20 years ago the only concern was getting a scope that had enough adjustment range to get a bullet trajectory to 1000 yards. 30mm main tube scopes and/or canted bases solved that problem and a ml dot reticle permitted target ranging so pretty much anybody could shoot at long range successfully at that point with some knowledge about the effects of wind and slope on trajectory. Today, scopes have more features which are seen as paramount to success but these are often distractions to good long range shooting like mil scale dials over MOA, which is total nonsense. At any rate, start your long range training shooting in iron sight Service Rifle Competition which will clarify everything important to good shooting at long range, then if you still believe a scope will improve your performance you will see what’s really paramount is a reticle which makes consistent sight alignment easy to recognize.
