That’s so cool to hear. I’m 52 and only just discovering the joy of growing my own veggies. I wish I had of started at 12 . Imagine how much I’d know by now lol.
I grew "peppermint stick" celery form seed a few years ago, let one plant flower (bee food!) and go to seed and now I have self-seeded celery growing everywhere, including in my lawn with no care whatsoever. 😄
Me too. I saw it at the garden nursery when I only went in 'for a couple things' and had to grab a tray bc they looked so lush lol can always find room!
There’s something about your catchy music and your high energy for gardening that really makes my day when I watch you. I think I can accept the celery challenge and win this 2024. No luck in the past, Thanks friend. Happy Gardening, Carry on and grow! ❤
Am growing celery in my greenhouse. Seeds are so tiny that it was recommended to sprinkle them ON TOP OF soil and water gently and often. I have found they absolutely love wet feet and so I give them water daily. They seem to love growing with/next to broccoli so that keeps the celery happy. No harvest yet, but now that i see one can harvest celery ribs one at a time that’s a great tip I had not heard of previously! Thank you!
Thank you, I've never seen anyone explain growing celery before other than an old neighbour who grew it in a trench. He grew so much we used to find bundles of it and other veg left on our door step an least once a week for years !! With no garden to speak of this year my wife has planted a celery stump which has taken root very well, it was just a super market variety so it will be interesting to see how it develops !
@@GrowVeg Yes he was and thankfully lived to a ripe old age too! I suppose as a result of good genes and good grub ! He barely ever left the village his whole life ! One gardening tip he gave me was how he fed all of his plants, at the start of the season he would go to a nearby farming friend and collect a hessian bag full of sheeps manure which he tied to a brick and dropped into a water butt. This water he used all year, his garden certainly thanked him for it !!
Growing celery in Canada. I've only had success with the Utah Tall variety, so I've been sticking with that variety. We start indoors in March, and put them in the greenhouse in May. Water daily and twice a day on hot days. We eat some fresh, and dry them for use all winter. Only last year we didn't get any, because my elderly mom came to help weed, and pulled them all out! :)
Thanks for this. Just started doing the beer bait for slugs. Caught a huge tiger slug and 2 smaller slugs. My chooks really enjoyed the marinated treat when I had to dispose of the dead ones. I’m sure my eggs are going to taste even better now too ha ha
I've grown celery for several years in an artificial bog. Used a rubber pond liner to make a bed about 3 by 4 ft. This video will help me in future plantings.
I'm growing Utah Tall celery next year. Glad I searched and found your video. Now to find out if this type of celery is self blanching ot needs to be trenches. Thank you so much for showing us how to grow our own food.
I'm a beginner, in Australia, growing celery in a glass of water and starting to think when and where to plant it in soil. Thanks for an informative and engaging video!
I regrew celery and other veg a few times that way, in water. but some of them died when I moved them to earth. my neighbour says the roots they had were "water roots" (not sure that is the right english word, but it is what she said) I tried a few more times and one of them "took" and has grown into a tremendous plant in a window box.
Thank you so much! you answered all my questions that I didn’t find in the other celery videos. Plus you did it with such enthusiasm and quickly. Keep doing what you’re doing❤️🌱🌻
Great video as always! It's my first year with a veg plot and decided to grow the Loretta variety. I hadn't realised how patient I had to be for the seeds to germinate, so I sowed some more! Now I am inundated so it's a good job I like it! 😁
This is the first year I we were able to grow celery! This time we tried growing it from the stump of celery from the local grocery store, but I'm afraid it might not yield as much because it's so late in the year.. but either way I was so happy to see growth!
I was thinking about trying celery this next year. I have to do my "gardening" in containers, so I will probably be doing my bottom watering system. I'm hoping to TRY to grow all the veggies for being able to make beef stew, getting ONLY the beef from the store, but everything else from my driveway! Fun plan, just hope I can pull it off!!! 🤞🤞
Celery keeps on giving also! It's now a permanent resident in our garden! I really like the taste of "tango" celery but am also trying "utah" this year but am trying from seed. 1st time, wish me Blessings not luck. Blessings and namaste family 🙏 😇 ❤️ 💪 🌎 ✌️
yes, a cruel to pit this out now! February would have been great help. With all the new victory gardens, I didn't get celery because it was sold out. I have grown it every year otherwise. Water is so important as with lower water the celery flavor is very strong. My mistake the first year. I will try to propagate the plants from celery roots but they are delicate since most of the root is cut off in the store. Good luck everyone!
This year I planted a celery was all greens and froze in batches for soup…super tasty. I know this video was 4 years ago but still relevant…I’m already planning for next years garden 😂
I am growing a pink celery. Now that I have seen your very informative presentation I need to check if they are self blanching or will need hilling up!! Excellent stuff. Thank you!!
Thanks, Ben! I just planted some celery, propagated from a grocery store head. It's doing well so far. I'll definitely incorporate your suggestions in growing it. Love all your videos.
I am Amazed with how well my celery is growing. Sowed the seeds back in late August 2019 (i'm in VIC AUS) and they are still going strong with none of them having bolted in the colder weather.
Thanks for this. I’m growing celery for the first time between a few short rows of corn. They get great shade at mid day, but I know there’s a lot of competition for moisture.
I tried planting celery stalk from a left over one from the supermarket. I planted it in a deep pot and watered well, sunny spot but against a wall. It grew into a 4 foot tall plant and eventually flowered. Wasn't sure if I was doing the right thing so didn't eat any. Unfortunately my husband crushed it while making a fence but I might try it again next year.
Did not know about the self blanching variety so will sow some next Spring. Looking forward this year to seeing how my celeriac develops after watching your celeriac video. Thank you.
I tried celery from seeds last year and got nothing...I was doing it wrong. Saved me again Ben, I'm going to try the rest of my seeds. I need celery as a 'free' ingredient in many of my canning recipes.
Very timely video! Thank you! Just planted out a second batch of bought celery plantlets in my garden in the hills of the Algarve. Hope the summer heat won't be too much for them....thankfully water not a problem.
first time growing celery! germinating in Argentina. And it is winter time! we have pretty mild winters. Thanks for all the useful information! I love your videos and started a planner.
I think I’ve the perfect spot to grow celery as my plot has 3 natural springs running through it. The previous holder planted yellow flag irises which I’ve now dug up and it is in this spot where I’ll be planting.
My sister told me she planted celery from a grocery store stalk and it grew. I put two stalks in my garden bed a few weeks ago and I'm seeing some leaves. This is my first time attempting to grow celery, can't wait to see if it is successful. Thanks for the tips! I didn't realize it needed lots of moisture. Thankfully we have had lots of rain.
@@blixxyn I did not get any celery from planting the stalk, could be user error. Trying from seed grown inside and just planted out a few days ago. Hopefully I will get growth this year.
We found one particular variety of celery called Victoria. Not only it performed very well under grim UK weather (we had not very many sunny summer days, mostly foggy and cold-ish), but also continued to produce juicy stalks throughout the winter in non-heated greenhouse and next year as well. Sadly, I cannot find seeds anymore and it was not a heirloom but F1.
First year having any luck growing celery - bought plants at the nursery. Tried growing them from bases of celery bought at the grocery store. They started well and then rotted after being placed in soil. I have some in the garden & some in pots - hoping I'll be able to keep these going over the winter.
I have two super healthy looking plants that I grew from celery tops sprouted on the kitchen window sill :) Pleased to hear I can cut the stems as I need them rather than the whole plant :)
Tango celery, an open pollinated variety, and cutting celery, plus I'm trying Mars root celery or celeriac. Thank you for the excellent synopsis of growing celery, I will be heeding your advice on cool weather protection, growing in rich peaty soil, and plenty of water 💦 🌱🌼.
thanks for info.. tried celery last year, didn't have success... watched your video and going to give it a try again this year with starter plants.. here we go lol
Another great video, Ben. While we are half a world apart seasonally - it's 32 here in Johannesburg today - a quick seasonal mental adjustment and we're good to go planting wise. Celery will definitely be on the 'menu' this year.
A good and timely vid. Thanks. Good value as always. Not all my celery in modules made it but I have been able to set out two short rows and some extras. After this naughty UK midlands heatwave, the reminder to keep moist is well taken. Enjoy and learn from your vids and enjoy the Dig for Victory Forum - two winners. Paul
Yes we are going to grow celery now indoor in Sweden. Thans for a god video. We are testing Mars, Giant Prague, Tall Utah52-70 and Golden Self Blanching 2.
I love wild Celery. Cheers from Japan 🇯🇵 I go looking for young plants to grow. It tastes alot different than the ones you get from the store more bitter but its great in the winter for soups and fish dishes.
I wild tossed seed this year, because it seemed like the right time to use it. will let you know if and when it sprouts. or of the chickens grt to it first
Thanks so much for this video, my celery has been slow growing and with your tips and optimism I feel more confident that we will get there, onwards and upwards, immense gratitude. I look forward to watching more from you!

Yes I am trying again wanted to grow it with other things to keep in the moisture - but ran out of space! So in a hot spot lots of green manure hoping to plant vetch soon in the same bed; hoping it will come up in the heat!
My first year growing celery, Im trying for 6 Utah Tall Celery. I started them in a grow tent directly under the light in a progogator tub that I put about 1/2 of warm water in every other day. I think I am seeing one starting to sprout so Im getting excited. Thanks for the tips.
This is my second year growing Tall Utah celery in Zone 8b (Seattle). Although I start it indoors and plant out fairly early, it isn't usually ready until fall but it overwinters great and is wonderful for winter soups and stews! Thanks for the very helpful video.
@@GrowVeg Do you have any smart ways to use up the greens (besides stock)? We don't have chickens and I feel bad composting so much but maybe I shouldn't.
Excellent presentation. Liked very much. I wanted to know, why my celery plant that I've grown from organic store bought stalk base, is getting very wide and bushy; but, not growing into tall stalks as the ones I see in the stores? Thanks for sharing.
Hi Romin. Unfortunately you can't just regrow celery from the stalk of another celery plant. Well you can, but you'll only get bushy, predominantly leafy growth - but unlikely any usable stalks. You're best growing it from seed. That doesn't mean to say the leaves are useable - you could still use them to flavour soups etc.
I don't have a garden but am growing celery in one of my window boxes, which I "regrew" in water. I decided to have a look on youtube to find out why my stems were so thin, and also how to prevent the plant from bolting (I knew about that from a prior experience with a single turnip...) the leaves themselves are delicious and we have used them to flavour soups and in salads, but no real stems to speak of. today was the first time I heard of "blanching" (well except for cooking veg) so I assume that's the reason, and will have to give it a try.
Proper stems for cooking are best from plants grown from seed. You can re-sprout the base of harvested celery, but you'll only really get leafy growth and very thin, spindly stems - though they're still great for adding celery flavour to dishes.
actually - I followed something I saw online, and enclosed the plant in a few layers of cardboard. 3 weeks later - I have great stems. however my daughter said she preferred the leaves - why did I do it :)
Great tips :) I didn't know wild celery grows in boggy soil, that explains their need for such a constant soil moisture. I'm trying the chinese pink celery this year, but I have to admit I've been neglecting it quite a bit and it's not looking too hot at the moment.
My celery has just developed its first adult leaves after popping its head out of the seed starter mix!!! Hope it will like the shady spot I have planned for it...
As always, THANK YOU! I grow Apium graveolens which does not produce stalks, it grows like parsley but taste like celery. I love it. Request - when you produce these fantastic videos, could you include how to collect and store the seeds for the produce you highlight. I think we should be as self sufficient as possible and this next step would be quite valuable.
First year growing celery and the Mrs. chose a pink variety. I had no idea how to grow it. Planted about 6" apart in a raised bed and just let it grow as it will. Poor watering habits and no training or trenching. We ended up with shrubs about 4" diameter at the base and around 100 stalks none bigger around than a pencil and mostly fibrous ribs with little flavor. Now she wants to know what we did wrong. so she can grow it better next year. I knew Ben would have a video. Now I know they need to be trained or trenched much like leeks. And they require a stead supply of water. This is one that if she wants to grow we need to put in that drip irrigation system on a timer.
Great informative video on celeey! I tried growing it last year and had so/so success. After watching this video I definitely see what I did wrong, so much appreciated! Unfortunately I was to late getting seeds started this year, but I'll be ready for next year's crop! Thanks!!
I started a tiny herb garden for my "mum", its actually for myself😂 she has rosemary, thyme, oregano, basil, mint and lemongrass. Today I sowed celery (wrong so need to resow) jalapeño and chives.
How about growing them in pots? I really love your videos. I would think it lovely if your videos included things going to seed so we can plant again next year.
Hi Patricia. You could grow them in containers but they would need a lot of watering, to keep conditions really moist. Do search for our videos on seed saving, which show how t save your own seeds for next season.
I have grown celery this season it is healthy and plenty of top growth but the stems need to be 2-3 times thicker. Grown in bed with plastic beneath to keep soil moist. Last season celery was fine grown in an open bed
Great comprehensive video…thanks…am definitely growing celery for the 2nd year….this heat wave is a challenge. What say you about pruning back the smaller celery stalks to encourage fewer big ones?
I'm not convinced cutting back the smaller stalks will have much of an effect. So long as the ground conditions are good, you'll get good, usable stalks.
Perfect timing! My celery is growing quite nice! However the heat is really getting to them here in California! Lol Oh yeah! Cheers on da beers my brotha!
I'd be lying if I said I never got caught in a beer trap myself.
Haha - a common mishap for me too!

Hope you manage to get a good crop. :-)
I am following too. It's my first time as well tp plant celery. I like this channel.
So pleased you found the channel - welcome! :-)
My first year growing celery, Im trying for 6 Utah Tall Celery. I started them in a grow tent directly under the light in a progogator tub that I put about 1/2 of warm water in every other day. I think I am seeing one starting to sprout so Im getting excited. Thanks for the tips.
that was supposed to say 1/2 an inch of water every other day. I think I see one starting to germinate
Great idea. Hope they're all germinating nicely for you now.
This is my second year growing Tall Utah celery in Zone 8b (Seattle). Although I start it indoors and plant out fairly early, it isn't usually ready until fall but it overwinters great and is wonderful for winter soups and stews! Thanks for the very helpful video.
Seattle has a good mild maritime climate that usually sees celery overwinter - very similar to my part of the world.
@@GrowVeg Do you have any smart ways to use up the greens (besides stock)? We don't have chickens and I feel bad composting so much but maybe I shouldn't.
@@sarakathleenh hey I make celery powder with it great for stocks. Hope this helps.
I tried growing the same celery with zero success. After watching a few videos I’ve learned what I did wrong and I’m eager to try again.
Thanks Vicki. Do check out our videos on seed saving. Celery seed would be saved and processed in much the same way as carrot seed.
I think lots of watering is the key Mark. Hope next season's crop is better.
Great informative video on celeey! I tried growing it last year and had so/so success. After watching this video I definitely see what I did wrong, so much appreciated! Unfortunately I was to late getting seeds started this year, but I'll be ready for next year's crop! Thanks!!
Great stuff! Thanks for make the video! Greetings from Ireland :D
Thanks for watching!
Brilliant video - as always, really informative. This is my first year growing celery and I'm amazed how easy it has been. All the best. Mags 🌸
Thanks Mags.
Mine are doing good but a few are flowering. Can i still harvest? Thanks....
You can harvest, yes, but expect the quality of the stems to begin deteriorating. But use them while they're still okay.
I started a tiny herb garden for my "mum", its actually for myself😂 she has rosemary, thyme, oregano, basil, mint and lemongrass. Today I sowed celery (wrong so need to resow) jalapeño and chives.
I'm sure your mum appreciates it too though!
Hope the stems thicken up in due course. :-)
Lol
Oh yeah! Cheers on da beers my brotha!
Cheers!
Great Video, I am going to grow some free red celery seeds(kitchen garden mag) this year. I hope the variety is just as good as what you are sowing.
Hope it turns out well for you. :-)
@@GrowVeg thank you.
