    One of if not the best, most reliable, bullet proof truck engines ever built! No speed demon but torque for days!

    Hello From Ky, I have two F-150s; A 1985 with a carbureted 300 and a NP435 4 speed. The other truck is a 1990 F150 with a EFI 300 and the E4OD transmission thatI have been having some problems with slipping. I noticed by the sound of your truck that your truck is straight piped like my 1990 is. My OEM muffler was rotted out and I went to Autozone and bought two different sizes of straight pipe in place of the muffler and a new tailpipe with the muffler clamps and I haven’t changed a thing since. Initially I had also bought the long Cherry Bomb muffler to replace the old OEM muffler - But loved the sound of the straight pipe. Now if I could find a transmission shop that wouldn’t try to rip me off on rebuilding the E4OD transmission.

      Yup its staight piped. Thats Bummer bout the trannie slipping, at least it's the E4OD, and not the AOD, it's a better trannie though it's probably more expensive to rebuild.........

      @@betogray9765 I think that I am going to try to drop the transmission pan, drain the torque converter and replace the filter before I do any drastic moves. The other day, I bought a can of the SeaFoam TransTune and have been driving the truck around not too far away from home to see if the SeaFoam does anything. So Far, I can see some improvement from before - But I don’t want to jinx myself. I have my other Ford with the 4,speed that I mostly drive if I want to go farther away from home. There’s nothing like having a spare truck.

    • @betogray9765
      @betogray9765  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know the feeling about the spare truck, I had to buy a car while my truck was torn apart, and it's so nice to have an extra vehicle. Though in Illinois it sucks because license is $151 a year. Anyway not going to tell you what to do, but I've been told that if a tranny is slipping not to change the fluid because there is a good chance that after you change it it won't work at all, something to do with the grit or something in the oil.

    • @TheIronDuke502
      @TheIronDuke502 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@betogray9765 Yeah, I have also heard both sides regarding replacing the transmission fluid. Being that Ford was nice enough to place a drain plug in the torque converter on the early E4OD transmission, I’m hoping that I can get rid of much of the crud by draining the fluid from both areas.
      I am wanting to go the extra step and also flush the transmission lines going to the radiator and that portion of the radiator. The transmission shop told me that they charge around $300.00 to do transmission fluid service which sounds really expensive. I really hated the thought of spending that kind of money for something that was a pure gamble. The guy never did tell me exactly what he was going to do or whether he felt like that he could make an improvement for the $300.00 - So back to square one. So I bought my own case of ATF and filter for when I decide to tackle the job. I had to replace the old OEM Motorcraft starter & solenoid a little while back in which I decided to try one of the Pure Energy starters like Junkyard Digs used in some of his videos. The starter whirls the engine over pretty quickly with none of the unwelcome fitment issues with the shins like the Advance Auto Parts and Autozone starters seemed to have. The Pure Energy starter seemed to be a heavier built starter than the Motorcraft starter that I removed was. One word of warning, Those starter solenoids that the auto parts stores like Autozone have are pure crap - I went back with Motorcraft and the fit was perfect. With the solenoids that Autozone had, The large terminals didn’t seem to be quite long enough to accommodate all of the wire terminals like the Motorcraft solenoid did. I also installed a ground strap from the ground post on the battery terminal to the bracket for the alternator as well as a ground strap going from the battery over near where the solenoid bolts on in which really seems to help the alternator. Unfortunately Fords have not been known for their grounding - Especially if there are a bunch of options like my 1990 XLT Lariat 150 has. The 1985 150 which is pretty much a “Plain Jane” seems to always work perfectly with virtually no options other than the AC. It’s been raining quite a bit here in Central Ky - So no spontaneous combustion around here.

    If the trailer had trailer brakes and you had them plugged up on your truck. Excellent. If not. Then I agree with your last statement. I drive everyday a 96 F150 4.9 5 speed short bed. My only problem is my rear ratio to high and the Mazda 5 speed. I have a small block ZF5-47 coming. I pull a 5500 lb camper.

      So far it's been a pretty good truck. This summer I plan on doing quite a bit of work to it, it needs various things like a rear main or something on the back of the engine, it's leaking oil like crazy. An engine mount, and then I need to swap in the front axle make it four-wheel drive. First I have to rebuild it though (the TTB)... so yeah, stick around for more content!

    8k with highway gears.... Not ideal. I used to tow cars all the time w/ a 2.2L 4cyl 1990s S10 5spd w/ 3.73:1 rear. That was even less ideal.
    My e150 5.0 3.55 was ok at towing but 10%+ grades were taxing

      LOL seen many grain trucks with Ford or gm straight 6 gas engines. They drive 2mph along chopper in field then haul 26,000# gross down the road 55mph to the elevator. That 300 engine used to be an option in said choppers FYI where they turn 3200 or 3600rpm literally all day long.
