Cesar has such a beautiful voice, so ethereal and breathy sounding. I'm so glad he's in voiceplay. He also brings such good vibes to a lot of their more upbeat songs. He's one of my favorites.

This one is so hauntingly beautiful, a year or two from when I first heard them do this, it is still what I consider their quiet masterpiece.

Cesar knocked it out of the park. He's an amazing choice for opening the song.
    Hech, they were all stellar.

You can definitely feel the pain in Cesar's performance he's so expressive. been listening to this non-stop LOL

Yeah, Cesar reaches right inside and grabs your heart in this one - and his voice itself is spectacular

This one just rips your heart out. The anguish that they are showing. I don’t know how anyone who’s ever been through a tough break-up could listen to this and not get choked up. Cesar doesn’t just look heartbroken, but confused about how this could happen to him. Then EJ comes in with more power, as if he’s processing the whole situation. And then Geoff coming in low and alone - acceptance that it’s over. Heartbreaking.
I don’t usually like sad songs, however this one is so beautiful. But it pretty much makes me tear up almost every time I listen to it. It’s such a departure for the kind of work they’ve been doing lately. Although they have done beautiful slow ballads before, this one is special.
But Cesar! He’s Mr. Sass, he’s the one who flirts with the camera. It’s such a revelation to see a completely different side of him.
I think we desperately need one of Layne’s more humorous arrangements to follow this up. I felt the same way when Geoff did Ain’t no Sunshine. I felt the same way after he released that. Thank goodness he followed it up with Way Down

Loved your reaction to this one. A little skeptical at first, but could see as Cesar drew you in. A nice change of pace for VoicePlay.
Cesar is listed as baritone, but he is the one that sang the highest notes in Dream On. (But then, all of them have very wide ranges.)
I have a suggestion for you that doesn’t seem to be reacted to very often. Just after Earl left the group, the remaining four did Heart of Life. That song helped me tremendously at a time I really needed it and - Layne’s voice!

Now and then they do a ballad and leave us all weeping...
did you listen to their mini, Crazy (Patsy Cline)? Cesar gave an advance hint of what he can do with that voice, and what a good vocal stylist he is.

I wasn't sure what you'd think after you thought the original was slow, because the tempo on this version is even slower. But the slowness allows you to appreciate the vocals and the harmonies. Cesar has a wide range of both pitch and tone - he can belt it out too.

yeah all the guys in Voiceplay have amazing voices, but some songs just seem to draw out that "something special" out of them and all of a sudden you sit there going "damn, I knew he was good, but holy shit!" 😄😄
it's like something in the song really connects with them and it shows in their voices. Cesar has been singing this song since he was young, it was special to him. you can tell that this song is something he really connects with, and that draws out that little extra.

Cesar was the person that really wanted to do this one, and the rest of VP came through. I love your word "ethereal", it definitely fits. I think it's in my top 3 favorites because it is everything the lyrics foretell and Cesar did it so perfectly. Have you done "We're Good"? That was the first time Cesar sang with VoicePlay. His singing in that video forecast the talent he possesses. When VoicePlay introduced Cesar as the new member, Geoff said something like "Cesar does it all, the theatrics, with or without costuming. He just fits in."

I just love their version of “True Colours” as well, I highly recommend it! It’s very emotional too, from when both J None and Earl were still in the group. So there’s no Cesar.
I agree, Cesar is great! I enjoyed him in the first two songs that VoicePlay featured him (“We’re Good” and “Butter”), but he stole my heart in the third one, “If I were a Rich Man/Girl”, which was his first as an official VoicePlay member.

The Cardona brothers ( EJ & Omar ) always blend well with VoicePlay. Cesar was exceptional and made me cry was heartbroken for him.

Cesar’s emoting, his breathy tones, and the confused battered puppy looks just move me to tears every time. Eli and EJ are both amazing and very emotive, but it’s Cesar that really moves my heart.

The song is very slow and normally I wouldn't listen to it, but when they released it and I heard Cesar's voice it drew me in... The more I hear it, the deeper I fall. .. It's somewhere between relaxing and heartbreaking... 💔🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

How about 'ethereal'. Yes, we heard glimpses of what Cesar can do earlier, but not as beautiful as in this cover. And to have Layne singing as well, with no percussion.

He check out the original singer Bonnie Raitt with Bruce Hornsby 1991. Also George Michael 1997 and Teddy Swims 2019 covered this song.

I have a theory that acapella is more potent than traditional full-instrument music when the lyrics are particularly poignant, because it shines a spotlight on those lyrics. Then add Cesar, who really embodies the character when he sings... and you've got a recipe for heartbreak in this instance.

  • @wolfmama7879

I know I'll catch hell from those that love this version, but.. it's like they did a Disney make-over. The pathos of the original is gone in favor of a shiny display. Bonnie's carries the weight of experience and true heartache, and it comes through in her voice. Just my two cents.

The vocals, and the harmonies are pretty good, and may have actually added a bit to the original. However, I will always feel that this is a song that I first heard performed by a woman, and it just seems like a song that a woman should sing. I especially disliked the baritone part near the end. While I cannot say that this is a bad rendition, it’s not, and never will equal Bonnie Raitt’s version. ✌🏼😎
