    So. Here's a few questions from the clueless. The engine from Canada in New Mexico. Is the engineer from Canada? Engineer a staff member with BNSF? Why is a Canadian Pacific engine all the way down in New Mexico? Kind of a distance from home you'd think. Interesting to see a NS with UP or CSX with BNSF etc. How does that work? Has anyone see a BNSF or UP engine etc. in Canada?

      They lease power to other railroad companies. I've seen a couple FXE units all the way up in Pittsburgh.

    • @mattjones366
      @mattjones366 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      US locos appear in Canada all the time, easy to find with a Google search.
      Can be leased because one railroad has a temporary shortage, another railroad has a temporary surplus. Or horsepower balancing for trains that run through 2 or more railroads without engine changes.

    • @railscenes4959
      @railscenes4959 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well after seeing the 28 locos in a single power train move eastbound on the BNSF in Illinois in this same excellent video, I’d guess the CP unit was a random pool loco that went astray in a terminal where that loco was the only option to put enough HP on a train. Many times decisions for power are made in FW, TX. Then they record the miles/hours run and accumulate that against BNSF power used on the CP (or what ever road) so it compares to a lend lease agreements between most RRs in N. America including NdeM in Mexico. It makes the entire rail system more fluid.
      Let’s take a guess that westbound train came out of Chicago with the CP leading. The CP unit could have been trailing on an inbound train to a interchange IMF yard SW of Joliet, IL called LPC Chicago. I last worked there in 2005. Power was very random. The goal was to move those double stack trains as efficiently as possible. At the same time Chicago area BNSF is way short of power. So use what you have and pay CP later w/BNSF power or Canadian $$$$.
      Now your ? about Canadian engineer running thru Belen, NM: not likely! Most North American rail lines require training and student trips, plus unions have established districts and divisions based on their RR crew change terminals. Been that way for over 100 years on most RRs.
      Also most loco controls have been standardized so any well trained engineer can recognize them even if labeled in French, Spanish or Canadian🤪.
