For the record, I enjoyed this song and said, that I thought it was very good, well written rock music. So can we back off on some of the personal, hate filled comments? This is one song, and the only one I've heard from the band thus far. I'm interested in checking out more from them and will. But I don't understand some of the hate.

@@sonicallydisruptive I've watched several of your other videos, and your approach to this one was unusual (as compared to what I've seen from your channel). You appeared defensive from the very beginning, and you more or less told us you didn't really want to be doing this. It was almost like you had a sense of dread, and your presence was just drenched in it, and never changed much. I have 100% commented on a video and gotten BLASTED for an subconscious inference I made, and I argued back with them about it. However, upon reflection, those people who called me out were right on some level (how mean they were about it was irrelevant).
Life is too short. If you actively feel trepidation about a band or a song (as it appeared here), just don't do the video. As I said in another comment, if, after recording, you don't like what you saw, or what you said, don't spend the time editing and uploading. That stuff takes forever, and who wants to expend that effort on something your heart isn't in anyway? There are thousands of really great songs. You could be listening to / reacting to something which really Does pique your interest.
Everyone has their own tastes, and I'm sorry if you got flamed in the comments. I truly believe this is the best rock band on the planet, but if other people don't, that's cool. Good luck with your channel.

Don't get bothered too much by TH-cam comments, man. I thought it's a good honest reaction. You were respectable to the band. I see no issues. Hope you check out more of Band Maid because they are a great band. My favorite rock band currently out! I'm 65 and came thru the golden era of rock, and I am glad to see something this good for rock! As for girls rocking forever, that's true, but the all girl rock bands started with the Runaways in the 70"s. Joan Jett and Lita Ford were members and are rock legends now. I don't care if it's guys or girls rocking, I just love good rock, and Band Maid delivers on that. Good review!

I absolutely love this band, Play was the first song of theirs I saw on TH-cam from a 2018 concert that had bursts of fire accompanying the performance instead of a laser show - I have been a fan ever since. Having gone through their back catalog and actually bought CD's for the first time in years they have yet to produce a song I don't like and that isn't because they are females - its because they are great musicians and singers and proven themselves as songwriters. I don't actually notice anymore that they are singing in Japanese I just enjoy the sound of Saiki's voice and Miku's voice - both as individual singers and together where they make some great vocal harmonies. The musicianship is up there with the greats and their tightness as a band is outstanding. On top of all that you can see they really enjoy one another's company, see they love to perform together, see they have fun on stage and see they enjoy seeing the fans enjoying their music. I literally am all smiles when listening to them. Something else I am grateful to them for, opening my eyes to Japanese music - there are some really good Japanese bands that in my opinion put Western groups to shame and yet I don't see them on MTV or most other music stations.

IMHO Band-Maid embraced their femininity, they don't try (as other female rockers) to look like scary macho badasses. Band-Maid are not posers. They're relentlessly working on their skills, musicianship, creativity and keep producing great songs (90+ already), and that makes them true badasses.

It's nice the way you approached to BAND-MAID because you're aware of some preconceptions about them. And yes, when someone oversold something, your expectatives are so high that, when it doesn't match, we get a little bit dissapointed.
In my case, I discovered BAND-MAID by myself and I was blown away because I didn't expect that sound. But, when I listened to their records, I fell in love with them because of the way they incorporate multiple influences, from Hard Rock, to Funk, Punk, Blues, that come close to the rock style I've always love, with a fresh new sound and a distinctive style.
In musical terms, for me BAND-MAID have a really clever writing, they know how and when to put things to get you excited and interested, without getting too technical or obssesed with fast shredding or complex song structures and things like that, they embrace a very pop radio friendly type of songs instead. And they're catchy as hell, something that has been difficult for me to found nowadays. I listen a lot of bands from djent to stoner rock, I like a lot of them in terms of musicianship, but no one has me singing like BAND-MAID does, I always feel energetic and joyful when listening to them. But well, that's me.
I really suggest you to dig more on them, because they're more diverse with songs with different accents musically and emotionally (for example "Wonderland" has nothing to do with "Rinne", but they're in the same album).
I'd like to recommend the following ones:
-Domination (live) (very high energy one, like "Play")
    th-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/w-d-xo.html
    -Rinne (more heavy metal sound)
    th-cam.com/video/CQ9dbEVgZcA/w-d-xo.html
-Wonderland (with more jazzy feel and a groovy funky basslines)
    th-cam.com/video/x4hxLeHbqZo/w-d-xo.html
    -DICE (energetic hard rock)
    th-cam.com/video/ZpAYnVJX9CY/w-d-xo.html
-Onset (a very guitar driven instrumental)
    th-cam.com/video/mVrN-j_Uc0U/w-d-xo.html
Hope you can react to one of them and give your thoughts. I think BAND-MAID has a really grown effect, so maybe the more you listen, the more you'll like them. But if it's not, at least you gave them a try.
    Cheers!!!

Good honest reaction but may I point out that this performance was special because it actually showcased the improvement of the rhythm guitarist and founder, Miku Kobato. When she created the band back in 2013, she couldn't even play the instrument. She's the sole reason why we have BAND-MAID, she's also responsible for many of the lyrics in their discography. Her teacher and lead guitarist, Kanami Tono, composes all their music. Their song "Alone" was their breakthrough where they wrote, composed and arranged their own song, prior to this, all their songs were written for them. Unlike many corporate created groups, the way this band came together is almost like a fairy tale. I'm sure the fans will fill you in and I've subbed to watch out for the video when you truly get wowed. Stay safe and keep reacting to BAND-MAID! :)

There is more to this band than you first see/hear. They are sort of the perfect storm but I was not blown away at first. It was not the typical music I used to listen to, although I liked it. The more I heard, the more hooked I got. They always surprise with something unexpected and every song is so well written. Then there is the pure and innocent happiness they radiate. It's fun! Music is fun! Life is fun! No trying to be tuff and trying to act hard, but they still can play hard. Then there are strong personalities in every position. Very few bands manage to have a group where every fan knows the name of everyone. Most people who like a band forget one or two of the member's names and they probably did not have Japanese names. Sure, there are more technical bands, there are harder bands, more chocking, but there are no bands as likably as Band-Maid. They manage to turn me into a fanboy at an old age and I never been a huge fan of a single band before. It's very hard to explain, but they can easily take over your musical life. It's actually a bit scary.

There might be some over selling of Band maid.
But it's very rare to find a band that write songs that can appeal to the masses while also being quite technical at parts.
And another less common trait that this band is very celebrated for is giving every band member there time to shine.
All of this I think makes Band maid a great role model for rock bands.

"Play" was originally intended to be an instrumental - just before recording it, they changed their mind and added last-minute lyrics. So that's one of their most "basic" songs - but, as you noticed, a crowd-pleaser. If you want something more musically sophisticated, "Wonderland" (from the same concert) or "Puzzle" will get your attention for sure.

The reason why I love this band so much is that they are such a hard working band with their own color. They keep improving as a band, and as individual musicians. They are just unique and special to me. The more I listen the more details and layers that I start to pick up. Their music isn't simple cut and paste, which most big name bands have done and continue to do. Technically there are many just as good as them, I guess that's what you wanted to say.

I fully understand your reaction to the live performance.
I've been to this band live for over 3 years now.
I participated in the live of this video.
To be honest, I was a little disappointed with the live performance at this time.
I thought it became very soft.
It used to be harder and faster.
However, the explanation of the reactor called Chase Carneson made me understand my discomfort.
The theme of BAND-MAID is decided every year.
Last year was the theme of turbulence.
    This year's theme is evolution.
I was too obsessed with the work created on the theme of BAND-MAID's turbulence and couldn't understand the evolution.
I liked the hard and heavy BAND-MAID, and I can fully understand the reaction when watching your live performance.
Even if my friends recommend many bands, I can't listen to them obediently.
Listening to something that is different from your taste will cause a rejection reaction.
Still, many reactors opened my eyes.
I'm Japanese, but I hated Japanese rock.
It wasn't unique and I thought it would be the same no matter what I listened to.
I felt nauseous when I listened to BABYMETAL's first song (DOKI DOKI Morning) on TH-cam.
After that, when my friend recommended me to listen to GIMI choco, I was shocked, but I was still stupid.
It wasn't until KAMI-BAND became a backing band for BABYMETAL that I began to listen to songs obediently.
Then my Japanese rock journey began.
I'm a fan of many Japanese rock bands now.
I can fully understand your feelings.
It has already been erased, but I think that the reaction was a little different when I was watching the 2018 play live.
If you like, there are many fan cams of USA live, UK live and Germany live performed by BAND-MAID.
We recommend that you look at the most viewed fancams for 2018-2019.
Since it is a machine translation, I am worried that Japanese is correctly translated into English.
    I understand your reaction.

Thanks for your honest reaction. I used to feel the same way as you do. You are right; women have always been rocking. My favorites growing up were Lita Ford, Vixen, The GO GOs, and Heart. After checking out more of Band Maids' other many hits, I just could not deny the fact that they are really the real deal, and their musicianships can easily put many other rock bands to shame. Their music styles are diverse and full of surprises, and they literally do not have a bad song. It is so good to know we have a band on the other side of the world that does such an excellent job to keep rock n roll alive when the rock music scene in North America is just not much happening. I will say check out their other live performances, especially I don't think this song is their best work, and also you should not really judge a band by only one song. They have so many catchy hits for a band that has only been around since 2013. I'm sure you will find how consistently great they are and that they do deserve the hype and more.

To those Band-Maid fans who think the way to respond to a negativity towards the band is to attack the reviewer, I ask the question - Do you think they girls in the band would be pleased by your actions? There are points that can be addressed, such as the (assumed) over-hyping of the band perhaps colouring the opinion, but which of the ladies in the band do you think would be happy knowing reactors who aren't keen on the band get abuse heaped on them? There are loads of all female bands in Japan, and many of them are metal bands so are heavier than Band-Maid, so in Japan an all-female band isn't remotely unusual. The gimmick here was the idea of the rhythm guitarist, who used to be in an idol band, dressed cute, singing cute songs. She thought it would be different to have a band that looked cute, but played hard rock. In truth, only two of them still dress like maids, with their outfits changing quite early into the band's career. Some of the band weren't totally sold on the idea at first, but now say they they can't imagine going on stage dressed normally. Overall though, it's about the music, but a lot of people into metal never quite engage with it, just as a lot of Band-Maid fans never really understand the fuss made about many metal bands. If they hit that groove with you, they smash it out of the park time and time again, but if they don't, then they don't.

I think they *are* unique and subtle enough that some people just need someone else to point out the noteworthy stuff before before they really appreciate them, though. But then one risks veering into telling somebody what they should like, which usually backfires.

Their first video 'Thrill' which got them online attention works, in my opinion, as the band's visual 'mission statement'...beautiful girls, but you quickly realise you're not hearing some 'idol' crap. After seeing that I then watched 'Domination (Live)'...like 5 years later: They're killing it live with mature sound, great musicianship. Two of the band won't wear maid outfits...the hemlines are lower but nobody cares about that. After the above, I saw 'Freedom (Live)' with nice drum solo moment...and I recommend 'Onset (Live)' their superb instrumental showcasing some skills for sure.

Enjoyed your reaction and subbed. Sure, there is some hype that this is a "chick band". And as you said this is, of course, nothing new. But speaking for myself and I'm sure a majority of their fans, you hit on the reason after watching; "It's a good high energy rock song". The problem is you really don't get much of that anymore from the US or the UK (where we used to get it), especially from the youth. It's not to say it doesn't exist...it's just not being pushed by the industry. Nowadays, if you want good hard rock/heavy metal, you have to go to either the Nordic countries or Asia. The Nordic countries it's pretty much all Metal, and there's nothing wrong with that if you're in the mood for it. But for "good, high energy rock n roll", that pretty much leaves Asia, and Japan is leading the trend. So I really think that's where the attraction lies. It allows those of us old enough to remember those high energy rocks shows a bit of nostalgia. And let's be honest. It doesn't hurt that they look adorable while doing it. Cheers.

    • @patriksjoholm7102
      @patriksjoholm7102 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The nordic countries is not all metal. There are lots of great rock n' roll bands from that part of the world. I guess hard rock is not as popular as metal, so these bands are not as easy to find as the metal bands, but they're there is you just look for them. Nicke Andersson for example have been making amazing rock music in lots of bands for the last 25 years (right now his "main" bands seems to be Imperial State Electric and Lucifer). Thundermother is another fun swedish band that i really like, they're kind of like a female AC/DC. I'm pretty sure Turbonegro is still around too (they used to be really good, but I haven't actually listened to any albums they've done in the last 15 years or so, so they might not be as good as they once were).

Poor wording on my part. I meant to say that the region is most known for metal. I was a huge fan of Crucified Barbara. Got to see them live and hang out with them after the show twice. In fact, Crucified Barbara was responsible for my discovery of Band Maid. It was their videos I was watching when the "Thrill" thumbnail popped up. I thought: "What the hell?" clicked on it, then thought: "Hell Yeah!".

It seems you went into seeing them with already a pre-conception of them. I think they are mostly reacted to because they are good! True some might be that it's a female band, but then how many all female rock band have you seen in the western world within the last decade or more? L7? Maybe? I'm not positive they all female anymore. I've seen female fronted but not the whole band. Also, none of them as skilled. As soon as I first saw them I was hooked. I haven't had that from a band in many years and not nearly has many songs. So far they have more songs I love than any other and I'm NOT young lol. They have a good rock sound, more complex and interesting than many others. And with more skill! I recommend seeing Onset live just to see how skilled. Domination as mentioned is fantastic.

Do not bother about fans' ruffled feathers! I am a BIG fan of the band but I have enormous respect for honesty! Fans too often forget good manners even with such sweet, shy and modest girls who explode on stage!
It takes more than one gig to make an opinion. I loved my first sighting but I was not blown away (too difficult as I am too heavy), but I have come to like them more and more along and probably deeper than fans who would not accept anything else!
You are on the right tracks and enjoy your journey! It promises to be a long on!

Not a new sound (70's-90's Hard Rock/Metal). Their composition, execution, sound engineering, and on-stage performances of their music is the "BIG WOW" factor. You just listened to their most simple and mellow ROCKIN' song, by their standards. Although their music is original and new, it feels very familiar and fun. Many 50+ age fans, along with all the rest. Try and find a throwaway song that feels like time filler.

BAND-MAID is a rock band.. nothing ambiguous about that. they're damn good at what they do. anyone who's into rock probably isn't going to be hearing some crazy ground-breaking stuff here(maybe arguable). for me, what's impressive about the band is how prolific they are(like around a hundred songs in 6 years?), how well they work together, how they constantly dare to change things up, and how the quality never falters. top that with an incredible live show, with the joy of performing and enjoying each others' company on clear display.. each new release blowing past any expectations i could have.. the goofy personalities and apparent lack of poor attitudes(maybe they just hide it really well).. -they're a very earnest band. that's how i would describe them and their overall sound. while they stick to fairly short songs, and usually to a somewhat standard song structure(not so much this song), i've come to see that as how imposing constraints can drive creativity.. as they do a heck of a lot within that framework. would still love to hear em go full prog.. to witness BAND-MAID's Six-Degrees of Inner-MoeMoeKyuun
i still listen to a lot of other bands and genres.. but BAND-MAID's got that secret mojo. their music never fails to make me feel good.. and i am still waiting for that 'sophomore slump'.

Forget they're all female. Forget they're dressed as maids. Know that two members (Misa - Bass, Akane - Drums) are classically trained pianists and musicians who studied at the Tokyo Academy
of Music while Kanami, the lead guitarist, has also been playing piano since the age of 3 or 4 but is concert standard. Almost unbelievably, given her skills, she only switched to guitar about
10 years ago! They all have superb musical ability as well as passion, a lack of ego and the drive to play real, in yer face, Rock which is why they are THE best live Rock band on Earth right now. OK, now that's explained, you can go back and marvel at how cute those outfits look and how incredibly beautiful all the band members are.
The only band I've seen that is playing live like bands I went to see in the 70's, such as Led Zeppelin or Sabbath or Zappa. Real guitars, drums and bass played loudly and with passion as well as powerful Rock vocals with not an autotune in sight. They've revived the classic Rock sound and given the genre a much needed kick in the ass, as that other superb Japanese band Babymetal have done for Metal. Future reactions I'd recommend, as they really shine brightest live, would be from the same concert as this one is, which was released as a DVD in April. FREEDOM: th-cam.com/video/FHpuEqMAcDg/w-d-xo.html , CHOOSE ME: th-cam.com/video/HcqitbXgigU/w-d-xo.html , DOMINATION: th-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/w-d-xo.html and WONDERLAND: th-cam.com/video/x4hxLeHbqZo/w-d-xo.html , though they have superb music videos too and so maybe have a look at their first one, THRILL: th-cam.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/w-d-xo.html . Play wouldn't have been my first choice of song to react to, or as a suggested introduction to the band, though as you say, it is a good fun rock song. I haven't listened to much rock music since about the mid-90s. I kept putting off checking out BAND-MAID but eventually clicked play on Domination live (14/2/20) earlier this year and was hooked before it had finished. I then went on a bit of a spree, watching lots of B-M videos and before I'd finshed I'd downloaded all their albums from itunes. I now listen to the band every day (or at least watch new reaction videos). I can't remember the last band that I even listened to every week for more than a month or so.
I don't care that I don't understand the lyrics - the songs sound good without me knowing what they are about - they are full of hooks and hardly anything is repeated - verse 2 rarely sounds like an exact match for verse 1 etc, and their live versions introduce solos and new introductions etc. I don't care about the maid outfits - I don't see them when I'm listening to the band via my phone at work, or on headphones at my PC. There is only 1 song I sometimes skip past when I listen to them, and that is the 1 that for me sounds the least like a BAND-MAID song - The Dragon Cries. I don't hate it, but I have to be in the mood to let it play right through. It isn't a bad song in any way but it just isn't BAND-MAID for me - though lots of fans do like it a lot. BAND-MAID for me are greater than the sum of the parts - they are very talented musicians, a very tight-knit group of friends, and they have a LOT of fun when they play live and that energy/vibe seems very rare these days - and thinking back, possibly always was. They put a smile on my face and have pretty much kept me sane through this year's happenings.
They are not for everyone (no artist(s) ever are), but I think they really do deserve to be better known than they are. Unfortunately most folk I know won't even give them a chance because they don't speak Japanese, or because they don't like rock music, or they think its all about their look rather than their musicianship/songs, and I suspect that bias against their music is inherent across the world. People tend to stick with what is familiar to them and radio/TV takes that to even more narrow parameters nowadays. On the plus side, the likes of TH-cam/Spotify etc does make music from elsewhere available that we'd never hear otherwise. I hope you'll give at least another couple of songs a try (even if you don't react to them) and hope you enjoy them, even if BAND-MAID don't go on to become your favourite band.

I disagree that it was an "honest" reaction. No, it wasn't the phony ZOMG THEY'RE TOTES THE AMAZINGEST after the first 20 seconds that you get from a huge percentage of moron reactors in it for subs/views, especially recently, but this guy had a clear mandate he set from the outset and he planned on fulfilling it regardless of what he thought of the song. Beyond the male feminist stuff, which he's not entirely wrong on so it's a shame it came off preachy and wokescoldy, but he also wanted to prove that he's somehow more refined than the fans who excitedly hype up bands at hyperbolic levels, which, you know, is what excited fans do. The type of pre-hipster asshole that would say "Slash sucks he only plays three chords" back in the day to prove to his buddies that he's cooler than them. It's petty and lame. So we get, "yeah they're good and all but i'm not, like, blown away man" schtick. He was more concerned with playing down the response for I guess some kind of reactor cred points than he was with giving any type of true analysis or gut level reaction. He offered no critique or musical analysis, just an intentionally pithy point about them being good but nothing special to show he's "not one of those guys". At least the fake a-holes pretend to be having fun.

@@JADK7507 When i said honest i only meant that it wasn't phony, like that Mr.Rock n roll dude for example, that type of reaction. And i do agree with you, i think he had his mind set from the get go, even if he loved the song he wouldn't show it, which i find really weird.
I also agree with you that i would have liked to see some sort of musical criticism instead of just "they are good but nothing amazing", especially since in my humble opinion this is the best rock band out there, but then again i totally admit im a full Band Maid fanboy (same thing with Lovebites) even if i just discovered them both like 4 months ago. I grew up on System of a down, slipknot, metallica, Sum 41, Avenged Sevenfold, Blink 182 that kind of stuff and none of them come close to the musicianship of Band Maid/Lovebites (again, just my opinion). Band Maid's formula is just too dam good.
But hey at the end of the day if this type of attitude from this reactor continues ill simply move on to other reactors that don't let themselves be influenced because they don't want to be seen as "one of those guys" as you said. English is not my native language but i hope you get what i mean. Stay safe!

When I finally did hit Band Maid, well I haven't stopped since - listening and smiling! Their sound and esthetic (other than the outfits) reminds me of discovering rock music as a teenager and really enjoying music in a lot of different forms. It is cool that the whole "idea and sound" is their own. I appreciate your honest reaction, and I agree pretty much with all of that. I'll second Marco's statement though to listen to a few more tracks, as it'll take that to appreciate a few of the following factors. 1) Their songwriting and arranging is in my view what really sets them apart - as they can crank out fun rock songs in bulk that incorporate enough complexity of arrangement to keep you coming back. 2) The combination of how fun their songs are combined with their musicianship. I'm a huge BM fan, but I've never been one of those that claim that any of their players are the best guitarists, drummers, bassists of all time. The are however, all very good and you'll see more of that in songs like Domination Live 2020, Onset 2018, etc.
While a really good song, this version of Play (just my opinion) is not one I'd recommend because of mixing issues with lead guitar especially, and the fact that it's one of their few songs which really don't have any instrumental solos of any length. So, as a Maidiac I am glad you think that trying out a few more of their songs is a good idea, and I like all of Marco's choices too. Bottom line, there are bands that are so good it boggles the mind (like the Aristocrats), but they can sometimes play music that seems dedicated solely to displaying their virtuosity rather than entertaining. The maids can get really addictive, because they will make you happy whether you want to be or not!

The point to people's excitement is that this is a band that could hold their own back in the 80s 90s - which will be more evident when you listen to their broader catalogue and realize they're not a one or two song trick pony. (I seem to recall your hesitation in listening to Nightwish if I remember correctly - I would say Nightwish and Band-Maid are the best one two punch discovery bands on TH-cam in the last couple years.

Its their music- fun, accessible but technical and very well written. For those familiar with the Japanese rock/metal scene, all female bands aren’t much of a ‘shock’ factor as they have been around since the early 80s. Neither is their musical prowess as there are many arguably more proficient ones among their peers, Infact its rare to find Japanese bands with subpar musicians.
What makes BM standout imo, is the whole package. Great musicianship, energetic live performances, excellent songwriting and of course, pretty ladies doing it, just gives it that extra icing on the cake.
Hype can sometimes be bad but I don’t see anything wrong with it when it delivers. And BM definitely lives up to their hype.

Welcome aboard, Joe. You are embarking on (along with many others - 90 million YT hits!) an awesome hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Consistency (nearly 100 songs with new album, “Conqueror”), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destine for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off the rails spectacular.
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 50 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: th-cam.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/w-d-xo.html Their later songs drive even more - Rin’ne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE and Smile... or more punky like Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series! And many are represented with over 30 well produced music videos. th-cam.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE concerts such as Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (“Domination” th-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/w-d-xo.html), ZEPP 2018, Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids. Here’s three of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues. The first taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: th-cam.com/video/__1th7ctgMo/w-d-xo.html, the second taken by JT Dayo in LA: th-cam.com/video/4uIYBkAybCI/w-d-xo.html, and third, JOSER8845 in LA: th-cam.com/video/usWZvlGGDSs/w-d-xo.html. If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
Band-Maid members are: (Ages are best est.).
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements, melodies and High Priestess mediator between the Gods (Band Members) and the masters and princesses (Fans). At 26 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Leader) as Miku calls her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away the persona. Her charisma, performance and voice focus the experience.
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 28 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kurrupo! No, no, no… KURRUPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Naw-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 29 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 29 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumRilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Assassin" - Bass, 27 years old. A sullen, barefoot, dark spirit driving her 5-string bottom-end to hell and back, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. The Mysterious One literally kills it… every note.. uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!

Not every band is made to wow. Some make music that appeal more to the masses. Judging this band on only this song is sacrilege, they play all kinds of fusions of rock , punk and metal. Even the greats as Jimmy Paige have things to say about these ladies. I hope you listen to the diversity of the music this band plays . Try something a little more hard like the song RINNE. Drummer is pretty lethal. Good luck on your channel and please be always fair. A heads up though , you did come across at the end a bit jaded. I hope your not like some of these supposed retired musicians that never made it big and now they pass their lacking stage experience onto others they see doing well. These ladies have done more than what some have done in their whole lifetime as “musicians “ , and all that while they haven’t hit the age of 30 yet. There’s a whole lot more coming from them!! Another quick piece of Information on the band and their musical resumes . Each one of them are multi-instrumentalist. And are well versed in writing and reading music. They are the real deal. Like it or not. Those are the facts . Bye. 👋

It would be nice if you could gave Band-Maid a second chance. "Real Existence"(live 2018, on their channel) is much more complex and shows better what they can do on stage (together). "Rinne" MV, is their hardest song. "Domination" and "Freedom" are rather straight Rock'n'Rollers with great middleparts . "Onset" ist fantastic, but instrumental, no singer.

The 1 part I dislike about this song is the "la la la" part. It's not bad, but I personally just don't like the sound of that part. I feel like the lyrics in this song are definitely weaker than their other songs. Play was originally an instrumental song, but they added lyrics to it. I've heard mixed reasons for why they added the lyrics, but I know the song didn't originally have lyrics.

    • @drogonr9318
      @drogonr9318 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think I read in an interview (it's been a while) the band wanted to add a song for precisely what you see in the vid: crowd participation. Kanami had an instrumental song already largely written (she's the golden goose), and so they just decided to appropriate it and add lyrics. They purposefully made the lyrics simple so any (e.g., foreign) audience could participate. (I also think the vocal lines are the weak link in this otherwise interesting and fun song).

First time I listened to Band-Maid I just felt this was not my cup of tea in the first few seconds of "Thrill" so I didn't even bothered listening to the whole song, although it sounded good and heavy. By then there was already a lot of fuzz about them being something "you HAVE to listen because is amazing" but right off it sounded like straight hard-rock and I had given up on hard-rock a long time ago, going further and further down the Metal/extreme Metal road, so, that first time I listen to them, I just skip/reject them. Last year, these ladies put out a record named "Conqueror" and I stumble upon "Blooming" - I was looking for something special, I was really bored with most everything, nothing in music was exciting anymore so I decided to give them a proper listen, and, to my delight, I was blown away... the way it starts, the drumming throughout the song, the singing, the chorus, Kanami's use of Wah-Wah, THAT moment made me think that I really should go back and re-listen "Thrill" and choose some songs to have a good handful of Band-Maid songs to listen more carefully, stop and listen what's going on. So I "grabbed" "Blooming", "Thrill", "REAL EXISTENCE", "DICE" , "Don't Let Me Down" and "Bubble" and very soon I became addicted to these songs... "REAL EXISTENCE" is probably THE song that sold me completely to them although at this point it's really hard to even choose my fav 10. It's been a while since I was a devoted fan of one band... Band-Maid is one of the best things I heard in my life...or maybe I should say that Band-Maid is one of the bands I most enjoyed in my life...
I completely understand that (even) "Play" doesn't make you go crazy. It's one song out of more than 90 they have. But it's also natural that this may not appeal to EVERYONE the same way it appeals to me. I know people that doesn't like Deep Purple but like Led Zeppelin... others are the way around, others (like me) like both of them and Black Sabbath too.
For me, Band-Maid is my fav band. Period. I love everything they did - from 2013's "Maid In Japan" to 2019's "Conqueror". All the songs... and I mean, ALL the songs, including the "B" sides and even "Ai to Jonetsu no Matador" 😅 are awesome. "Play" is one out a big, big bunch of great songs, I prefer the version of "Live at Shinkiba Studio 2017" but this one has this awesome intro to the song where, if listened carefully, you can detect the big influence Kanami has from Carlos Santana (and that goes further beyond playing the same guitar brand).
    Cheers!!

I think the main issue a lot of the posters are having, could have been avoid if you saved the comments until you listen to the video first. People get jumpy when someone "bad mouths" their favorite band 2 mins in to the video before even listening to it, but anyways I think you did a good job on the video overall and that most posters should just come down a little. As for the "shock value" the image is what gets you to click on the thumbnail but it is the music that makes you want to come back. Personally i forget most of the time that they are wearing maid outfits, instead i am more focus on how good the music is. If you were afraid the "shock" value just to a reaction with just the audio and the video off then it does not matter what the gimmic is, correct?

'Play' is a nice feelgood song but it's a hell of a long way from anything that might be considered their best. There was another live version (recorded at Zepp, Tokyo in 2018 I think) that was a reaction staple mainly because it functioned as a showcase for the prodigious talent of their bass-player, MISA. It was an unofficial upload though, and it has since been nuked.

There are other Japanese bands I really like but who will never equal the 'Maids for me I think because there's less arrangement/novel groove/instrumentation stuff going on I can appreciate and more lyrical content (although I love Miku's lyrics even in translation) that makes the song for someone who understands the words.
