People should read whatever they enjoy and people should feel the freedom to write whatever they want to. However people should also be allowed to pick apart whatever they want as well. That's how I enjoy things, even the more simple stuff that you mostly turn your brain off for, and it gets really annoying being told repeatedly "Well you're giving it too much thought, just read something else instead" when all I'm doing is enjoying it the way I like the most as well. People tend to see people picking things apart as only ever negative or constructive, when in reality there's also a group of people that just enjoys the process of picking it apart and sharing their thoughts on it. If people are allowed to write and read books that don't require a lot of deep thought behind it and enjoy it, why aren't people also allowed to enjoy picking those stories apart the same way they enjoy picking apart the deeper reads? It's just weird since people don't really say much if you say you like to look for plot holes in B grade movies, but if you like to do it with books its weirdly more sacred?
@@Penquinn14 Well, I'm also someone who finds enjoyment in "Picking apart" stuff. But there is a way that can be done while still making it clear that you're not talking down on the people just enjoying it. Many times "fun nitpicking" falls over the line. And you also have to know the place and audience. I'm autistic and have many times failed on that point. If someone is enjoying something, don't stomp in and rain on their parade. Also, doing complement sandwiches work well. Starting with "I know this is a fun show and they are not going for realism in costuming but here is my analysis on how it compares to historic fashion [...]". And people really look down on so many different genres in all media.
Sometimes that function is detrimental to society lol. Like, there is a difference between maybe a YA romance fantasy and a reality show about rich losers.
Parent trap actually saved my parent's marriage (kind of). When I over heard my mom tell her best friend at the time that she wanted to divorce my dad I freaked out. So, just like the parent trap, 11 year old me with my siblings made dinner for my parents and tried to make it fancy. We made grilled cheese and cut it into triangles, applesauce as a side, and had the chips surround a lit candle. Afterwards me and my siblings told my parents we wanted to try to work things out. It worked, but not in the way you expect. Instead of going to marriage counseling like normal couples do, my mom decided to join the military and leave us for a year which lead my dad to give himself a huge reality check. Big life change that heavily favored us in the end though.
Making the White people discuss what is anti-Black is so funny. Kiana is hilarious. I do that to my White friends too and seeing them react is priceless
Oh shit you're right! Except its worse because it's joking off of an accent, like if there was a joke to say "pip pip cheerio" with a british accent. I hope all the Au Naur people get that "embarrassed remembering it while trying to fall asleep" in 5 years.

Shayne and Court trying to out-yap eachother. Amanda talking about Nick Lachey was sooo funny and true I cried laughing. The pool lmao, wish they pulled that clip up when she was talking about it
I'm so glad Shayne brought up ACOTAR and the purpose of certain books/shows/movies/media. I've always been such a vocal supporter of purely entertaining movies because people are too often snobby about the 'classics' and 'critically acclaimed' stuff. But like sometimes, sitting down, cracking a beer open, or pouring a glass of wine, and putting on some Shrek 2 has so much meaning behind it as well.
Seems like all ppl want to talk about nowadays is how they’re sick of classics and critically acclaimed stuff and prefer watching Netflix. Like I get it, we all like entertainment, but most of the ‘content’ streaming services exclusively cater to audiences nowadays is pretty miserable. Shrek 2 is great, like thats a well-made movie. Whats so awful about liking critically acclaimed stuff or classics, those used to be one and the same as purely entertainment
@@GuineaPigEveryday In 10 years time all media consumed is just going to be commercial slop because people are too lazy to think a little bit harder about the media they are consuming. It quite literally is the dumbing down of the world.

Mrs. Doubtfire is one of those "divorced parents" movie. You see Stu as the bad guy the whole movie as a kid, but when you are grown up watching the movie, you see that he is a genuinely good guy and Daniel is the one that is doing the wrong thing (for most of the movie).
As someone who had a parent who didn’t try at all, I’d argue that Daniel’s heart was in the right place the whole time, he just had issues placing it appropriately for the sake of his family. So he’s a little less wrong imo
@@faeri_ Yes, he is putting his love for his children above all else, and that is a good thing to a point. Just the way he kept trying to sabotage Miranda's nanny hiring and her relationship with Stu was not the best choice. My parents are divorced, and my dad has been with my stepmom for over 20 years now and he is way happier now than he ever was before the divorce.
@@Kuchhh I don't really think so, at least from an adult perspective. Daniel loves his kids, but he tried to sabotage his ex-wife's relationship, made his older children lie to their mother, and the whole reason he became Mrs. Doubtfire was because the court rightly decided that he couldn't properly take care of the children to get equal custody. Daniel had to just improve his childrearing and domestic skills and the court probably would have changed the custody agreement down the line: there was literally no need to become Mrs. Doubtfire.

Okay but the way Shayne describes Challengers as a romance/drama that tricks you into watching a sports movie is exactly the same as Song of Achilles. You might think it’s a romance but it’s actually a really well written and researched war novel.
As a child of divorce, I despise the Parent Trap so much for both vilifying stepparents and implying that all you need to do is make your parents love each other again! Feels really gross to me.
It's funny how they brought up the babygirlification of men as if the Smosh fandom hasn't been locked onto Ian for that for over a year LOL I feel like there's a whole subculture in Smosh fandom that is just about how babygirl Ian is. Also, shoutout to Shayne for mentioning BTS during that whole convo about musical artists shaping the landscape, if we're talking music AND performance AND spectacle nothing really outdoes k-pop these days and they really are at the top of it.
as a swiftie, totally respect courtneys opinions on the eras tour/renaissance tour. i think a lot of people go to the eras tour vs the renaissance tour for very different reasons, both to see really incredible women tho! i think its amazing how music rn is being dominated by women and so many records r being broken, what a time to be alive
also dont love calling myself a swiftie usually, because a lot of swifties are very over the line and a bit too much, but for the sake of this comment i will !
Exactly. Like personally I think Taylor is a much more story oriented person and performer and her performance is much more focused on connecting with the audience and making you feel the songs, while Beyoncé I feel like is more of just a spectacle to watch (plus her music is more disco+house music so it’s more fun to like dance to and stuff). Neither one are bad artists or anything, it literally just depends on what you like.
@@ink5224 truly most people who would call themselves swifties are totally normal pleasant people, the loud minority just gets way too much airtime!! I went to the eras tour alone and the people there were so pleasant and amazing
Totally agree on reading for entertainment. I read (and write) fantasy because I enjoy the escape and imagining these other worlds. So many people assume that because I'm a reader and writer that I enjoy self-help books or classics. I don't most of the time. I want to read something riveting, where I say, "Just one more chapter, and then I'll go to bed."

Hearing smosh cast talking about reading & how dumb head empty "books" is so legit & so real. Because of that I got back into reading & I've read so much manhwa after not reading for years.
I think what's so important about the head empty book reading is that there's a huge discussion in literature about who chose the "classics" as well. Like most of the classics are by or from the view point of affluent white men, and very rarely do you get a classics written by people of color offered up first. It was something we spoke about a lot when I was getting my English degree and I think that it's important to think not only about what books are being recommended but also the pool of books that they are coming from.
This is not true for contemporary classics. The truth is that literature by people of color or people who aren't western is hardly comparable to fantasy erotica written by and for teenagers.
(I love head empty books, I just think it is disingenuous to pretend that we cannot have a conversation about the quality in the content of books without falling into talking only about the same dead white western men)
Plus there are literature classics from almost any country in the world. The classics of English lit might mean a small selection of a specific demographic, but literature does go beyond American and British lit.
@@UnBesoDeCristal so right dude! And then its like based in readership too like just because children or teens gravitate towards a book it no longer has the ability to be ingenuos?
I looooove how Shayne talks about how we shouldn't be shamed for reading books that are not what people conventionally consider "real" literature!!! I have always loved YA books and I have always been shamed by people because, according to them, "that is not real literature. You should read REAL literature". I just want to read what I want! I don't want reading to be a chore, and sometimes (most of the times), those big ass chunky books people consider "classics" are PLAIN BORING So thanks Shayne for advocating for reading for plain, mere pleasure, and not to gain anything from them except FUN

She was just being honest. Beyoncé is a grown woman with kids and a husband who puts on a stage performance like the black queen she is. Taylor Swift is a bit one note and her relatability is very difficult if you are not a white woman. Representation matters and one of them is a lot more relatable to the global majority❤️❤️❤️

read what brings you joy. Reading shouldn't be a chore. It should be a fun activity that offers you something. Be it escapism, knowledge, or new perspectives. I personally love to read fantasy and sci-fi, those are escapist books that I can get lost in even more than tv or movies.

Kiana is truly a creative icon. This idea is genius. I'd love to see more birthdays celebrated via the podcast with topics curated by the birthday person. For the cast, they can be the ones on the pod giving the list. With the more camera shy members of Smosh, there can be a proxy like Courtney was. Also, Kiana had great topics.
The one-sided feud between Amanda and The Lachey’s is iconic

I love that the picture they threw up for the actress at 15:00, talking about if the character was gay or not based on the clothes and vibe, is the exact same outfit Amanda is wearing in this episode lmao
Easter egg from The Parent Trap no one asked for the mom of the evil fiancée is the original evil fiancée from the original 1961 version. 🤣
One of my first thoughts when they were talking about it!! 😂😂
Nice! I haven't seen the original parent trap but I always think it's fun when reboots do that.
The fiancee is also the character model of Alex Wesker (Albert Wesker sister from Resident Evil)
All I’m saying is that if someone at Smosh wanted to do a whole Podcast talking about Glee in depth, I would 100% be here for it
so reallll
I don’t even know where they would start like the storylines are unbelievable😭
Agreed!
Oh same
I would, personally, completely ignore that podcast. I have no interest in Glee and have never seen it. Sorry guys.

Literally all of this but Happy Feet instead of Shrek 2 for me. Both iconic and they low key give similar energy.
The signature Courtney burp in the beginning really sealed the deal that this episode would be great
0:29
Courtney was there when the video started, but that burp was when we knew that she'd arrived.
I really love when you guys talk about random things that bring up lots of little stories! I think it's so much more entertaining than the episodes where you try to stay on one topic the entire time. Love seeing you just have fun!
I could have listened to a 3 or 5 hour video of these conversations! I like these random topics that lead to genuine tangents and stories 😄
Mrs. Doubtfire is one of those "divorced parents" movie. You see Stu as the bad guy the whole movie as a kid, but when you are grown up watching the movie, you see that he is a genuinely good guy and Daniel is the one that is doing the wrong thing (for most of the movie).
Moral shades of grey, I’d say.
@@Kirky64 I love that for your dad! 🫶🏽
Doubtfire.

Please consider doing the challenge again this year! Let’s make ALS livable until we can cure it!
Okay but Meridith WAS awful… she had no business marrying someone with children.
Still a bad message to send kids
Some step parents are vile and the movie capitalizes on that fact.

Right! Like I want to get back into reading so I want to start head empty books but I feel like I only own non-head empty books
Me with manga! I have read sooo many manga and graphic novels so far this year, with a handful of novels spread throughout.
59:52 “I don’t think I know this!“
“YES. YES. FUCK YOUU”
😭😭😭

Kiana deserves so much attention for her work on Smosh, happy birthday!!!
this is such a cozy episode they're really just yapping
This episode gave so much "We're in our 30s" energy and im here for it
I looooove how Shayne talks about how we shouldn't be shamed for reading books that are not what people conventionally consider "real" literature!!! I have always loved YA books and I have always been shamed by people because, according to them, "that is not real literature. You should read REAL literature". I just want to read what I want! I don't want reading to be a chore, and sometimes (most of the times), those big ass chunky books people consider "classics" are PLAIN BORING
So thanks Shayne for advocating for reading for plain, mere pleasure, and not to gain anything from them except FUN
I'm a sucker for a YA fantasy novel
Maybe my favorite episode of Smosh Mouth in so long! I love the idea of someone giving Shayne and Amanda random topics to talk about and just have them riff about them for an hour. No notes, 10/10

Them talking about how 2014 was peak Millennial is very true, I sorta miss it though because self awareness was at an all time low from like 2008-2016, you could be punk, emo or scene, memes were a set image with an unironic top and bottom text and say things like ermahgerd, on fleek, legitness and an all time favorite of mine "welp"
Specifically "Welp" I used to use A LOT in 2014-2016 it was like my catch phrase, and I love that Shayne still says "welp" quite a bit
Swiftie here and what Courtney said about swifties hating them made me so sad 😢 I would NEVER expect people to like TS to the degree I do. I’m not a fan of Beyoncé but I recognize the INCREDIBLE talent she has. Love to all of you and love this entire discussion ❤❤❤

Lisa from Temecula is a top tier SNL bit. Hard agree with head empty reading and there being societal pressure to read "expected" books. 10/10 episode. No notes.
