  • My name is Jim. I live in a small town in Illinois. I am sharing my story of how I retired in July 2024 at 55 years old. I worked shift work in an industrial plant for nearly 26 years. I offer no financial advice but want to use my channel to glorify The Lord and give hope and encouragement. Several TH-cam channels helped me prepare for retirement and I am hoping I can help you. I am just sharing my experiences, thoughts, and observations. Maybe you are closer to retirement than you think.
Oh, and I am also an outdoor cook so there will be some food and cooking videos too!

I think my worst one was probably doing maintenance in a sawmill.
There was no parking, it was filthy, management was a joke, and my coworkers left a lot to be desired. Fortunately I was only there for three months.

@@FailureatRetirement I’m thankful I was at the factory for only nine months 🙌

I started working at 14 at the local food store, which was behind my home. Worked in a copper smelting factory for one year after high school, while continuing to work part time at the food store. Then 1 year of full-time college, while working full-time at the food store. After this, worked at a large insurance company, in various clerical jobs for 35 years, while completing my undergraduate and masters degrees. Basically, I managed people and back office processes for much of my work life at the insurance company. With the exception of the first few years at the insurance company, when the "old guard" worked there and the company had a rich culture at that time, I can't honestly say I enjoyed most of my jobs there, and I had quite a few. In the 1990s, the "Wall Street" crowd moving into the executive positions and gutted the corporate culture. After this, my employment there was just a means-to-an-end, to get an income to support my family. The wizards-of-Wall-Street did make the company more profitable, and the wages improved substantially, but the company became a heartless place. At the age of 56, I gave my two weeks notice and retired from the company, and have never looked back.

It’s amazing how “corporate” changes most things for the worse.

@@jimrinard1969Yes. In my case, my company became soulless. When it switched from a "mutual" company, i.e. owned by the policyholders, to a stock based company, making money at all cost (legal but not necessarily moral) became the norm.

@@jimrinard1969 You have my respect for working a shift-work job for so many years. That's really very hard on one's physical and mental health. Our bodies are not made to work this way. A friend of mine worked in a similar fashion, for many years, and retired at the age of 62 to serious health problems, somewhat due to his job. I'm glad for you that you were able to retire early!
