In Uganda,Malewa refers to a traditional dish made from smoked bamboo shoots, which is a specialty of the Bagisu (or Gisu) people of the eastern region, particularly around Mount Elgon. The bamboo shoots are harvested, cleaned, and then smoked over an open fire to preserve them. These smoked bamboo shoots are then rehydrated and cooked, often with groundnut (peanut) sauce, to create a nutritious and flavorful meal.Malewa is an important cultural dish among the Bagisu, especially during significant events such as the traditional male circumcision ceremonies known as "Imbalu." The dish is valued not only for its unique taste but also for its cultural significance and nutritional benefits.
you might be asking yourself how Malewq tastes....this is what I think...it tastes like mushrooms just that malewa has hard fibers...and it can easy be mistaken for a piece of meat...

I enjoyed the video on malewa/bamboo shoots. I have never heard anyone calling it maleya. I know malewa is correct because Mrs. Naomi Aryada who introduced it to my family calls Mbale home. Malewa cooked in gnuts sauce tastes like dried mushrooms, just as yummy.

UWA must allow indigenous to continue to harvest as they have done for decades. We have lived in harmony with wildlife without adversely affecting game and biodiversity. There must be a balance in preserving our cultural practices.
