The Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church both trace their origins back to the early Christian Church, which was established by the apostles of Jesus Christ in the 1st century. They were originally part of the same unified Christian Church.
However, the formal split between the two occurred in 1054 AD, during what is known as the Great Schism. Chronology:
The Roman Catholic Church: After the Great Schism in 1054, the western part of the Church, centered in Rome, continued under the leadership of the Pope. This became known as the Roman Catholic Church.
The Orthodox Church: The eastern part of the Church, centered in Constantinople and other major cities like Antioch and Alexandria, became what is now known as the Eastern Orthodox Church.
So, neither the Orthodox Church nor the Roman Catholic Church can be said to have been founded before the other, as they both stemmed from the same original Christian community. Their divergence came later due to theological, political, and cultural differences that led to the Great Schism.
