    I grew "peppermint stick" celery form seed a few years ago, let one plant flower (bee food!) and go to seed and now I have self-seeded celery growing everywhere, including in my lawn with no care whatsoever. 😄

    Thank you, I've never seen anyone explain growing celery before other than an old neighbour who grew it in a trench. He grew so much we used to find bundles of it and other veg left on our door step an least once a week for years !! With no garden to speak of this year my wife has planted a celery stump which has taken root very well, it was just a super market variety so it will be interesting to see how it develops !

      @@GrowVeg Yes he was and thankfully lived to a ripe old age too! I suppose as a result of good genes and good grub ! He barely ever left the village his whole life ! One gardening tip he gave me was how he fed all of his plants, at the start of the season he would go to a nearby farming friend and collect a hessian bag full of sheeps manure which he tied to a brick and dropped into a water butt. This water he used all year, his garden certainly thanked him for it !!

    Growing celery in Canada. I've only had success with the Utah Tall variety, so I've been sticking with that variety. We start indoors in March, and put them in the greenhouse in May. Water daily and twice a day on hot days. We eat some fresh, and dry them for use all winter. Only last year we didn't get any, because my elderly mom came to help weed, and pulled them all out! :)

It grew into a 4 foot tall plant and eventually flowered. Wasn't sure if I was doing the right thing so didn't eat any. Unfortunately my husband crushed it while making a fence but I might try it again next year.

    yes, a cruel to pit this out now! February would have been great help. With all the new victory gardens, I didn't get celery because it was sold out. I have grown it every year otherwise. Water is so important as with lower water the celery flavor is very strong. My mistake the first year. I will try to propagate the plants from celery roots but they are delicate since most of the root is cut off in the store. Good luck everyone!

Not only it performed very well under grim UK weather (we had not very many sunny summer days, mostly foggy and cold-ish), but also continued to produce juicy stalks throughout the winter in non-heated greenhouse and next year as well. I don't have a garden but am growing celery in one of my window boxes, which I "regrew" in water. I decided to have a look on youtube to find out why my stems were so thin, and also how to prevent the plant from bolting (I knew about that from a prior experience with a single turnip...) the leaves themselves are delicious and we have used them to flavour soups and in salads, but no real stems to speak of. today was the first time I heard of "blanching" (well except for cooking veg) so I assume that's the reason, and will have to give it a try.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Proper stems for cooking are best from plants grown from seed. You can re-sprout the base of harvested celery, but you'll only really get leafy growth and very thin, spindly stems - though they're still great for adding celery flavour to dishes.

    • @esther_margolis
      @esther_margolis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      actually - I followed something I saw online, and enclosed the plant in a few layers of cardboard. 3 weeks later - I have great stems. however my daughter said she preferred the leaves - why did I do it :)

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Romin. Unfortunately you can't just regrow celery from the stalk of another celery plant. Well you can, but you'll only get bushy, predominantly leafy growth - but unlikely any usable stalks. You're best growing it from seed. That doesn't mean to say the leaves are useable - you could still use them to flavour soups etc.

    First year growing celery and the Mrs. chose a pink variety. I had no idea how to grow it. Planted about 6" apart in a raised bed and just let it grow as it will. Poor watering habits and no training or trenching. We ended up with shrubs about 4" diameter at the base and around 100 stalks none bigger around than a pencil and mostly fibrous ribs with little flavor.
    Now she wants to know what we did wrong. so she can grow it better next year. I knew Ben would have a video. Now I know they need to be trained or trenched much like leeks. And they require a stead supply of water. This is one that if she wants to grow we need to put in that drip irrigation system on a timer.

    My project for 2023 is to grow my own celery. I never thought that I would see the day that I had to plant celery. It was always a sensible choice at the market to buy. Now prices have skyrocketed and the quality of produce has waned. Celery just does not last in the crisper at all anymore.
    I am sensing these days that people are going to have to dive into gardening in order to survive. Not live but to survive. I am by no means a doomsday purveyor but the writing on the wall is clear to me.
    Don't get me wrong, at times there are some "deals" available. My Dad has offered to split the 5 kilo bags of turnips, beets and 10 kilo bags of potatoes and carrots with us. Assessing the situation it seems like a savings but still it is quite costly. There may still be a large amount of waste with that cost savings.

      Digging around on the internet it seems this variety does not require blanching - just plant it out, no trenching required. Do keep it well watered and perhaps mulch around plants to keep the roots cool.

      It could be the variety. But also it could be that it was a bit on the dry side. Especially growing in a container, celery would need watering really very often, as it loves the soil incredibly moist.

    Am growing celery in my greenhouse. Seeds are so tiny that it was recommended to sprinkle them ON TOP OF soil and water gently and often. I have found they absolutely love wet feet and so I give them water daily. They seem to love growing with/next to broccoli so that keeps the celery happy. No harvest yet, but now that i see one can harvest celery ribs one at a time that’s a great tip I had not heard of previously! Thank you!

    Totally confused because when I read the directions on packet and read or see a video there are way too many variables.
    Cover-don’t cover; light-diffused light; warmer during day-cooler at night. Seriously I’ve seen them all.
    Which is correct? I just planted today and I lightly covered and have done on with heat mat.
    Last year I winter sowed in jug and they germinated fine, but my growing season is 135 days and thought it would be better to start early and see if stalks grow thicker.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually start them a little later. They do need warmth to germinate - that helps a lot. I would cover them with just the slightest amount of potting mix, as you have done. That is what I did and they grew just fine.

    Can you please explain the difference between self blanching and trenching..? Is it a difference in growing or a different type of celery?

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are different types of celery, grown in different ways. The self-blanching types can be left to do their thing. The trenching types won't produce tender, crisp stems unless they are actively earthed up.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure if you can tell without the package. Most modern varieties sold are self-blanching though, but if in doubt, you could just assume they need blanching, as I don't think this will do any harm to self-blanching types.

    I've grown 'cutting celery' from seed in pots on my windowsill. It seems to be taking forever to grow to a decent size for picking (3 months so far) Shall I wait or cut back any leaves to encourage stalk growth?? Thanks 😊

    • @GrowVeg

      I reckon you could harvest some of the leaves by now, but leave plenty to grow on. Cutting celery tends to produce more leafy growth, rather than 'proper' stalks you'd associate with traditional celery.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could grow celery in a pot, but you'd need to keep it really well watered. Store-bought celery does re-sprout from the base, but you get thin and straggly stems. It's fine for getting more leafy growth to add celery flavour to soups etc., but it's not a great way to grow 'proper' celery - stick to growing from seed.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure, because you may already be growing a self-blanching varieties. If the stems are good, straight and firm then you shouldn't really have to blanch. I wouldn't try it at this stage, but just crack/pull of stems as and when to check and use them.
