The original will always be a classic, but I love the extra guitar fills in this Fugees' cover.
When this plays on the Fugees album The Score, it immediately follows a truly gut-wrenching haunting skit. A hardened brother from the hood is talking to his friend about the scene of a horrific shootout with people dying around him. In the background, there is someone who won't stop moaning out loud, it sounds like he is dying alone in an alley and no one is helping him. It continues throughout the skit. Maybe he's a casualty of the shootout. The narrative from the main guy talking is cynical and disheartened. He talks about a 12-13 year old kid being shot and his mother coming out and seeing it and "crying her head off." and the fact that life in the hood never gets any better. They have no hope. All the while this dying man keeps crying out in the background.
Then it goes to this track. And Wyclef hits these comforting gentle notes on his guitar and says "This song is dedicated to all the refugees worldwide."
And then sometimes this suburban white boy who's barely even set foot in the hood gets a little choked up.

Whenever I listen this fugees' song, I remember loved ones and friends whom I can't see again.
It is lonely, it is also nostalgic.
i did not live in war era however i lived with my grandparents in post war era. i remember growing up and looking around realizing how much it effected to my grandparents and to my uncle which effected to my life. the ghost of the past lingered on to my life, the invisible war. i think somehow its easier to feel love when one is weak but when its all over depression in a economic and emotional sense. not long after the war my uncle took his own life like the soldiers turn the gun to themselves
i am a refugee and i miss my country. i miss my family and most of all i miss the people i lost. war is never ever the answer. you know just how wrong it is if you were ever at a war scene.
