Kim Carnes ~ Bette Davis Eyes 1981 Disco Purrfection Version

- Kim Carnes was on the upswing in the early 80's beginning with her cover of Smokey Robinson's "More Love" with a distinctive synthesizer sound that defined the production, her warm and raspy voice providing an effective counterpoint to the smooth and lush electronic sounds that enveloped the songs. Donna Weiss and 60's recording star Jackie DeShannon, (Put A Little Love in Your Heart), wrote a honky tonk song tribute to Bette Davis which Jackie recorded for her "New Arrangement" LP of 1975. They sent it to Carnes producer at the time, George Tobin (who would go on to produce Tiffany). Kim was not interested in the song at the time and after she changed producers to Val Garay, Weiss sent her the song again. Bill Cuomo, the synthesizer player, came up with the new chords that cemented the commercial appeal of the song which was quickly completed and put on her "Mistaken Identity" LP. The appeal was astounding! It spent 9 weeks at #1, and dropped to #2 for one week while the Stars on 45 single took over, but returned to #1 the following week for another four weeks. The song was the #1 hit of all of 1981, won a double Grammy (Song and Record of the Year) and was #1 in 21 other countries. Talk about striking a chord with the masses!
AFTER 41, THIS SONG IS STILL A PURE CLASSIC.

One correction. Bette Davis Eyes was #1 for 5 weeks, dropping to #2 as Stars on 45 hit #1. Then Kim returned to #1 for 4 more weeks for a total of 9 weeks at #1, falling one week short of Olivia Newton-John's #1 hit for 10 weeks, Physical which was the biggest hit of 1981.
Physical was also biggest hit of the 80s.
Biggest hit of 81 was Tainted Love.

beautiful theme, when this song came out I was an infantryman in Argentina. when we were on duty we hooked the portable radio to our helmets and this song played, it was forbidden to do so but disco music was louder!!
