I love seeing your Robin starring in your videos. Lovely to see the slow motion footage, they are such stunning birds🥰 I can't wait to see my two adopted mophead and lace cap hydrangeas come to life this year. Last year was tough for them due to the transplant, but also the heat. I'm hoping to give them a nice spot in the ground this spring, in our new garden and home. Just one more month until finalizing the paperwork and key exchange. My new garden will be in total around 130 square metre, instead of 64 square metre in total currently. I will definitely be digging my own wildlife pond on grass this spring. It will be the first time I even have grass🥰 I will do my best to film it all👍🏻👷♀️💧🎬📽

Your two hydrangeas will really enjoy being transplanted into nice ericaceous compost with plenty of water - watch them go! Make sure you take plenty of photos right at the start - before you’ve done anything. Progress pictures are so interesting and you’ll be amazed how quickly your new garden will develop.

Pauline - stand back from the pruners 😆 Certainly for the mopheads. I’m not an expert on the Limelight’s but they can be pruned back anytime - however I’m also waiting for March for them. 🌻

Sometimes our new growth appears a bit too early and then gets knocked back by late frosts. It's actually been a cold Winter this year - even a fair frost last night. Sue, your -8F is pretty cold, but I'll bet your Spring gets warm pretty quickly once it starts? 🌻
@@paultsworld it can’t come quick enough for me lol. Sometimes the daffodils will start coming back, only to have 5” of snow dumped on them. But they always manage to come back. Nature is awesome:)
The cuttings you started look terrific along the walkway. I have panicle hydrangeas and was not successful with my cuttings two years ago. I will try again this year!
I am so pleased with those cuttings - exciting to see how well they’ll flower this Summer. I did a number of paniculata cuttings as well - I’ll show them in a later video. Success rate was about 30%.

It’s their first winter in our garden (Switzerland Zone 7b/8a) and they look dead!🙈😅 In fact they are the only plants in the garden that show no buds at all yet. Later this month the hydrangeas will really start to produce large buds. In March we can feed them and prune back to an appropriate bud - I love going round the shrubs at that time Ellie. Robin sends his regards. 🌻
We are in the midst of an arctic blast here in my Massachusetts zone 6a garden. Temp is -7F but wind chill bringing it down to -25F. I tried covering all of my new hydrangeas but it was so windy and all the covering blew away. Time will tell what this short but very cold spell will do to my garden. Fingers crossed!

They are paniculatas? What a lovely selection of plants you have. So they are pretty tough hydrangeas and much hardier than the mophead and lacecap hydrangeas I showed in the video. They will bud much later and so won’t be as susceptible to the cold. It certainly was cold with your Arctic blast but I’d still be confident that by April/May they will get going for you. Good luck.
Hi Paul good to see some things growing Had some frost disasters including an old low spreading rhododendron. Lost half last year's new clematis, poor roots, and some new evergreen azaleas. Ordered bare root dahlias for pots;cross fingers!
Hi Wendy, I was wondering how the rhododendrons fared this Winter - I must go out and check mine. Shame about the new azaleas, I think mine are all OK.
That '05 chart had my zone 7b looking more like 8b. Many yrs ago it was so cold I thought I'd lost one of mine, cut it way back to dig up, never got around to it. The following yr it looked ok, then the next yr it was blooming again. It's in the upper 20'sF today, calling for upper 30's & 40's this coming week. Hope your weekend has been off to a nice.
In general many areas are ‘moving up’ the zone charts as the decades pass. I love it when ‘dead’ plants come back to life when you’re not looking. Have a nice weekend.
It seems as though the paniculatas bud a lot later - probably as a protection against the more severe cold. My paniculatas haven’t done much yet so I would say yours are right on schedule.
Hello, Paul. So nice to see you’ve put up a new video. Firstly, I am so jealous (in a good way) of your relationship with the little robin. I’ve been a bird-lover-watcher for over 6 decades and I’ve never even come close to hand-feeding one. So much applause to you for accomplishing that delightful feat! I have a few hydrangeas with plans to add more to my garden so this video about them was very well-timed and quite informative. It’s a nice sunny day here in central Kentucky, 43°F with a bit of a breeze which makes it feel quite nippy but I think I’ll put on a warm jacket, go outside and check out my hydrangeas to see how they are coming along. We had bitter cold weather at Christmas after a very warm fall and I’m not sure all my plants had sufficiently gone dormant prior to the extreme cold which came on very quickly. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. Best wishes to you and I look forward to your next video! 💚

Good Morning Paul, Gee your hydrangeas have budded up early. It is a good feeling seeing those strong buds form. Our hydrangeas are in full flower and we are having such as mild year, they are not getting scorched. It is the panniculatas I have a phobia about with pruning, how and when...I will drop that little hint 😆
Good day to you Margaret. Topsy turvy Winter - very clear night so had a light frost last night - those buds are remarkably tough. So nice to hear your hydrangeas are all in beautiful flower. I believe paniculatas are pretty bomb-proof - I am going to prune them all in March - I’ll make it up as I go along but I’m confident they will be fine with a light or heavy prune either in Autumn or Spring. I reckon people with big snow falls might be best pruning in Autumn so the branches don’t break - otherwise early Spring as they’ll immediately start developing stems and flower on those very same stems. The later in Spring you prune, the later they’ll flower. That’s my theory and I’ll put it to the test next month 😀🤞. I’ll do a video on that - I love deadheading/pruning hydrangeas, I find it a nice therapeutic time. Enjoy your Summer.
You are over the worst! mind you, you seem to have had the shortest winter on record. From where I'm standing your winter was very short. lol! You would know that ours was the longest winter ever, you'd know, because I couldn't stop complaining🤣We are having lovely weather. I have been watching some youtube videos on RHS Bridgewater, it looks lovely.
In the past, February has been able to produce some cold weather but with the days getter longer it feels a bit Springlike. I certainly was surprised at your Winter. I visited Bridgewater RHS when it was still being built. They have done a fantastic job and it can only get better as it matures.
Thank you so much for this, I think I’ve been over panicking. I live in the south uk. Most of my hydrangeas are the paniculatas. I have 4 macrophyllas and the zorro. I really hope I get lots of blooms on those. I was thinking of changing some to the endless summer mop heads. It’s says they bloom on old and new wood.
Your comment yesterday inspired this video. I wanted to show what my hydrangeas look like. Simply leave everything till March. Hydrangeas flower beautifully and with a bit of food and a compost mulch in March they’ll be set for the year. If you check over my Spring and early Summer videos of the last couple of years you’ll see the progression of the hydrangeas. They never fail to flower. 👍

Hello Paul, my Lace cap and mop head hydrangeas are now almost 6 ft tall - much too large for the foundation bed. What time of the year can I safely cut them back by 1/3?
That’s an interesting question Paulette. I’m not an expert but this is what I’d do: When you deadhead and cut back to a nice bud in Spring, see if there are buds ‘down there’ at the height you’re wanting - prune back to them. At the same time check if there are any buds growing right down near the base - if so, prune a number of stems right back to them. Immediately your shrub will be much shorter and set up for the years to come and I would expect you to get some flowers this year - although it’s not guaranteed. This would also be a good time to feed with ericaceous compost and maybe some chicken pellets. I’d water well if it’s dry. Do let me know what you do and how it responds. I’m sure you’ve pruned these many times but one thing I always have to remind myself is how delicate these buds are. It’s so easy to knock them off when reaching down inside the shrub.

I purchased a paniculata early last autumn. No sign of budding yet, crossing fingers that it will thrive when the weather is more spring like
It seems as though the paniculatas bud a lot later - probably as a protection against the more severe cold. My paniculatas haven’t done much yet so I would say yours are right on schedule.

Hello, Paul. So nice to see you’ve put up a new video. Firstly, I am so jealous (in a good way) of your relationship with the little robin. I’ve been a bird-lover-watcher for over 6 decades and I’ve never even come close to hand-feeding one. So much applause to you for accomplishing that delightful feat!
I have a few hydrangeas with plans to add more to my garden so this video about them was very well-timed and quite informative. It’s a nice sunny day here in central Kentucky, 43°F with a bit of a breeze which makes it feel quite nippy but I think I’ll put on a warm jacket, go outside and check out my hydrangeas to see how they are coming along. We had bitter cold weather at Christmas after a very warm fall and I’m not sure all my plants had sufficiently gone dormant prior to the extreme cold which came on very quickly. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

I’m very pleased you enjoy seeing me hand feeding the robin. Our British robins follow us round the garden picking up bugs and worms when we’re digging so it’s a natural progression to start hand feeding.

Good Morning Paul, Gee your hydrangeas have budded up early. It is a good feeling seeing those strong buds form. Our hydrangeas are in full flower and we are having such as mild year, they are not getting scorched. It is the panniculatas I have a phobia about with pruning, how and when...I will drop that little hint 😆
Good day to you Margaret. Topsy turvy Winter - very clear night so had a light frost last night - those buds are remarkably tough.
So nice to hear your hydrangeas are all in beautiful flower. I believe paniculatas are pretty bomb-proof - I am going to prune them all in March - I’ll make it up as I go along but I’m confident they will be fine with a light or heavy prune either in Autumn or Spring. I reckon people with big snow falls might be best pruning in Autumn so the branches don’t break - otherwise early Spring as they’ll immediately start developing stems and flower on those very same stems. The later in Spring you prune, the later they’ll flower.
That’s my theory and I’ll put it to the test next month 😀🤞. I’ll do a video on that - I love deadheading/pruning hydrangeas, I find it a nice therapeutic time. Enjoy your Summer.
You are over the worst! mind you, you seem to have had the shortest winter on record. From where I'm standing your winter was very short. lol! You would know that ours was the longest winter ever, you'd know, because I couldn't stop complaining🤣We are having lovely weather. I have been watching some youtube videos on RHS Bridgewater, it looks lovely.
In the past, February has been able to produce some cold weather but with the days getter longer it feels a bit Springlike.
I certainly was surprised at your Winter.
I visited Bridgewater RHS when it was still being built. They have done a fantastic job and it can only get better as it matures.

Thank you so much for this, I think I’ve been over panicking. I live in the south uk. Most of my hydrangeas are the paniculatas. I have 4 macrophyllas and the zorro. I really hope I get lots of blooms on those. I was thinking of changing some to the endless summer mop heads. It’s says they bloom on old and new wood.
Your comment yesterday inspired this video. I wanted to show what my hydrangeas look like. Simply leave everything till March. Hydrangeas flower beautifully and with a bit of food and a compost mulch in March they’ll be set for the year. If you check over my Spring and early Summer videos of the last couple of years you’ll see the progression of the hydrangeas. They never fail to flower. 👍

Hello Paul, my Lace cap and mop head hydrangeas are now almost 6 ft tall - much too large for the foundation bed. What time of the year can I safely cut them back by 1/3?
That’s an interesting question Paulette.
I’m not an expert but this is what I’d do:
When you deadhead and cut back to a nice bud in Spring, see if there are buds ‘down there’ at the height you’re wanting - prune back to them.
At the same time check if there are any buds growing right down near the base - if so, prune a number of stems right back to them.
Immediately your shrub will be much shorter and set up for the years to come and I would expect you to get some flowers this year - although it’s not guaranteed.
This would also be a good time to feed with ericaceous compost and maybe some chicken pellets. I’d water well if it’s dry. Do let me know what you do and how it responds.
I’m sure you’ve pruned these many times but one thing I always have to remind myself is how delicate these buds are. It’s so easy to knock them off when reaching down inside the shrub.
