My father would have loved to see this. He flew DC3'with the RAF during WW2 in the VIP section of Transport Command and he loved building scale model aircraft.
I think I've discovered something to do with my retired free time. I haven't built any balsa wood model airplanes since I was about 12 years old. (I just turned 70, lol.) Thanks for sharing this, it's quite detailed.
Did a Guillows Cessna 150 like this some 4 years ago. Covered it in Ultra-Coat transparent neon yellow and neon red. Awesome little plane full RC. Gotta love the mods to make it happen.
Wow this takes me back to my modelling days and the smell of dope and white glue loved it I wish I had kept my old Futaba radio and my 4 strock diesel engine thanks for the memories loved watching it
Love this build. Do you have any details on how you connected the undercarriage servos to the actual gear? could not catch it in the speedy video. Thanks
I used to build with balsa, the only thing around in those days, and remember my first plane ,a thunderbolt, this build brought back memories. Thanks for the video.
Its so cool to see someone make one exact like mine exept i bought my balsa and cut it by hand and wrapped it with see through plastic to see the inside but toher than that its amazing
I’m scratch building a P-47D / 25-30 RA bubble top Thunder Bolt. With 30” wing span five channel set up electric set up. Still not sure how to figure out what size electric motor to use? I’ve been building air planes out of balsa since the 1960’s. I love free flight models the best. Rubber band powered or CO-2 powered but now with this amazing electric motor set up I have to give them a try.
Thanks. I love the DC-3 or C-47. Perhaps the first modern airplane in terms of reliability and endurance, and grand-father to all modern airplanes. :-)
I love balsa builds. I built 2 or 3 and enjoyed building them more then flying them. Back then there were only gas powered ones, may try an electric one at some point. Even thought about building one and not covering it and just us a model
am very impressed with the way you build the DC-3, what kind of mavegation and ground lights and beecons you use and also how you run the landing gear system. and finally, what material do you use to cover the plane. . . .MONOKOTE ??? You have thought about building a DC-6 too.
Never put pins through longerons spars etc, surround the pins around the pieces always and use a little thought in where to put pins in,needles are less destructive to the parts, Perhaps try white wood glueing the holes afterwards if one must puncture the wood? Nicely made your model well done.I found some gentleman had brought up all the remaing Kiel Kraft kits and tools in Cornwell some years ago . Minniemower Glider and Chieften are wonderfull freeflight kits and today easily converted to RC. Be Blessed and thanks for the video showing.
For this build I just used foam board. It worked very well and is cheap. I have seen people use cork board but I have not tried it myself. I would recommend the foam board.
Haven't started mine yet. Pat Tritle design. Impressed with retracts, and built up nose bowl. Has it flown ? Is there a normal build thread on RCG? Mine will be in Flagship Detroit livery from Callie Graphics.
Thank you, I have not flown it yet I am having a problem with the number one engine not spooling up corectly. Thank you for the comment about the retracts and the nose bowl I didn't like the plastic nose it came with it didn't taper down correctly on the front. Good luck on your build
It would be great if you could slow down the video or do a retro-build thread on RC Groups, Scale Kit and Scratch Built forum . I would really like to see detail on your landing gear solution. You will also get advice on twin motor setup. Motors and speed controls must match, etc.
I was taught not to put the modelling pins through any load bearing structures such as spars and fuselage longerons, but rather one on each side of the part, so as not to weaken it by basically putting a hole through it. Is this now an old-fashioned view?
My flying abilities precludes me from building in balsa. If I did I would spend way more time building than flying. The funny thing is that I build free flight in balsa and they do fine. So what I guess that I am saying is that me as a pilot is actually worse than no pilot at all.
My club instructors have a mantra … ‘Fly it all the way to the runway Andy’ … sound advice regardless of buy/fly or build/fly … with far less risk of carnage 😂
The best way to discourage someone who wants to start building or improving his skills in building airplane models : Watching this silent accelerated video…
I've designed my own aircraft but unfortunately have no experience with them I am just fascinated with them and space. So for my first project can I use the wood he is using or shall I use another material?
For a first build I would recommend using foam board. Check out my Timber foam build on my channel. You can build the whole plane in a few days and it flys really good. Balsa Planes like this one cost a lot more and can take a long time to complete. Cheers
Thank you, I have a longer video I am working on but I haven't uploaded it yet because I wanted to add clips of it flying into it. I haven't flown it yet. The longer video has a lot more detail on how I built the retracts.
A scratch build vid! Fast becoming a lost skill in our hobby. Nothing like taking a box of wood and making your favorite model. Thanks for something besides foam or drone!
Thank you, Well if I need to get to the wing servos it will be a big project and will need to cut the cover so I just made it easy and glued them. The elevator and ruder servos are mounted in with screws.
I am interested in obtaining an excellent set of DC-3 drawings. I don’t want to fly the model, but rather hang it from my vaulted sunroom ceiling. Thank you!
His model building skills are miraculous; especially when there are ZERO sloppy glue joints.
Lol sloppy glue joints are the only thing I can make
NICE! Almost full build. Its very nice to still see men building instead of buying ready to fly models!
A very nice aircraft kit. Lots of work in it. Just don't crash it. Well done
My father would have loved to see this. He flew DC3'with the RAF during WW2 in the VIP section of Transport Command and he loved building scale model aircraft.
Wow!!! SKILLS + PATIENCE + LUV + FAITH!!!
RESPECT!!! IMPRESSIVE BUILD!!!

I just started again at 58...enjoyable
Just getting to the end of the piper j3 my 1st plane into retirement hoping to do a b17 if the piper flys ok
Started building them when I was 11. I’m 13 noe
Apparently Full Build = 80% complete now
with thumbnails covering the entire part we would like to see at the end. lol.
@A ship with Internet access I :v what is the fun in see the work and not the fucking final result
@A ship with Internet access Anybody who notices it cares
yeh the problem here is that WE DON'T get to see this beautiful model
@Hyper Ghidorah he was chill, you are being a dickhead you hypocrite

THANKYOU FOR NOT USING MUSIC!!!
Shouting to get your point across, i get it. BUT YOU CAN ALWAYS MUTE, IF THERE IS MUSIC!!!!!!
you have a volume knob lol. wtf
Oh how nice to see a built up plane. It brings back many good memories. You my friend are a true modeler.
So good 😊 👍🏻
Always admire these talented people with a tinge of envy
Love this build. Do you have any details on how you connected the undercarriage servos to the actual gear? could not catch it in the speedy video. Thanks
I miss the old rc plane woodworking classes I took when I was a little boy :(
Yes
would love to take classes like that, guess i was born in the wrong year : /
Wow,how those sweet retracts,Nice job!
I used to build with balsa, the only thing around in those days, and remember my first plane ,a thunderbolt, this build brought back memories. Thanks for the video.
Nice, I did a Thunderbolt too.

Beautiful build I caught a few trick s of the trade when building a model. Thank you.😊
Nice build, every detail on your plane so cool..
Beautiful work.
Nice and I rmember it well every kid on the block did that. Only we did not have the neat servos, glue, or Mylar. Only tissue paper and dope.
I mentioned building my p-40 kit to my brother yesterday and youtube recommends this today. Beautiful bird ya made!!

Nice build
I love balsa building and your doing a great job.
Nice job Troy
Very nice build, bring back real model building just like this.
Very nice 👍 💪
Wow 60”, impressive.
Years ago that all that I built.loved balsa wood kits
That was pretty cool! U should design your own plane. Something futuristic! That would be soooo cool!
NICE WORK...!!........i'm wondering if it's better those electric prop motors instead the piston ones....
Come on !!! It's beautiful when do we see the finished product. DC 3,and or Iliushyns are still flying in Venezuela.
That silver monocoat has me thinking about Zeppelin models
in recommended after 2 years
That is really cool! 😃
See...this guy is using his hands, he's building things. He's not like most young folk who do nothing but text. He's a credit to his generation.

For that plane a brushless 480 or power10 (Eflite, or other comparable motor with an 12x4 or 11x5.5 propeller would work with a 30 or 40amp ESC.
Can someone explain the microwave trick? Do you soak the wood strip for a certain amount of time and how long do you cook it?
Wow lts so cool 🙄🙄😁
What a b3autiful project. Love the retractable landing gear.
Thanks. I love the DC-3 or C-47. Perhaps the first modern airplane in terms of reliability and endurance, and grand-father to all modern airplanes. :-)
I have a tip for you , you can stick pins into a piece of thick foam so that it's easier to pick them up
Damn thats good. Thanks for the tip
@@Harry_Ballzonya no problem, space out pins at least a finger apart so its easier to take them out
Hello from Russia! This cool! Respect!
Wish I could build that fast. I'd probably glue my fingers together.
Love it nice retracts
Nice work
Awesome build and it's a favorite airplane of mine too!
I love balsa builds. I built 2 or 3 and enjoyed building them more then flying them. Back then there were only gas powered ones, may try an electric one at some point. Even thought about building one and not covering it and just us a model
Why stop before showing the 'fully built' DC 3? Did you drop it.., or just us?
I watched it fly today

I thought I was good putting together one of those rubber band balsa planes.
What kit was this. I’m in the middle of a spitfire build but this dc10 is awesome. I want to build this next. Kit name pleaseeee
