Oh, I should probably explain Eclipse Skip again. If you don't already know, there is a skip for the 55-minute-long puzzle of sitting at the back of Theater doing nothing called Eclipse Environmental Puzzle, or commonly referred to as Eclipse EP in short. It was discovered around April 2022, but new strategies have made this skip ultra consistent to the point where it is even viable for doing the skip in a speedrun marathon. The skip revolves around two different strategies: save manipulation and pausing theater videos. Let's start with save manipulation. If you played the game during your playthrough, you may have noticed that as you progressed through the game, you end up with more than one save in your save files. This is an intended mechanic because what the game does is that for every 60 points (points being your total panel, environmental puzzle, and obelisk solves combined), the game splits your save into two saves, one for your current save, and one for your legacy save. This is to ensure if the player ever softlocks themselves such as getting out of bounds while Desert Vault is opening, the player can open the legacy save though with a bit of setback. Though, because the game is super "bug-free" that this feature is rarely ever used. The other strategy is pausing theater videos. This is actually really simple: go to one of the gray panels in Theater, draw the line but not solve it, and reload the save or open a new save. This will cause the videos to be paused at a certain time. This glitch is quite unique as this affects other save files as well. So, if you pause a video at the corona frame of the eclipse video, then all other saves will pause at the same corona frame.
To apply these into the run, my strategy involves racking up 59 points from the very beginning, then pause the eclipse video on key frames of the video. There is a setup discovered by runner gaesenpai who used 5 save files then go from Sun --> Corona --> Sun --> Corona until the video is in a specific state. Remember that I stated that if I pause at the corona frame, every other frame will also pause at the corona frame. Well, sometimes it does not happen. If I pause the corona frame after pausing at the sun frame, logically every other save should pause at the corona frame. However, one save will be paused at sun, even though it was supposed to be corona. This is me tricking the game into thinking it is still paused at sun, and it has not realized that it should be paused at the corona frame. So, why all of epileptic rapid pausing? Since the game has not realized it should be paused at corona, we need something to make it realize that. Luckily, darkid discovered that by overloading the game with a bunch of sound entities, the game not only resets the limit but also resets theater, making it realize it should be paused in corona. Previously, it would have taken a random amount of time for it to realize that, but hatkirby discovered that by holding the pause menu, we can speed up the process so that Eclipse Skip happens 6-7 minutes consistently. And I mean REALLY consistently. But waiting for a few minutes is too long, so I multitask holding pause and completing Town, which conveniently has Windmill which is ridiculously slow. By doing the majority of Town and running back to Theater, I only need to wait less than 20-30 seconds compared to the intended 55 minutes of waiting. And that's Eclipse Skip! It looks really silly and ridiculously complex, and it really is. Let me know if you have any questions about the skip!
I clicked on this video to use as a guide to find the remaining environmental puzzles. Imagine the emotional progression when I tried to do the eclipse puzzle just like I saw in the video only to find that it didn’t work, and also noticed the path the sun was taking… Oh, and when I tried to do the puzzle normally, my computer went to sleep about 30 minutes in and without thinking I clicked to wake it back up… pain Cool speedrun tho, good job on WR!
I remember watching speedruns of the game five years ago and thinking it was very unlikely there would ever be an eclipse skip. Fast forward to 2024 and you're telling me it's so consistent you can go for it in a marathon run? That's nuts. 99.8% who?
Hii! Im trying to speedrun this category and im pretty new with the game so can I have more info about the snipe at 32:52? I just wanna know if its a necessary snipe or something that can avoid for the time being while I practice the rest of the island. Thx man, you're clearly an inspiration for me with this game.
That snipe (known as Desert Shortcut Wall Snipe) is a quite precise glitch that opens up... well... Desert Shortcut. However, it does require a pre-run set-up where you lower your graphics quality (more specifically, setting "Geometry Detail" to "Low." This setting can be changed when booting up the game where a pop-up window tells you if you want to set your Graphic Quality to high, medium, or low. "Geometry Detail" can be found in the Advanced Settings). Because the snipe is difficult to see, I recommend using the Trainer Mod which can be found under the Resources in the game's Speedrun.com page. Upon using the mod, toggle the "Show entity solvability" to be able to see the starting point of that shortcut panel. Ideally, when you do the snipe, you rely on positioning your player in a corner and align your reticle over the background such that the starting point is at the middle of the screen. There isn't really a lot of documentation on this snipe specifically, so I hope this explanation works. As for the snipe being necessary, I am not entirely sure what you mean. In terms of speed, then yes. Taking the shortcut after grabbing Desert Elevator EP is far superior than riding the elevator or backtracking. In terms of if you are new to the category, then probably not. It is one of the more difficult snipes, but you can reroute by doing Desert after Symmetry but after activating the elevator, you grab Elevator EP then backtrack, which I would recommend for new players running the game. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide how you want to practice this category. It's nice to see new runners, and I wish you the best of luck on your journey!
what have I seen a ridiculous speedrun that i've never expect all puzzles included beat in a run i must have use too much internet today anyways good job
The Witness is so bug-free speedrunning is basciclly a matter of routing and snipping right? right?!? but jokes aside is incredible how far the community has gone both and the 100% and any%. Congratulations on the record and shout out to hatkirby on founding out so many glitches
To put it quite simply, my run was more polished than the previous runs. Sure, my 1:19 had a entirely different Eclipse Skip technique compared to this run, but that does not mean I was ultimately guaranteed to get the new world record. Hatkirby's 1:15:53 was really strong with the previous Eclipse Skip strat. The reason why I did the new Eclipse Skip technique is that it far less random compared to the previous strategy. Ultimately though, the most time saves are from improvement from the previous 1:19 run. Routing Cloud Cycle is a lot better. Doing Challenge went a lot better by 2 minutes. Of course, this run still has some blemishes, especially in Quarry. I struggled with Stair Snipe and Rock Line Reflection EP was being silly during the run (also what the heck was that). There are other areas in the run that I also had some slow-downs and obviously, being quicker and more accurate can also be an improvement for the run.
Why are you able to make the cloud EP at 43min15 since the cloud should have already be going away at around 42min30-ish ? Is it due to the constant pausing for the eclipse puzzle, "slowing" the clock of the game ?
Yes, the pausing does slow the clouds down, but also note that I was opening different saves during the Eclipse Skip set-up, which does screw up the consistent times for Cloud Cycle EP.

Congrats on playing so well you have to explain skips to people who only watch world records
It took me 40 hours to beat this game, and seeing it absolutely destroyed like this is super satisfying thx for posting this.

Actually insane. Congrats on the new WR!

My gosh, that is good
Is this done from memory or is there a cheat-sheet nearby? Very impressed wow dude 👏🏻

How do you even memorize all this puzzles? This is a crazy speedrun!
practice really. it sounds silly, but the more you do it the more you memorize it
How did you save 4 minutes vs your 1:19? Any techniques or better routing discovered?

I didn't know that the witness had mods! What mods are out there and where can I get them?
Is the speedrun run on the current patch? I was having issues with sniping and I am not sure if I am just bad lol
I think all speed runs are done on current patch
@@jatarokemuri4549 Thank you! (I learned I am just bad)
how do you have every puzzle memorized, that's crazy
