I don't care what anyone says this is Smith personifying an addiction, who promises "you" everything while simultaneously taking it all away. Sweet, subtle, violent, comforting, all at the same time.
I see this song as a warning. Its basically about a personified addiction trying to convince someone to indulge in it, and as someone who probably has reason to just break down and get addicted as a way to avoid life, I see this song as a way to remind myself that it isn't that bad, and that I should just keep going.

this is one of the best songs ever written in my opinion. he captures this beautiful and comforting sadness so well. his voice is so reassuring but also so tired and heartachingly sad. Elliott smith is a genius. I don't know where I would be without his music.

A little while later I read a book called "Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda". Elliott was mentioned many times throughout the book so I decided I should finally give him a listen. But I forgot, until now. The movie version of the book (they changed the name to "Love, Simon") is coming out so I decided to read the book again. This time I didn't forget to look up this song. I am so not disappointed!

Elliott in a way has helped me deal with my depression. I love to listen to his music and be sad with him. After a few songs though I get up and go on with my life silently singing his beautiful lyrics.
I find this music the most soothing. It may sound depressing but it allows you to feel all the types of emotions of the world. It’s the music that u listen to when u are alone... just slowly close ur eyes and let it take control of ur soul
Unfortunately he tragically passed away due to suicide some years ago. The world lost an invaluable artist that day. Wherever he is hopefully he knows what an impact he’s made.

i still remember our last date and how enamoured i was, thinking “i probably look so dumb staring at him right now” we were at a bar he liked, i didn’t know the city too well, i remember our kisses and the comforting silence i felt after them, but he probably felt it was awkward. i wonder if it’ll be gut wrenching if i pass by the bar we had our last date at, still remember his blue dress shirt and his smile. i’ve been on the verge of throwing up cause i miss him so much. love is so weird, i really hope we can meet again, maybe it was the wrong time
