This film “The Small World of Sammy Lee” is a great example of the 60’s anti hero with a portrayal exemplified by Anthony Newleys nuanced performance that really captured the atmosphere of Soho at the time. Hughes the Director with an eye for the natural performance accompanied by the master of the camera Wolfgang Suschitzky and the haunting score by Kenny Graham brought to the screen a heart felt moving story of life being led in the seamier side of London. There were many performances to praise but Robert Stephen’s as a very nasty type and the innocence Julie Foster portrayed added to the realism of what I consider a black & white masterpiece of a cult film. Mr Newley was one of the UK’s great artist who went on to write and perform such hit musicals as “Stop the World I Want to Get Off “ & “The Smell of the Greasepaint and the Roar of the Crowd” as well as entertaining for many years audiences in the US. It’s a film you will want to watch more than once if not many more times.
She was stunning in it. And for a 19 year old really played her part well, like she’d been acting for ages. I can’t think of anyone who could have played that part better.
She's wonderful, so many great films that she appeared in, TSWOSL is one of my favourites but also The System, Alfie, Two Left Feet and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
