NL you have a bunch of poison cards. Why are you in such a rush to kill the spikes? Let them stack more thorns who cares. They never attack for any significant damage. Just pass until you draw poision and let that kill them.
@MrTohawk there was at least one turn where he had a defend in his hand that could have blocked a spike, which would have let him make an attack, or even get a kill, while still taking no damage and without ruining Orichalcum. But he didn't use it. I think he just doesn't realize that block affects spike damage.
Yeah what's the point of blocking damage instead of attacking nonstop when you have a poison build? It's not like the enemies will die on their own if you play passive... oh wait.
"It was jacked from the start" My dude you had an amazing setup to do crazy energy things and you drafted shiv and discard garbage don't blame Choker. oh god using the fire potion on the thorny dude when he could kill the guy hitting him for 20
Mike C Because he wasn’t, NL had a little bit of everything in his deck this go around. Not that it is any different from previous episodes thus far. He needs to stick to a theme much harder and stop over picking “strike upgrades”. This is also why he rarely has enough defense.
@Human Uncertainty if he sees a really good card for his build, and a card that really covers his current weakness, he will ponder the pros and cons of both cards for a while then spontaneously grab the third ransom terrible card without question. It makes me scream at my screen every time.
"We don't need good instincts" - Seems to be the guiding principle of the series. "We need as many question marks and bonfires as possible" - Should be the actual guiding principle.
Taking cards isn't as big of a deal as you guys make it seem to be As usual with any game NL plays, I find it extremely likely that at least half of the commenters have never even touched the game themselves, and they just repeat what others are saying without it being necessarily correct. I almost never skip a card, unless the three choices are all just flat out bad or don't fit into the deck. I win almost all of my runs, and I always have 25+ cards. Sometimes way more. The issue with NL is that he takes almost strictly only attack/utility cards, but no blocks. And then he dies, just like in this episode where he drew no blocks.
Ahhhhh NL, not using your exhaust potions when you couldv'e negated 4 damage even tho they are literally the WORST potions in the game. Oh yeah, sure, forget you have Orecalesum and don't realize that if you used those potions, AND let the exploder attack you, you COULD HAVE LIVED
Misplay 20:00 NL has what can be described as a poison heavy deck, instead he chooses to take 14 dmg to the chin from thorn boys. He is later 9 hp short of surviving exploder dudes.
Its actually idiotic to attack the thorn enemies instead of just waiting to draw your poison cards. You have multiple deadly poisons and bouncing flasks and you hit them with a basic strike....what???
9:30 "I think we can block through this." Decides to throw a fire potion instead, despite having enough block. I hope this doesn't become relevant in a little bit
I have made a habit of watching this specific series while doing something else as to avoid the misplays that were abundant in the beginning episodes. I assumed, rather stupidly it seems, that after almost 30 episodes NL wouldn't make many of the basic mistakes he still makes. This is the first episode I've specifically watched and this is painful beyond measure.
That's the question people ask every run he plays. I think this one was him actually passing on a lot of card opportunities too (he used to never pass cards).
Hey NL, you may want to take my advice with a grain of salt since I'm currently playing quite badly, but I pretty much consider potions worth about 5 hit points. In other words, if using a potion will prevent more than 5 damage, I'll use it every time. The only ones I really worry about saving are the two stat ups, because they can have so much implication on long fights.
i recently found the relic that gives a free power card at the start of each fight. it was from reading the book. that is probably one of the best relics in the game since it can be a 3 energy power for free.
Dear egg, I'm truly sorry that literally every comment on every spire video is complaining about misplays. You do misplay, but so does everybody. I know that you have a thick shell, but I still hope you don't feel too scrambled from it all. We love you really.
Right, but Orichalcum has cost him every run he's gotten it. He thinks it means his defense is covered, so he only and ALWAYS takes attack cards. Then, all attacks for 7+ suck up his HP so he's always resting and never upgrading. He ends up with 7 defense cards, 29 'slightly better strikes' and gets the snot beaten out of him when he can't draw all seven unupgraded defends each turn to soak damage. EVERY. RUN.
while I agree with your statement and this run was more likely to end at boss even if he didn't die where he did. But I do think he would have made it to the boss without issue with the little bit of thorn defense management with ori as his backup.
Literally no defense. I called this after wathing the LLA. NL was actually embarrassed by playing defense against the thornies, that's why he couldn't bear the thought of doing it for two turns, and ate 14 damage instead and ended the run. No joke, rewatch and listen for the nervous chuckle.
I have already beat this with both characters on the second day of owning this. No.1 tip deck management. I wond bot with decks at 13-15 cards tops. Also, stick to a strategy. Choose it in the beginning, and stick to it and don't divert. If you follow those tips you'll win.
@Matseuz I've beat it 7 times since Tuesday of 16Jan18 and I usually keep it to about 15 when I can. The whole point is card cycling. I should say residual 13-15 tops. So, if it doesn't stay in play or exhaust and your cards start topping above 15 it's gonna be hard to keep up with what you want need to draw.
@ Edward Fontaine honestly it's like any other card game. More closely like the card game dominion. The less junk cards or cards that contribute to the wombo combo or helps you get it without taking up too much space and helps you control your draws is what you want. To be frank, deck management is key (primarily towards card number limits).
Is it me or at 13:00, he basically did everything wrong? He could have kill the sphere with the potion and some attacks, poison the spike and get away with almost no damage. Instead, he lost 18 of his 34 remaining hp
Weak play 15:25 You choose a 2nd Underhand Strike instead of a Leg Sweep+ when you have to little defend and energy enough and you have to play powerful cards because you cant play more than 6, plain stupid
Have you learned how important defense is yet, or why having 35 cards is bad? By yet, I mean actually now, because you clearly haven't when you recorded this. Sometimes you play a Defend or a Survivor and you chuckle like you're actually embarrassed by it. One day you won't suck. Thanks for the extra video though. Made me smile... seriously you need to re-evaluate your early and late card picks. Learn what a thin deck actually is, don't just pretend you're gonna do it every run and die on room 40 or the boss because you can't draw the 20% of your deck that blocks six damage. = )
Some misplays to do with rushing the thorny bois, they wanna play a passive game? Let 'em. Stack poison and they go down quick 'n easy. The splodey bois are much harder to deal with like that, and often times it can feel like you have no choice but to eat 20 damage. However, if you avoid poisoning splodey bois where you can, rush 'em to low health with basic attacks and play a much slower defensive game when you're about to kill them (ie only killing them when you think it's optimal- in most cases only where it's free) then they're much easier to deal with. I'd rate the run a C, and the play a C-.
NL seems to be taking alot of shit for this series, as apparently everyone in the comments is a god in this game, but also suffers from a rare disease where they are physically hurt by each misplay. I for one really like this series and find the misplays most of the times to be very amusing. Sure, he could play better, but I don't want to watch a pro play it, or otherwise I wouldn't be here^^
it's more along the lines that he is making extremely basic mistakes, not because of bizarre and rare interactions, but stuff like; playing a poison based deck and rushing thorn enemies with strikes; touting about not taking damage, and then not spending all his energy, taking 15+ extra damage because of it.; etc.
I am not disagreeing with you, nor am I saying he doesn't do alot of silly mistakes. Playing maybe a bit slower and thinking things through wouldn't hurt him and alot of comments are giving good tipps and improvements, but usually there are also alot of rather disrespectful ones among it.
If he actually wasn't allowed to have more than 16 cards in his deck, his game would improve exponentially. No more Orichalcum either, he can't internalize that it blocks trash damage so he can play more attacks, he thinks it's actually his entire defense.
Taking shit on the internet is bread and butter for NL, it's all funs nothing more to it. And please, try not to compare basic level knowledge to "pro plays" :)
Mah dude, the guy that was hitting you for 20 could have been killed by you with the fire potion. You don't misplay, lately, because of knowledge of the game but more because you got your priorities scewed. I can try to say how I prioritice it but I kinda do that stuff on auto pilot without really thinking about it and thus don't know exactly what I do to make sure I receive minimal/no damage. What I do know is that the highest damaging enemy in a multi fight is priority over the smaller ones. Thorny dudes, ESPECIALLY with your poison heavy build should NEVER be hit with normal attacks. You chose to take 10 damage by killing him instead of just letting him live and take 7. You killed him instead of thinking of the bigger dude that would deal 10x2 damage on you. I really can't say how bad that was. kind of unbelievable. You were heavily invested in your potions and wether you could kill any with them but you forgot(?) about the big dude? I am amazed and apalled on how you handeled that fight :/ You are getting better but this is pretty hard to watch my man. Some like to see you fail, others, including me, want you to succeed.
Dont stack low cost cards when you have that much energy. Just keep your deck small so you can get to the expensive ones. At least not pick up shitty 0 cost cards
People love to snob all over NL’s gameplay yet keep coming back for more. They should try playing a game like this while maintaining an interesting narration and see if they can not misplay. Some of it is well meaning fun, some of it is just being-a-shit-person. Keep it friendly guys.
As a streamer, I promise narrating play by play is not a all difficult. If he was discussing the merits of 13th century feudalism or playing f***/marry/kill you might have a point.
If it is a combo-focused deck, ad you get a card that makes the combos easier to pull off because of a reduced energy cost, WHY WOULDN'T YOU TAKE IT?!?!
It's a block synergy deck, but also a poison deck, but also an attack damage focused deck, but also a discard synergy deck.
NL you have a bunch of poison cards. Why are you in such a rush to kill the spikes? Let them stack more thorns who cares. They never attack for any significant damage. Just pass until you draw poision and let that kill them.
His chuckle means he's literally _embarrassed_ to defend.
_"Why are you in such a rush to kill the spikes?"_
Because he's an idiot.
Even if he had to kill them you can just block the spikes. Which would've been the best play a couple times.
thorn guys are the last guy you need to care about unless you're playing shiv silent (with actual no poison) or multi attack ironclad
@MrTohawk there was at least one turn where he had a defend in his hand that could have blocked a spike, which would have let him make an attack, or even get a kill, while still taking no damage and without ruining Orichalcum. But he didn't use it. I think he just doesn't realize that block affects spike damage.
When he said, "you've given me 0 blocks", I wanted to respond, "No, you took so many cards, you don't have any blocks"
Orichalcum had it covered, what do you mean?
Attacks from third floor enemies NEVER do more than six damage.
Yeah what's the point of blocking damage instead of attacking nonstop when you have a poison build? It's not like the enemies will die on their own if you play passive... oh wait.
I think I've figured it out! As NL gets better at Rainbow Siege, he must get worse at this game. The balance needs to be kept.
He's actually getting better
Yet he forgets that killing a thorn enemy does not damage him.
Killing thorns by attack still damage you.
U can't balance an egg, my dude
"this guy blocks all debuffs"
Immediately debuffs him.
GG egg
9:30
NL: I think we need to hit him
Audience: You don’t
NL: I wish we didn’t
Audience: YOU DON’T
NL: But I think we do
Audience: Dies inside
"It was jacked from the start" My dude you had an amazing setup to do crazy energy things and you drafted shiv and discard garbage don't blame Choker.
oh god using the fire potion on the thorny dude when he could kill the guy hitting him for 20
I think having 42 cards didn't help either.
You were so afraid of thorns, you forgot you were poison based.
Mike C Because he wasn’t, NL had a little bit of everything in his deck this go around. Not that it is any different from previous episodes thus far. He needs to stick to a theme much harder and stop over picking “strike upgrades”. This is also why he rarely has enough defense.
Thank you! He could have just kept defending and waiting to draw his poison.
I literally refresh every 10 minutes waiting for this, please do 2 episodes a day for like a month
Is there a video where you're not in block trouble?
He still hasn't mastered card removal.
...or selection. 35+ cards, max six per turn, starting cards + C&D for defense.
no.
This series has replaced Isaac for me in terms of must watch, thank you Mr. Egg
mkatapodis2 same here, something I thought would never happen
1:09 "this guy blocks all debuffs" *immediately applies debuff*
He explained why, are you dumb?
After every single combat:
“NL stop taking cards... Stop taking cards... STOp taking cards... STOP TAKIng cards... STOP TAKING CARDS OH GOD”
They're all better than strike tho.
He was going for Mind Blast strategy, without any money ;)
IamI3rian Oh damn you right
my last 2 runs had 35+ cards and were both wins
Taking cards isn't as big of a deal as you guys make it seem to be As usual with any game NL plays, I find it extremely likely that at least half of the commenters have never even touched the game themselves, and they just repeat what others are saying without it being necessarily correct. The issue with NL is that he takes almost strictly only attack/utility cards, but no blocks. And then he dies, just like in this episode where he drew no blocks.
Orichalcum is this games Cube of Meat. It causes him to make stupid risky plays and then lose.
if you get orichalcum at the very start it's quite good but on later floors it's almost useless
NL, genuine advice. If you can enable poison, leave the thorny bois alone and let the posion kill them. You can easily block through their attacks.
NL, my dude, when you get 4 energy or velvet choker don't take shivs and take high energy cost cards, they are more effective
But how else would he fuel his dex relic? /s
When NL attributes his loss to the bracelet when that was one of the best parts about his run
A choker is a necklace my friend.
@IamI3rian no kink shaming here
Why do you keep taking 0 energy draw cards when you have a card/turn limit?
"Our powers grow stronger every day! Stronger everyday" - Squirly the Squirl. Also, those bombs at the end
Orichalcum kills his run every time, he thinks it means his defense is covered. It's a noobtrap he keeps falling for.
You don't need to attack the thorny bois NL, they only ever buff their spikes. Just block their occasional 7 damage and poison them.
How can he lose? He has an energy/poison/discard/shiv, clearly if you use all strategies you can never be wrong
Misplay 20:00
NL has what can be described as a poison heavy deck, instead he chooses to take 14 dmg to the chin from thorn boys. He is later 9 hp short of surviving exploder dudes.
SLAY MORE OF MY SPIRE EGGDADDY
Egg quote : " maybe this deck, dispite not having any synergies to speak of, is just good enought" -.-"
How bout NL’s awesome beat boxing at 10:34
"I think we need more block" Takes another underhanded strike instead of leg sweep+ for 3 weak 15 block. Classic Egg :c
Also has poison but chooses to attack thornboys head on.
NL cant get any better, he has ascended too high
Too smart for this world full of mere mortals.
16:48 He's done it! The madman brought it back!
Its actually idiotic to attack the thorn enemies instead of just waiting to draw your poison cards. You have multiple deadly poisons and bouncing flasks and you hit them with a basic strike....what???
*takes 2 underhanded strikes then draws them*
Two underhanded strikes?!
9:30 "I think we can block through this." Decides to throw a fire potion instead, despite having enough block. I hope this doesn't become relevant in a little bit
For those who don't have this game I'd like to point out that winning a run is not as hard ad NL makes it seem.
Seriously, 28 episodes (and two streams and an LLA) and one win right? Am I forgetting another one?
Uhh, this must mean 2 episodes a day? It usually isn't up until another 4 hours!
Rental Floss He did a twitter poll asking about 2 spires a day, I really love this series and I hope we get more of it. Fingers crossed!
14:00 i think it’s best to defend first and then attack thorny boy
Boy, these exploders in beta were horrific
13:18 I am cry
The game needs a rare/expensive "Remove a relic" encounter for runs like this.
This series makes me want to punch a hole in my wall.
I have never felt such kinship with an internet stranger before.
"This enemy negates all debufffs"
_proceeds to weaken and poison enemy_
I have made a habit of watching this specific series while doing something else as to avoid the misplays that were abundant in the beginning episodes. I assumed, rather stupidly it seems, that after almost 30 episodes NL wouldn't make many of the basic mistakes he still makes. This is the first episode I've specifically watched and this is painful beyond measure.
Also why the fuck is his deck 30 cards..?
35... And it's because they're all _slightly_ better strikes.
Honestly the misplays are bad but that's not what's costing him runs, it's that he's really, really bad at deck building.
That's the question people ask every run he plays. I think this one was him actually passing on a lot of card opportunities too (he used to never pass cards).
The Illuminati killed the real NL and replaced him with clone NL.
16:54 I can never pass up a Hearthstone reference.
I really don't want reduced card draw, I just want to take as much damage as possible...c'mon egg
How does he do it?! It already hurts watching after 2 minutes!!
9:30 or you can block for exact damage.
i recently found the relic that gives a free power card at the start of each fight. it was from reading the book. that is probably one of the best relics in the game since it can be a 3 energy power for free.
I remember when I first saw Slay the Spire in my inbox, I thought it looked bad. I watched one video and now I have seen 28...
This guy should be a politician the way he effortlessly bullshits his way through his own mistakes.
That snack bar ending lol
Dear egg,
I'm truly sorry that literally every comment on every spire video is complaining about misplays. You do misplay, but so does everybody. I know that you have a thick shell, but I still hope you don't feel too scrambled from it all. We love you really.
lmao noob
Bunch of miserable people in this community.
Slay the hostage, siege the oxygen. Guaranteed alpha pack.
He is so frustrating that he doesn't realize he can use defend to block thorns and then still have 6 block from oro.
Well I called it early on but I didn’t think he’d have so much trouble with basic enemies.
This hurts, but probably the most interesting deck from you!
Hey, NL you REALLY underrate Blur its an incredible card, especially if you can get multiple. It's like having Barricade for free!
the poison counters thorns pretty hard just something to keep in mind because the thorns dont hit when the poison hits.
This guy is really (REALLY) bad at this game, but the sheer perseverance is so amazing it makes it worth watching all these episodes.
10:32 close your eyes
I have already beat this with both characters on the second day of owning this. No.1 tip deck management. I wond bot with decks at 13-15 cards tops. Also, stick to a strategy. Choose it in the beginning, and stick to it and don't divert. If you follow those tips you'll win.
13-15 seems really low, unless for a very specific build.
25 seems like the ideal number.
Mateusz, I think that's because like NL you don't remove cards.
It depends on how consistent you need your deck to be I'm sure
@Matseuz I've beat it 7 times since Tuesday of 16Jan18 and I usually keep it to about 15 when I can. The whole point is card cycling. I should say residual 13-15 tops. 19:54 just skip to 20:37 to avoid pointless decision making.
We love ya, Northernlion
Even if it hurts.
You always want to kill the exploders first unless you have some super block that your waiting for you have no reason not to kill them
"Can we kill one? Absolutely not." He says while looking at an enemy with 36 health while holding 2 double damage strike+ for 18 each. Absolutely not.
Is it me or at 13:00, he basically did everything wrong? He could have kill the sphere with the potion and some attacks, poison the spike and get away with almost no damage. Instead, he lost 18 of his 34 remaining hp
Weak play
15:25 You choose a 2nd Underhand Strike instead of a Leg Sweep+ when you have to little defend and energy enough and you have to play powerful cards because you cant play more than 6, plain stupid
20:40 slow your roll. just defend and poison and they could have 100 thorns and it wouldn't matter
If I had a penny for every time NL as wrong about something, I'd be a billionaire.
HES DONE IT
Acquiesced!
Have you learned how important defense is yet, or why having 35 cards is bad?

Lord Rahl yes i have to be a god to see he doesnt use his energy.
9:37->i think we have to..Egg my dude, you had 5 dex u could block it all
That last battle was just suicide..
14:07 NL please
Mind if I roll mii-splay
HE’S SAID IT.
I've heard you were good at games

i am confused again but also curious
Will nl ever realise hes under valueing block and hp when you have a poison deck find out next time on STS
"this guy blocks debuffs." Come again?
I hope you play the silent again next time.... wait what am i saying this was 5 years ago
This might be the most painful episode yet, how can you misplay the thorny boys so hard
Everytime NL says his deck is weird or strange or goofy or jank, I think "yeah. Its a shit deck".
Always lacking block
He's got tons of 'slightly better strikes' tho, and Orichalcum, so his defense is covered forever.
NANI?
19:50 Why?
DO MORE THIS IS LIKE MY FAVOURITE SERIES EVER TRIPLE UPLOAD PLS PLSPLS
So afraid of Thornbois while playing poison deck, ech..
People love to snob all over NL’s gameplay yet keep coming back for more.

Plays a poison deck...does not just poison thorny boyzz
You don't want to seek out boss/tough fights. Relics aren't that good for the damage you'll suffer.
He doesn't know the value of footwork in a deck like this
ALREADY SEE THE MISPLAYS
If it is a combo-focused deck, ad you get a card that makes the combos easier to pull off because of a reduced energy cost, WHY WOULDN'T YOU TAKE IT?!?!
