Shredder is not a tough boss. He can be easily beaten with any turtle as he's one enemy in the game that suffers from knockback damage when he's hit. He's quite anti climatic infact. If you don't have any throwing weapons to spam, just wait for him to drop down, and hop back up once he comes down, and just keep hitting him as he leaps back up. He will get knocked down and keep running into your attacks.

    • @Lastjustice

@@jacobpeters5458 No, Leo swings quickly and has a large area of coverage you can easily swing rapidly and not miss Shredder. It doesn't matter what hits him, he always staggers from the hits. It just takes longer than using Donnie who you could potentially miss time since he has a slower swing. Shredder isn't that fast of a boss, so you shouldn't have that much trouble landing your swings on him. It's not like he's a floating skull in Castlevania 3 or something that has a hard pattern to guess.

I like how your video is honest. You show mistakes instead of "Just speed run this without any issues, you should be able to beat the game in 1-sec and never take damage or die". Right now, I'm trying to show my son the difference between games with a timer and games without.
The scroll tip is really good. I'm one of those weirdos who beats games without using limited items, which is never a great strategy.

    • @Lastjustice

If you're trying show people how really play a game, showing a speed run isn't a great learning tool. Speed runs do alot of fragile strategies that new players shouldn't be pushing. They lack the knowledge pool of how bounce back if the speed run path goes south. Most players are better off being on more conservative paths which you can outlast the onslaught if you know where and what to farm. I am not as good at this game as when I was 12, and could swim thru the dam barely getting hit at all, but I farm my way thru this game in my rustiness. Knowing really is half the battle for this game.

    1) Complete the water level using the exact same pattern EVERY time...if you do this then the water level becomes easier but you still have to watch out for those pesky sea-weeds!
    2) WALK across single gaps (level 3 in front of the missiles).
    3) Get the scrolls in level 3.
    4) Take a note-book and right down the pattern (top, middle, bottom) of enemies when you need to jump across the gaps in the sewer right before rescuing Splinter
    5) Good luck with the moving spike walls before the giant mouser in level 4 (sorry can't help with this one).
    6) In level 5, if you commit suicide and use a continue then the Techno- Drome will ALWAYS be in the bottom left corner.
    7) Before you go for the Techno-Drome, load up ALL your turtles with scrolls from the warehouse in the top left corner.
    8) Inside the Techno-Drome, DO NOT go down through the floor spikes (unless you're trying a speed run). Instead, climb the ladder up and go the long way around. Power ups can be found behind the wall-mounted guns.
    9) In the yellow room of death before Shredder, AVOID the flying lasers by ducking down with Don and attacking with his staff. KEEP MOVING! Don't stop to kill them until the passageway gets VERY narrow. When this happens you MUST kill every enemy on screen. In the narrowest part of the corridor, you don't have to kill the sprite coming towards you, just duck down and let them come in and out of the screen.
    10) When you reach Shredder place yourself on the smallest platform in the boss area and keep knocking him down with Don...or you can use another turtle and spam Shredder with scrolls. DONE! (the easy-ish way)

There are areas of the game where you will be owned if you go through as Donatello because he is terrible at fighting groups of low to the ground enemies as Michelangelo or Raph are much better at protecting themselves from low to the ground groups also Donatello has a slightly larger hit window between his attacks. Donatello is still by far my favorite turtle in story canon and every video game, he just isn’t as great in comparison to the other turtles, as you hear often, imo. LOVED THE VIDEO! You know, even as a kid back 1991-1993 I could make it through the first two parts; even the dam didn't bother me much.
I never, ever made it past the third world. The difficulty ramps up considerably in that part, and as a kid with no guides, no internet, it can be rough. If and when you find the missiles, how do you use them (I thought back then that you'd use them similar to the shurikens, etc)? And once you realize you can use them in the turtle van, how do you know that you can shoot the barricades? Which barricades do you shoot? If you run out of missiles trial-and-error-ing this part, you have to go back and get more, likely taking a lot of damage. And that's not even touching on the later worlds lol.

The damn stage only stumped me as a kid for a week or so. I was way more stumped at the stage at night where you have to find the technodrome. I would always have to goto bed or something before I found the damn thing and shut the game off.
I did eventually beat it though. In the end the only game I never beat as a kid was Solstice.

I cannot believe I was ONE FREAKING LEVEL away from beating the game as a child.....and I gave up because I didn't know I was THAT close to winning.

Its not about it being "hard" its about when these games were released we didn't have access to what we have now. No guides or youtube videos we had Nintendo power and Nintendo power hotline for 0.99 a minute.
Now we have people reading the game code and speed running some of the hardest games in mere minutes. I remember it took me a long time to beat this game because I simply didn't know where to go or what to do I would run around for hours without dying once

I beat this game and I'll say this. There are a few segments where it's pure unfair BS and requires you to basically cheat by de-spawning enemies or full out knowing not to jump or half jump etc. Classic Nintendo unfairness but it's not hard. It's like knowing the location of a secret in Zelda basically.

Well, there are scrolls in the technodrome (have to go over a large Jump to the left where there is a gun turret on the wall). Those are the ones I usually use for the shit room near the end

  • @punkydudester3

i have been able to beat this game since 3rd grade. It took some time but it never felt impossible. 45 minutes is my average time. I can usually get through the damn with 1 or 2 hits, I have gotten through it without getting hit at all about 50% of the times I play. I always get the scrolls in the first house on level 3 in the sewer below it. I give them to mikey. I keep Donatello at high life often. Half this game is mainly just knowing where to go to save life & health. I use scrolls on megaturtle at the end of 3. I use donny a lot because of the 1 hit. Finding the technodrome is a little irritating because it's random of 3 places so I always choose the easy one first. Once in the technodrome I go left & stay high & up instead of dropping the down path. I find the scrolls in the technodrome & give them to Mikey again. Once in the last hallway where the astronauts are I inch forward & crouch when they appear & they will travel into the screen ahead & disappear. Every other enemy is a little robot & I use Donny in this hall to kill them but skip the astronauts. Get to the end & I use the scrolls with mikey on shredder. Not too fast or they just go through him without hurting him, just a medium pace before he can pull his mutant gun out. I didn't know about that duck trick on fighting the technodrome! If you pause while fighting the huge mouser only when the ball appears in his mouth, unpause & it will still show through his mouth & you can keep hitting it even though his mouth is closed. I had no idea about that super glitch in the technodrome either WTF! My way in the hardest hallway makes it completely easy & you don't need any scrolls. You only need donny or boomerangs. Do that same ducking when you first enter the hallway but after you run after the first 2 sets of astronauts using boomerangs or donatello. It isn't that hard really once you have it down. This is still one of my favorite games to play every year since 1988. That was a magical time, all my friends had an NES after a couple of years & since me & my brother had a paper route we rented games as much as we could every weekend. We could have bought 1 a month with our money or rent like 2 or 3 every weekend, so we rented.

I remember beating Shredder with just Ninja stars before. The game is hard, but honestly no more harder then most beloved NES games like Megaman or Castlevania. In fact, those seem harder to me, as I can breeze through TMNT still without losing a turtle, but not those games.
