- "The charges relate to the most extreme category… the images are very graphic in nature”.
Former BBC presenter Huw Edwards could face a potential prison sentence along with a significant fine if found guilty of making indecent pictures of children, says The Times’ media correspondent Alex Farber.

Children were harmed during the making of such images,a prison sentence is a must
when can we blame the muslims again
It is a must but it won’t happen
The BBC are a disgrace to broadcasting, journalism and humanity.
They tried to whitewash his disgusting behaviour with that young girl, and some of his colleagues like Jon Sopel defended him..Absolutely disgraceful.
@@gilllarr9285 for first offences with images, they very rarely send any offender to jail. They give a suspended sentence, put them on the register and give a sexual harm prevention order which, if broken, means jail. The reason they don't automatically send to jail is that experience over many years has shown that it often makes them worse. They mix with other offenders and come out of jail with all kinds of criminal knowledge they didn't have before.

What a FOOL! In a high profile, high paid job, he threw it all away. Forever disgraced. I pity his wife.
That's something that happens on to catch a predator all the time. Many of these guys have well paid jobs and careers and they throw it abd their future reputation and freedom away for what?
Is some short lived sexual gratification worth it? For them apparently so.
That's before you get into the obvious lack of morals, and selfishness of ruining a kids life

He can access his pension, which is probably worth a few millions
@TefiTheWaterGipsy agreed that he has to face criminal charges like any other person.
People will be asking why Huw was not only kept on full pay while suspended but received a 40k pay rise during that period! BBC employees sign a contract that includes a clause to not doing anything that brings the corporation into disrepute. They / we should be asking for the money back...
I just don't give them my money in the first place, in other words, I don't have a TV licence.
Because he knows to much
The BBC 'may' have a very different interpretation of 'disrepute' I feel. As for doing anything: apathy! Cancel the licence, yes, but most people fear the trouble that brings due to ignorance and conditioning, so they will continue to comply with their mild tuts and head shaking.
Just remember they tried to get Russell Brand arrested because he has more listeners than them.
But they defend an actual child abuser and keep paying him when probably well aware of what he's facing.
Not only that, there needs to be an investigation whether he was using equipment at work for his activities, and who were the people he was sharing this unspeakable filth with.
Wait for the 'mental health' claim.
It's actually insulting that so many people claim mental health problems for such vile behaviours and blatant violence.

It would survive, but it would cease to be a public service broadcaster, meaning it would not have still to adhere to the defining principles if public service broadcasting, it could broadcast whatever it wanted to whenever it wanted to, and it would have to start running adverts and using commercial sponsorship. It would also be able to start being obviously politically biased.

They always seem to play the mental health card to try and get out of going to prison send him down. I say if he’s proven guilty disgusting
I think anyone would be vulnerable to poor mental health if they got caught with illegal images.
Yep - disgusting that when the child sex scandal first broke, Huw Edwards was able to go off 'sick' with sudden, never-before-reported mental health issues, and check himself into an exclusive, private medical facility costing thousands of pounds per week - all paid for by his employer, ie the BBC license fee paying public.
He's not ill - he's a child sex predator who got caught! After he was named as the mystery BBC star paying a child for obscene videos and photos, many young, male colleagues at the BBC came forward to report that Edwards had sexually harassed them, with inappropriate, lecherous comments, propositions and emails.
That to this day the BBC has never even investigated the very serious allegations against Huw Edwards - many of which happened during working hours on BBC premises - least of all taken any action against him, is a total disgrace. He was allowed to resign with a huge pay-off, and a mega pension. Thank God he is finally being prosecuted, and will be fully exposed at trial as the sex predator and criminal he is. Obviously he will hire the best barrister money can buy, and fight tooth and nail to cling onto his privileged life.
But there's no hiding his guilt in these depraved crimes, which victimise and sexually exploit children. Huw Edwards has no excuse for his sex offending, and fully deserves jail time. But I have a horrible feeling he won't get it. It's a strange, warped contradiction in humanity, that we have an instinct to go easy on wrong-doers who have enjoyed the privileges of fame, money and power. There's some warped logic in people, that a celebrity like Edwards who for decades was a high status, highly respected public figure, is deserving of sympathy because he has a longer fall from grace than the average pervert on the street.
That is very twisted non-logic. In fact a man with Edwards' charmed life should be held to higher standards of behaviour and morality, precisely because of all his immense advantages. There is no excuse for child abuse by anyone, whatever their circumstances. But it's particularly heinous when a wealthy, powerful man like Edwards uses money and fame to get his perverted jollies from a vulnerable child.

What is the definition (in law) of *making* an indecent image? I just looked it up: The act of downloading or opening an image can be considered "making" an indecent image under UK law. Simply opening an attachment or downloading an image, even without knowing its contents, can fall under this definition. The AI I used (which could also be wrong) suggests there are two defences: "unwanted receipt" and "lack of awareness".
There’s more than likely a bunch of them who are high profile, as Huw’s friends would be of that level. We as tax payers and BBC to license fee payers have a right to know who else was in the WhatsApp group. As you said, no one sends and receives messages to themselves.

There are very valid reasons why they don't. In first time cases involving images and no contact with the kids, they rarely jail for the simple reason that putting them in jail often makes them twenty times worse. They come into contact in jail with other much worse offenders and come out more dangerous. *EDIT* some unusual features in the Huw Edwards case. It was said in court today that the WhatsApp chat records show he specifically said to the person he was messaging that he did not want illegal images, but the other person sent them anyway. It seems that in situations like that, the law says that the person who received the images must delete them within a "reasonable time" but doesn't say what reasonable is. This appears to be what happened in this case. Apparently it's becoming an increasing problem, particularly for people who are in group chats - someone will send an image that nobody asked for.
"Making" an image in this context means creating a copy of the image on your device usually by downloading, taking a screenshot or opening an attachment. "Making" does not mean you produced the original image yourself, or distributed it.
Why dont they use plain English then. To me 'making' means 'making' beleive it or not.
