Thats a GREAT place to ride my newly built 2021 niner RDO hardtail that's only 21.15 pounds with pedals and the 16 miles to hit the top is a good conditioning test. I have been seriously neglecting riding lately, i am just under 3 hours from there so a nice way to spend a weekend
I would love a new ride myself. I respect all who ride "up" to the top. Yes a great place to spend a weekend. I was there a couple weeks ago hiking around "Trail Days".
If you rent a bike check it out carefully. Ride it around in the parking lot running it through the gears. Once they put you out at the top is not the time to figure out they gave you a bad bike. Make sure the tires are aired up and spin freely (not scrubbing against brake pads). Make sure you get a flat repair kit
October 9th. The peak color can vary a week or 2 each year. 2nd week in October should be a good time to see colorful leaves. Make reservations if you go on a week-end.
Just rode the trail a few days ago. My opinion is that narrow tires are a bad idea. Particularly in the early going. Trail conditions can deteriorate after a couple days rain.

Some of us go up and back down from Damascus - great exercise and downhill is a great reward. But where are the masks when people are in the store? Egads. I will avoid any store or shop where there are no masks as I don't need a side of Covid with my lovely day.
I always feel like a wimp when I pass those who started at the bottom and are on their way up. That has got to be a workout! I travel around for work and it seems the further I get out in the country, the less masks I see....

You would love it! Boone and Blowing Rock are awesome areas to explore. Check out Rocky Knob Mountain bike park in Boone.
Do you know if a road bike (small-tire) will do OK on this trail or you need an off-road bike?
Road bike should work just fine. The trail is smooth.
