needs A house to live in now that's he's got a wife
