I’m trying out this new format where I just share whatever ideas that are top of mind. This will not be in lieu of the lectures & interviews but hopefully a more casual medium where I can talk about ideas that more people might relate to. Please let me know in the comments what you think of this new format!

Hello Jonathon. I admire this candid honesty dude. This makes you more of a philosopher than sterile analysts, by all measures. Your describing evolving A.I. as a kind of "humbling" process for humanity also resonates deeply. It does feel that way, doesn't it? As if we're supposed to learn our limitations before we can transcend them. This feels deeply spiritual to me. Do you tend to agree, and if so, what do you think might be the purpose of such a humbling process?

great stuff brother. as a software dev, I felt the same dread when I first encountered gpt3 but then I had a similar realization that I identified too much with my profession and realized how truly lucky I was to enjoy what I do and that technical progress will help others also be fulfilled as I am. as intelligence/creativity become commoditized, authentic human experience will be more valuable than ever. keep moving and leave plenty of space for wonder!
side note: as a new subscriber, I love the videos but felt like they lacked that youtube-style human connection somewhat and often felt more like something I would see on TV-probably due to the superb aesthetics and professionalism of each video. I really welcome this new format as it feels more wholesome and less formal

Here's my take that is inspired after watching you. I think you'll still be relevant because existing philosophies and their philosophers were operating on paradigms which never changed until AI. It's like writing about courage because you never truly met anyone or anything that provoked real fear in you and you confuse it for courage. Similarly, the insecurities that will arise in AI era will be uniquely different and that will require people like you who have actual access to human interiority and is there to witness it. Plato, Socrates, Camus were not living in today's world. We are.

It's very interesting to see people from different backgrounds and their reaction to AI, so much of people's fears can be summed up as fear of being replaced and financial struggle.
Most of my fears with AI stem from its ability to affect how people traditionally reason. An example would be traditionally, I see the footage of my neighbour committing a crime on security camera, I can reasonably assume he is guilty. With developments from AI I see his face, hear his voice, watch his every action... but the entire video could have been fabricated and completely indistinguishable from the real thing.
AI presents for me, an uncanny valley type feeling, especially with how many AI influenced videos I witness on social media. How much of my human experience can be freely reconstructed and manipulated by a machine? How can I be aware that what I'm seeing is the truth of the matter, or a finely constructed illusion to deceive me?
AI is a very useful tool, and we should do our best to adapt and refine its usage if it is destined to continue to make waves. However, I do believe AI will forever change human reasoning and our social experiences, especially online, to a level no one will be able to predict.

I've thought a lot about this as well and two things come to mind, one is that coming up with novel and useful things will likely be done solely by A.I, if you look at ultimately novel and useful things. Perhaps humans can come up with novel and useful things for other humans but only due to ignorance of AI's products. So being a creative will in some sense diminish I think. Second thing is that if you ask an ASI to come up with a deeply fulfilling life for one self given the contraints of your station in life and individual psychology, my bet is that it will come up with something. So while fulfillment in the future might not be the same clothes I wear today, at least I'm not going to be naked.

Some of the easiest content to connect to is where someone has a general point to the video, but also just talks about their thoughts and interactions in their life without it needing to be super pointed or methodical. All content you’ve made has been good so far but don’t worry about being too formulaic on less structured videos like this. All that being said i really enjoyed hearing your thoughts

@@futuristudiosYes, that's correct. It's a paradox I wanted to address, albeit with a touch of sarcasm. I think it's fair to compare TH-cam to a new form of writing-just a different medium for broadcasting ideas. I've also been reflecting on the notion of "output." It seems that output aimed at helping others tends to have greater longevity than output created solely for oneself. As AI takes on more tasks, critical decision-making feels increasingly tied to achieving the outcomes we seek, both individually and collectively. That said, I’m not convinced the New York Times is obsolete for most people just yet.

When you break it down to it's essence - It's an identity crises we are having. Where dependance and competition are no longer needed. Its more a coming together from a me -world to a we-world. But that can be scary and challenging, however no matte what it is, the rewards are more than worth it. AI is a tool of self empowerment, allowing exploration, discovering and transformation of life as we know it. Literally all life as we know it - pretty wild (and awesome) future we all have ahead of us.

After writing something that first had a rough draft, input the rough draft into one of these A.I and ask it to rewrite it in the style of Anton Chekhov and weep when looking upon it compared to what you have wrote. Learn from this humbling experience and improve from it. Also General George S Patton's writing style when used for this same purpose really inspires to get things done and helps to cut out un needed words. Also walking is the best thing for creativity and for thinking and should be known as the cure for idleness in mind as well as body.

strongly agree with the idea that we humans need to elevate our capacity for being truly human. Personality, as you mentioned, will play a significant role in this evolution. Alongside personality, I believe emotion is equally important. In both areas, we must strive to become more aware of and in control of these aspects of ourselves. If we think of personality and emotion as instruments that we can learn to master, the future may demand a deliberate effort to develop a pedagogy around understanding them deeply and achieving fluency in ‘playing’ them.

This is one reason for my shifting interest in philosophy from engineering, illustration, making money, etc. I think human interests in general will shift to more intrinsic ones if 'being useful to others' becomes impossible for human beings because of AI. And now, I'm curious about your life plan if your job as a philosopher were completely replaced by AI in, say, 10 years. What will you do for a living? CharGPT has been great at generating ideas... plot alternatives, or a list of possible place names that are interesting and relevant. I still need to curate those ideas into something compelling that communicates what *I* want to communicate. No fear.

When i read the title i tought that it will be saying that ai cant get good enough to replace him or his job and how ai would just be another tool (copium)
A lot of that type of videos are being uploaded in youtube laitly

What you are hinting at is something that will impact all fields and ways of life. If logic is no longer special, then the subjective and personality will reign. It never was about the accumulation of knowledge for its own sake. The will to power will always find a way.

To your point about rewriting your synapses, I think there might be a better way of just adding to your brain, through something like Neurolink. With an advanced AI I think it might be possible to simulate a brain digitally and make a link to an external device that would work as an extension and have he same OS as our brain so to speak. So basically it will work as an extension of your memory and that's how you could upload information. I think digital memory also will have to be converted by an AI to something different, because we obviously don't just have ZIP files in our brain or TXT or MP3 or whatever.
It may be so much easier than we think, we just don't think about it the right way. It's like, if you wanted to travel 100km/hour a few centuries ago, you would think, how do I make my horse run so fast? I guess we just can't predict anything in the era of digital intelligence.

I don’t fear AI because knowing what humans are, that we are thinking beings, AI will be the only cognitive competitor we have, excluding ETs. What does this mean? It means we will necessarily evolve. It may happen extremely rapidly. I’m looking forward to being upgraded.

Some thoughts I had while watching this:
This whole AI thing is basically what Nietzsche "predicted" in the Genealogy when he began, as you did in the video, to tell the story of science - and how it made people think of themselves not as divine but as miserable - with Copernicus.
But I have to disagree with your (is it really?) point: Wise men write books, but if what they conceive is truly genius - who will listen to them? A select few readers in the future.
Also, this general reaction (and yours) to artificial intelligence shows quite well how today's society limits the natural drive of human beings. You just can't make a living from philosophy.
That was quite inspiring! (Walking and philosophy is certainly a good combination)

At this point im just tired of being pessimistic. I understand people who might struggle financially if they go out of a job, but for me seeing stuff get automated just makes me think we have more options to play with. I feel like a certain section of the population is at no real risk and are just complaining because its the current way to express class and intelligence, how dramatic and poetic can you make your tweet about the fall of civilisation or the evils of capitalism or whatnot.

Ask your self this, would you be a philosopher if it meant living a life of poverty?
You walk around with nice clothes, well groomed in a nice area in a big city, would you swap that for a life of poverty?

Certainly the walk could take that direction. Not forever perhaps (who has time?). But certainly a month long walk with nothing but the clothes on one's back would be illuminating for viewer and protagonist both ✨🎩🥂

I think the wow factor of AI will wear off and people will begin to crave organic and authentic resources for the sake of its origin as opposed to what is fastest or even “better” content-wise. Knowledge is such a small part of what makes a human what it is. The spiritual/social/emotional aspect will never not be the most important focus. With that said… I’ll always support you and your work no matter what, because you’re you and nobody can replace that 🙏

I wonder if AI personal assistants might help society by informing their user when they are likely being tricked or manipulated by analysing the info they consume (maybe they could look at personal communications too but that could be a tricky area!). A smarter than human AI who looks out for the little guy might be too much to hope for, especially given the cast of characters developing this tech.

Most people today treat pretty much everything they do as a form of production or achievement, even sleeping is done "in order to" be more productive, enjoying the week-end is done "in order to" be ready for work on Monday and achieve more, everything is done "in order to". Maybe that's why AI is so scary, because it will force us to rethink our way of living, and our purpose, we'll have to do things as purely atelic activities, not even for cultivation. What's the point of learning how to draw if AI can draw better than you, and consequently anybody can draw better than you?
The Universe never made us purposeful, or even valuable, we just happened, and then we invented purpose with our own brain. And AI is showing us just that, at the scale of the universe, we are useless.
Maybe AI will also push us back to a more analog life, giving more value to anything that is not digital because the skills will be shown there and it's a bastion still hard to reach for an AI. But even this bastion will fall at some point. I think human will merge entirely with the machines at some point, we have already delegated part of our memory to our phones and most people are completely lost without them.

It's normal to feel fear, brotha! Especially to something like AI.
One things for certain, like the internet was born and made free to all, now the internet has been provided with a different way to interact with us.
As you mentioned regarding "productization," ...... no matter what, there will be a mainstream crowd and a non mainstream that will and won't advertise:
"AI can pleasure me. AI can fill my every need." Etc. Etc.
But a philosopher? As I read in one of the comments, knowing the intracacies and delicacies of the interior of a human is and will always be separate from the human to a robot.
If we were to put a cold robot vs. a man in a marathon of life and told them both their purpose was to live 100 years and discover whatever they can about life,
At the very end of the day, the robot will not make it to heaven or hell, to see God or not to see, to understand the depth of feelings, compassion, love, or why hatred of onself or for others is even a thing...
Ask yourself, who would you rather sit and philosophize with at the 100-year marker?
Someone once told me, "It won't have power over you unless YOU let it." (Referring to a whole different topic and lesson yet, sounded relevant)
This format was wonderful, happy holidays, hermano.

Not to mention, AI can only come up with stuff that it's trained on from the internet and from people who created that knowledge, etc.
While you or I, on the other hand, can come up with NEW, Very New and Unheard of criteria.

Just some decades ago we didn't have any computing. And now computers do trillions of calculations per second. It's probable that the same thing will happen to human level thinking. When computers produce so much intelligence, the whole humanity quickly becomes invisible. No one will ever hear an intelligent thought of a human being, because it's so minuscule, just like compared to what a human can calculate compared to a computer. I think it's fascinating. Also very likely the near future.
