Is it real? And why is it on someone's lawn?

  • Somewhere east of nowhere, what appears to be a steam engine is parked on someone's front lawn. It's an actual locomotive-but it's no steamer-and its story is an odd one.

I'm changing my guess. Looking again at that wide and flat valve cover, I now think it could be a Big Block Chevy. Which is somewhat bizarre, as a small 4 cylinder engine would be more than adequate. And whatever it is, it has a Rochester Quadrajet 4 barrel carb on it!

I appreciate the hell out of these insights. I believe it was used to haul a small tourist train, though I'm not sure how long that train was or how many passengers might have been on board (or if there were any grades on the route, which couldn't have been too long). I'll assume 2x small cars, 25-50 passengers? 10,000 pounds to pull on rail, plus the weight of the cars themselves.
I'm not enough of a gear head to know if a 4 cylinder can pull that. My estimate is on the conservative side on what it might have hauled.

It was last used at Frontier Town in North Hudson, NY. Came up for auction not too long ago.

Ooo. I knew where it came from but - how long ago was the auction? I had assumed it was several years ago

Id also like to know where it ran. I'm looking for rail for my own train

Just a wild thought. I see it has the name Little Kenny on the side. Could this possibly have operated near Pittsburgh at the Kennywood Amusement Park. It's not next door but it's a possibility. If a Plymouth doesn't have a builder's plate they can often be found on the rear outer wall down near the wheels

Not too wild a thought - I've been near that amusement park a few times. I believe this one came from someplace in NY, though I'm waiting on some details. I'm hoping the Plymouth build list that's supposed to come online this year will shed some light on it. Otherwise I might knock on that houses door next time I'm up there.
I'll definitely have to look around the wheels more if/when I do drop by. I heard there's a plate in the cab I might have missed.

The frame is from a small Plymouth industrial locomotive that has what looks to be a gasoline motor out of a car that someone has fabricated a body to go over it that looks like a steam locomotive. It definitely did not come from Plymouth that way. The frame for sure is factory and possible the motor could be an original gasoline motor that came with it but the body is definitely home made.

Converted steam engine. Most are dieselized in large parks! Some modified tenders push loco.

So far as I know it was purposely built to look like a steam loco-though finding a build record for it has been a challenge.

Diesel engine....with spark plug wires. Looks like a small block Chevy. I'd just knock on the door. Dude is probably happy to show it off.

I might do that next time I'm in that area. I sent an email to a person who I'm 95% sure owns the property and didn't get a reply.

That engine, from what my sources say, MAY have come from Santa's Workshop 🎅 in Northpole, NY.
The equipment dealer down back of the house 🏠 could help ya.
