This video should be mainstream! Any audi fan or owner should see it, before they misplace the “haldex” label on quattro ultra…. Great video, great presentation, pity Audi’s not doing more like this so people better understand their technology!
People have been badmouthing the Quattro ultra system, but it’s actually really good. You don’t need full-time all-wheel-drive going straight on a highway on dry pavement. Total waste of money if that was true.
I own Audi with crown gear differential and test drove one with quattro ultra. It is so sad that permanent AWD with crown gear differential is now replaced with Ultra-Quattro system that is essentially front-wheel drive until computer decides. No matter how you look at it - it is a reactive system, very similar to cheap systems used on RAV4, CRV, and many other predominantly front wheel drive cars. This system does have have more under-steer, feels more unpredictable in the corners, and it is unclear can in ever send more torque to the rear wheels than to the front wheels? Crown gear differential could send up to 85% of the torque to the rear wheels, making cars feel sporty, handle well in the corners and fun to drive. Even though the design of this model is beautiful, I guess my current Audi is the last one that I will own.
The 1986 version could change the drive in a hundredth of a second and you think it’s now worse, it’s about saving your fuel bill and only giving 4WD when you really need it.
I fully agree... Though the crown gear was only on the RS5. Not sure why Audi didn't use it on others because it was lighter and faster than the "regular" center diff. I guess that made it more expensive. But yes having the AWD with a more rear bias definitely made recent Audis the most fun they had been. I find this disappointing. Might as well bring on the non combustion engines. Hopefully those will have more rear bias again.
@@Amidat Buying a Q5 for my "family" vehicle and this system will be just fine. It is helping me make my decision to keep my sport package 2011 A4 though with 6 speed manual. 46,000 miles, this car will be a rarity in short notice. It will be my "throw around" car.
it's "cool" technology... but sorry - I love driving - so I prefer rear bias. I love AWD the most.. Even more than RWD... But I want a rear wheel default bias. It's cool if the system switches to FWD while coasting on the highway... But I like my current Audi's feel of putting 85% of the torque to the rear axle during certain driving. You CAN tell the difference.
If you put ESP in the limit mode, you'll override the quattro ultra system to use 50-50% split all the time. I doubt you can get any more AWD than that...

Wow! Thanks for a great video. Much more informative than a 100 bloger's videos.
How do I get that app on my iPad and interface it with my car?
Very good explanation of the system.
Can the public get hold if the app he’s using to show Quattro activity?
Thanks - great video - very informative. It's helped me understand how the quattro Ultra system operates in my new Q5.
What is the app he's using? is it publically available?
Very informative video - thanks a lot! It is pleasure to attend a lecture from Head of Dev AWD :)
Seems good, I just wish there were subtitles to help me understand this engineer.
Does Audi A4 allroad b9 3.0 TDI has ultra or previous gen all time quattro?
From 270 hp you get the torsen and zf gearbox. That is a bmw😅
Just the unique video! So many common misconceptions about Ultra in the Internet. And here is the truth....

To be honest, quattro ultra has got less understeer than the crowngear diff! Much fun to drive!

@@markbullmore241 you don't spend money on an audi to quibble over 1mpg.... if fuel economy is that much of an issue - then we would buy a Honda Fit.

The Quattro Ultra system feels very AWD to drive. It can send 75% to the back. It's not att all like the Haldex systems.
@@ahlsn7346 not 75% - it’s 50 - 50 at most

@@ahlsn7346Actually it can send 85% to the rear. This is straight from Audi Media Center.
Quattro Ultra can and will send 85% to the rear. This info is straight from Audi! Please look it up!
Subtitles please, i can only hear mumbling.
I got a stomach ache hearing this person maybe engineer speak English.
