I was sorry to see the HCSB go out of print. I greatly enjoyed its unique features and one of the reasons I am eager for the Legacy Bible to come out is because it incorporates at least some of these particulars as well. However, I have greatly warmed up to the CSB and also respect it as a good translation on its own terms...though I probably still prefer the HCSB. :-)

I had an HCSB years ago and just couldn't get into it so I donated it to Goodwill. This was prior to my compulsion to mark up my Bibles, so it was in pristine condition. I started watching channels like yours going on two years ago where I had seen, on more than one occasion, the CSB being reviewed. I ignored many of those videos because I mistakenly thought that because the CSB was printed by Holman, they were the same Bible, word for word. I finally stumbled upon a channel where the individual, like you today, did a side by side comparison, and a very in depth one at that. It was at that point that I started to pay attention to CSB reviews with more interest. I had already determined that the four versions I have been using for years now were sufficient for me, until the Bible Believing Christian channel did a wonderful review about not only the specifics of how the particular one she was reviewing was made, but also time was spent on the virtues of that version. I finally caved and bought a cheap readers CSB, and spent a little time with it, only to discover that I actually enjoyed it! In addition to the cheap Bible at my bedside now, I have a large print study Bible. Now I'm a five version gal, though my favorite is definitely the KJV.
Thanks Frisch! I've been going through a season where I've been looking into several translations this year as I read through the text in a year. I've been reading through the CSB for the past 3 years, but I've noticed at times where I get hung up on a phrase or word. So I started looking into the NET and NLT. I really love the NLT like many I'm sure, but I always feel like the translation police is going to come and take away my card lol. Anyway, recently I bounced back to the HCSB just to start doing a comparison and the changes are subtle but they are definitely there. I'm still in investigation mode, but for some reason I feel like the wording of HCSB is a bit more clearer than the CSB at times.. Honestly I just moved to the CSB because it was the "update". Again, thanks for your thoughts on this very topic.
Super helpful video!! I've never had either translations but since the HCSB is going out of print, many of their bibles have been on extreme sales and I was thinking of getting myself a copy. I think I will get one because I don't have any Bibles that say "Yahweh," and that seems like something great to have. Thanks for this video!
I had been a faithful HCSB reader for years. When the CSB came out, I gave away all my HCSB copies and bought the "new and improved" CSB. Unfortunately, I could never get into the language style and word flow of the CSB - it was too "chunky"? "churchy"?... So I quietly went back to my online bookstore and ordered some of the few-remaining HCSB's out there. The HCSB has re-won my heart ❤️ by: having disputed verses IN the text, maintaining a fresh language style, and avoiding "gender-neutering" pronouns. Keep up the good work with your vids!

I really liked the layout of the HCSB it had some really unique designs along with its readings. Kind of a bummer that they scrapped anymore printings .
I think the CSB also moves in the direction of gender neutrality, a bit? I think the HCSB's usage of Yahweh is a pretty big deal. At the end of the day, I like the CSB, but am sad to see the HCSB abandoned.

@@bmp6635 That is true in some cases, but in other cases it actually creates a sense of certainty where there is in reality ambiguity. A good example is 2 Thess. 2:7. The NKJV says, "He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way." The capitalized "He" means it is referring to deity, but this is not at all clear from the text. In fact, it is possibly a Dispensationalist bias that would argue that this passage is speaking of deity. Most historical commentators think the "he" is a human power, like the Roman emperor. But if a translation wants to capitalize pronouns, they _have_ to make a choice here, even though it is not obvious from the text what is meant.

Capitalized pronouns are not and are actually a convention of mid-late twentieth-century American Bible translators. Sure, punctuation can cause ambiguity, and it is not all certain, but we cannot remove it without it ceasing to be English. Capitalized pronouns, however, are not essential to written English and ultimately add nothing.
Excellent! I was never able to get into the HCSB but have just ordered the CSB Ancient Faith Study Bible in the premier Handcrafted Collection, so I am trusting that this update of the translation is good. I’m sad that they removed the capitals for Deity - hopefully my fav translation the NKJV never does that. I have kept the HCSB in the Illustrated Study Bible because it was such a beautiful Bible. As one of your reviewers has noted, the beatitudes in this Bible do have, “Blessed are …”, so at least some HCSBs kept with the traditional wording. Thanks again.
I was hoping you would speak on some of the history of these versions. I read somewhere once that they were expecting to go a different route than they finally did with the CSB. Originally it was supposed to be based on the MAJORITY TEXT. Otherwise thanks for the video.
This interesting video just popped up on my TH-cam page! As you know, Tim, I follow the question of the preferred Bible versions of both the general public and also of serious students. Once the HCSB had been discontinued, it might have been expected that it’s readers, and others, would switch to the replacement CSB; but this seems not to have happened : the opportunity seems to have been taken to explore other versions. Be that as it may, CSB has never really done well : for example, for the year ended 31st December 2021, our survey shows that it was the preferred version of 8% of the US general public but of 4% of serious students; the corresponding figures for UK were 6% and 2%.
Watching this video reminded me of a fact I'd forgotten. Have you considered that the reason that we all debate back and forth over this translation and that translation is because; we ALL know what the meaning is! We are actually debating over the various ways of saying the same thing. The point I'm making is GOD HAS GIVEN US THE MEANING OF HIS WORD. WE KNOW!! We are BLESSED people! God be praised!!

Christianbook.com still has a few HCSB Bibles. Thy have screenshots for you to peruse. HCSB is best for me. I have over a half dozen copies, A Life Application, a Women's Bible, an Apologetics Bible, and 2 HCSB Study Bibles. Plus Gene Getz Life Essentials Study Bible.
I really like what you said about the HCSB for personal use and the CSB for public use. I’ve using the HCSB since it came out circa ‘03 or ‘04. I’ve been finding your videos helpful on the subject as I consider updating to the CSB update. One question I have abou the divergences, is that the HCSB has a system of bullet point notes. Words with the bullet points had a extensive glossary in the back that explained terms. Does the CSB also have this? Or was that feature removed? Also, my 2003 HCSB does have Blessed at the beginning of each verse in the beatitudes. In fact only verses 5:5 and 5:11 are different between the 2003 HCSB and the 2020 CSB.
Glad you have found my videos helpful! The bullet note system is removed in the CSB. Also, yes, I have heard that the early editions of the HCSB had Blessed at the beginning of the beatitudes. My copy was a 2009 edition, I believe.
I have a large print HCSB and a smaller one. But have ordered the CSB..in large print and I like it. Probably #2 AFTER NASB 95 and even 2020. I will treasure my old large print and references to Yahweh. Amen.

Thanks for your detailed hard work! Personally, I too prefer the HCSB, especially for the excellent notes, and for the use of Yahweh and slave. AND, check this out: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack. HCSB PSALM 23: 1 OK! 🙌😊 The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need. CSB PSALM 23: 1 🤔🙄🤐 God did not express it this way! The idea in the Hebrew is "I shall not want" or lack, etc. The CSB misses it here. Same for GNT AND NLT.
I love seeing Yahweh.. actually, I tend to prefer translations that use more traditional wordings.. in fact, I have decided to stick with my NKJV Bibles for 2021. I love it...even more than my beloved RSV. Besides, my two new NKJV Bibles are purple...my fav color. Both are Nelson’s..leathersoft.. One is a verse by verse, which I think helps those of us with vision issues.
Afrikaans is my first language, so I think I look at translations very differently than English speakers who aren't bilingual. I don't mean disrespect, I just mean that I have never thought there is only one correct English (or other language) translation. Some words can't be translated 100%. You can still get the point across perfectly, it's just that some small nuances fall away. Like "cute" can always be translated to "oulik", but "oulik" can't always be translated to cute. "Oulik" is almost like "nice" and "cute" had a baby - but even that doesn't quite translate it perfectly. Another example: "I'm going to mow my lawn" directly translated from Afrikaans would be "I going my grass cut". As long as the translators keep to the original as closely as possible, it doesn't matter if "blessed" is at the beginning or end of the sentence. So read more than one translation (excluding the few very bad ones out there) and see how it can absolutely be a blessing to you.
I have and like both translations. As I read about the tabernacle this year, one big difference that jumped out at me was “manatee skins” in HCSB vs “other durable leather” in the CSB. I always wondered why the translators specifically chose manatee instead of something more general, like porpoise.
Not so much doctrinal as "textual." When using the Alexandrian textform, the respective translation committee has to figure out how they're going to have the Byzantine passages appear (in print).
CSB seems to me, to be like the NIV. But I think the CSB is a little better then the NIV. I really like it when you compare translations. Maybe you can do a CSB vs NIV. Thank you my Christian nerd brother for another great video🙏🏼
The CSB tends to be a bit more formal equivalent in areas, than the NIV. Holman describes the CSB as an optimal equivalence translation -- landing between formal and dynamic equivalence.
My Bible translation of choice is the CSB after having come from the HCSB. I think both are good and thorough translations; however my Study Bible of choice is the CSB Study Bible--it outtrips even the MacArthur Study Bible, I think.
Personally I just purchased the CSB but I can’t replace my HCSB as my mother gave it to me when I was in high school. The only thing I really don’t like about my HCSB is that I’m reading into the crack of the book while all over versions I have don’t have that. It also doesn’t have the text subheadings
They both are the same translation If it printed by Holman the owner of the translation they add the H if it is licensed to other printers it is just CSB The notes and other aids that each Bible has is unique to the publisher I love my HCSB
I like the HCSB because it's great for study. I like that fact that there is more info in the HCSB to give one a greater insight into God's word. I also think that the "S" stands for "study" and not necessarily "standard".
Capitalized pronouns is another difference, like is discussed in the last video. A second difference is price! They are practically giving away HCSB Bibles.
My HCSB bible just lost its binding....so I called the publisher because it carried a lifetime warranty.....so they sent me the CSB equivalent, and I found that I did not like it much at all. Yes, its all personal preference, and this video is great as far as dealing with the major difference. I would add that the HCSB and CSB differ in how OT references are set aside......while both are bolded I noticed that many are now in the text of NT whereas they are more set off in a separate paragraph in HCSB and this helps set off Jesus' references to OT...........I also found the typeface, spacing and kerning to be off.......the HCSB for me, was much more readable......not sure why...last it is true that at the very end if you are in a group study, the HCSB does read differently and as such can bring some comments........I just finished a one year sabbatical and used HCSB along with the Blue Letter Bible app to parallel ESV and LSB ....... it was fun. I do love my HCSB and have decided to have it rebound when I have the time and $$ to do so. Last, I find it super curious at least in my new CSB, there exist BULLETS before certain terms......and in my HCSB there are a few pages before the concordance that summarize the meanings of the bulleted words......but in the CSB the bullets remain but no page to describe them....!!! Where did it go, why can;t i find them? curious.
Why do neither of my HCSB bibles use Yahweh? Neither my HCSB Holman Illustrated Study Bible, copyright 2006, nor my HCSB Fellowship of Christian Athletes (God's Game Plan), copyright 2009, say Yahweh. Also, both of them have Blessed at the beginning of each of the Beatitudes. So, what edition are you using in your review?
hello frish i just went on amazon to see the price of the HCSB study bible the one that looks old and they scared me over 140 $ and used 84$ i almost fell off my chair i remember a review you did a couple of years ago abaut that same bible and one was under 12$ and the other was under 20 or 23$ i live out in the boonies here in el salvador and the only one that delievers over here is amazon and they take an arm and a leg from you if you could help a brother out i would be so happy thank you and may our sweet Lord bless you
I believe the HCSB is the better translation, because it is more clearly true to the context of the N.T. writers. Specifically when it better translates the word of "language(s)", instead of "tongue(s)" , which has ignored the historical context of Acts, especially Acts 2. These were clear, actual languages, and why the KJV chose to call it an archaic "tongue" is beyond me. Read the historical context of the entire New Testament. All the apostles and other NT writers were referring to actual languages. Of course we can understand that is what the word tongue is referring to. So it is not a grave problem, ....., until you get the folk trying to make up languages of their own, and then lean on an ancient English rendering of the word "tongue" as some kind of other thing, that is not taught in the Scriptures. No, I am not a skilled translator, but by reading the historical context and by referrencing scholars who are conservatively skilled , I believe that is the wisdom called for in this stating of the various New Testament occurances. They are actual, real , known languages. Even the tones of a musical instrument are supposed to be recognizable, as Paul taught. How much more, then, are "languages." The better translation is "language(s)."
My church is truly non-denominational. And it's not uncommon to hear multiple translations during the Lord's Supper. One person gives a reading from the NIV someone else from the ESV and so on. I prefer the language used in HCSB it's easier to follow along when you have multiple translations being thrown at you.
Let’s be honest....if you don’t want something that’s tradition HCSB is for you...if you want something a little more biblish and traditional CSB is for you.
I think NASB and ESV have just repeated KJV in places like ps 34.19 but CSB is different rather lending itself to a NEW translation. So iff NKJV. NASB. ESV. ARE just warmed over KJV. Then among the NEW BIBLES.. THEN ONLY THE CSB IS REALKT NEW. plus I like that it IS the ONLY ONE WITH CHRISTIAN in its NAME. It IS MY favourite version AS of today.
I have both the CSB and HCSB. One of the things I DO NOT like about the CSB is the removal of capitals of pronouns referring to deity. In other Bible versions that capitalize, it helps to identify the speaker where sometimes the pronoun's antecedent is unclear.
@@aaronebright4698 He talks about this, around the 7 minute mark. The HCSB includes it in the text but surrounds it with brackets; the CSB does not include it in the main text but makes note of it in the footnotes.

I’ve found that using the HCSB in trying to talk in everyday English to unbelievers is helpful. It’s one of those quirks that help in outreach.

I was gifted a csb study Bible and I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve just purchased my second csb. It’s a compact Bible for me to travel with.
I use the holman since it is the only one I found in Extra giant print. This makes it easier for long stints of reading.

I really like what you said about the HCSB for personal use and the CSB for public use. I’ve using the HCSB since it came out circa ‘03 or ‘04. I’ve been finding your videos helpful on the subject as I consider updating to the CSB update. One question I have abou the divergences, is that the HCSB has a system of bullet point notes. Words with the bullet points had a extensive glossary in the back that explained terms. Does the CSB also have this? Or was that feature removed?
Also, my 2003 HCSB does have Blessed at the beginning of each verse in the beatitudes. In fact only verses 5:5 and 5:11 are different between the 2003 HCSB and the 2020 CSB.
Glad you have found my videos helpful! The bullet note system is removed in the CSB. Also, yes, I have heard that the early editions of the HCSB had Blessed at the beginning of the beatitudes. My copy was a 2009 edition, I believe.

I have a large print HCSB and a smaller one. But have ordered the CSB..in large print and I like it. Probably #2 AFTER NASB 95 and even 2020. I will treasure my old large print and references to Yahweh. Amen.

I just found and purchased a HCSB was wondering if it were a good choice.
I love seeing Yahweh.. actually, I tend to prefer translations that use more traditional wordings.. in fact, I have decided to stick with my NKJV Bibles for 2021. I love it...even more than my beloved RSV.
Besides, my two new NKJV Bibles are purple...my fav color. Both are Nelson’s..leathersoft.. One is a verse by verse, which I think helps those of us with vision issues.
HCSB for the win!
Afrikaans is my first language, so I think I look at translations very differently than English speakers who aren't bilingual. I don't mean disrespect, I just mean that I have never thought there is only one correct English (or other language) translation. Some words can't be translated 100%. You can still get the point across perfectly, it's just that some small nuances fall away. Like "cute" can always be translated to "oulik", but "oulik" can't always be translated to cute. "Oulik" is almost like "nice" and "cute" had a baby - but even that doesn't quite translate it perfectly.
Another example: "I'm going to mow my lawn" directly translated from Afrikaans would be "I going my grass cut". As long as the translators keep to the original as closely as possible, it doesn't matter if "blessed" is at the beginning or end of the sentence. So read more than one translation (excluding the few very bad ones out there) and see how it can absolutely be a blessing to you.

I have and like both translations. As I read about the tabernacle this year, one big difference that jumped out at me was “manatee skins” in HCSB vs “other durable leather” in the CSB. I always wondered why the translators specifically chose manatee instead of something more general, like porpoise.
But why did the CSB take out Acts 8:37 from the HCSB? The verse is removed completely and relegated to footnotes. It seems a doctrinal adjustment.

Not so much doctrinal as "textual." When using the Alexandrian textform, the respective translation committee has to figure out how they're going to have the Byzantine passages appear (in print).
CSB seems to me, to be like the NIV. But I think the CSB is a little better then the NIV. I really like it when you compare translations. Maybe you can do a CSB vs NIV. Thank you my Christian nerd brother for another great video🙏🏼
The CSB tends to be a bit more formal equivalent in areas, than the NIV. Holman describes the CSB as an optimal equivalence translation -- landing between formal and dynamic equivalence.
My Bible translation of choice is the CSB after having come from the HCSB. I think both are good and thorough translations; however my Study Bible of choice is the CSB Study Bible--it outtrips even the MacArthur Study Bible, I think.

Personally I just purchased the CSB but I can’t replace my HCSB as my mother gave it to me when I was in high school. The only thing I really don’t like about my HCSB is that I’m reading into the crack of the book while all over versions I have don’t have that. It also doesn’t have the text subheadings

If it printed by Holman the owner of the translation they add the H if it is licensed to other printers it is just CSB
The notes and other aids that each Bible has is unique to the publisher

I like the HCSB because it's great for study. I like that fact that there is more info in the HCSB to give one a greater insight into God's word. I also think that the "S" stands for "study" and not necessarily "standard".
Capitalized pronouns is another difference, like is discussed in the last video. A second difference is price! They are practically giving away HCSB Bibles.

About a year ago I picked up some brand-new leather HCSB Bibles that were originally sold $89.99 each ... for $11.99 each.
My HCSB bible just lost its binding....so I called the publisher because it carried a lifetime warranty.....so they sent me the CSB equivalent, and I found that I did not like it much at all. Yes, its all personal preference, and this video is great as far as dealing with the major difference. I would add that the HCSB and CSB differ in how OT references are set aside......while both are bolded I noticed that many are now in the text of NT whereas they are more set off in a separate paragraph in HCSB and this helps set off Jesus' references to OT...........I also found the typeface, spacing and kerning to be off.......the HCSB for me, was much more readable......not sure why...last it is true that at the very end if you are in a group study, the HCSB does read differently and as such can bring some comments........I just finished a one year sabbatical and used HCSB along with the Blue Letter Bible app to parallel ESV and LSB ....... it was fun. I do love my HCSB and have decided to have it rebound when I have the time and $$ to do so.
Last, I find it super curious at least in my new CSB, there exist BULLETS before certain terms......and in my HCSB there are a few pages before the concordance that summarize the meanings of the bulleted words......but in the CSB the bullets remain but no page to describe them....!!! Where did it go, why can;t i find them? curious.

Why do neither of my HCSB bibles use Yahweh? Neither my HCSB Holman Illustrated Study Bible, copyright 2006, nor my HCSB Fellowship of Christian Athletes (God's Game Plan), copyright 2009, say Yahweh. Also, both of them have Blessed at the beginning of each of the Beatitudes. So, what edition are you using in your review?

hello frish i just went on amazon to see the price of the HCSB study bible the one that looks old and they scared me over 140 $ and used 84$ i almost fell off my chair i remember a review you did a couple of years ago abaut that same bible and one was under 12$ and the other was under 20 or 23$ i live out in the boonies here in el salvador and the only one that delievers over here is amazon and they take an arm and a leg from you if you could help a brother out i would be so happy thank you and may our sweet Lord bless you

I believe the HCSB is the better translation, because it is more clearly true to the context of the N.T. writers. Specifically when it better translates the word of "language(s)", instead of "tongue(s)" , which has ignored the historical context of Acts, especially Acts 2. These were clear, actual languages, and why the KJV chose to call it an archaic "tongue" is beyond me. Read the historical context of the entire New Testament. All the apostles and other NT writers were referring to actual languages. Of course we can understand that is what the word tongue is referring to. So it is not a grave problem, ....., until you get the folk trying to make up languages of their own, and then lean on an ancient English rendering of the word "tongue" as some kind of other thing, that is not taught in the Scriptures. No, I am not a skilled translator, but by reading the historical context and by referrencing scholars who are conservatively skilled , I believe that is the wisdom called for in this stating of the various New Testament occurances. They are actual, real , known languages. Even the tones of a musical instrument are supposed to be recognizable, as Paul taught. How much more, then, are "languages." The better translation is "language(s)."

No, its N.T. English is based on the Alexandrian textform.
My church is truly non-denominational. And it's not uncommon to hear multiple translations during the Lord's Supper. One person gives a reading from the NIV someone else from the ESV and so on. I prefer the language used in HCSB it's easier to follow along when you have multiple translations being thrown at you.
Let’s be honest....if you don’t want something that’s tradition HCSB is for you...if you want something a little more biblish and traditional CSB is for you.
I think NASB and ESV have just repeated KJV in places like ps 34.19 but CSB is different rather lending itself to a NEW translation.
So iff NKJV. NASB. ESV. ARE just warmed over KJV.
Then among the NEW BIBLES..
THEN ONLY THE CSB IS REALKT NEW.
plus I like that it IS the ONLY ONE WITH CHRISTIAN in its NAME.
It IS MY favourite version AS of today.
I have both the CSB and HCSB. One of the things I DO NOT like about the CSB is the removal of capitals of pronouns referring to deity. In other Bible versions that capitalize, it helps to identify the speaker where sometimes the pronoun's antecedent is unclear.
