If I am a middle-aged, childless woman in the 21st century that doesn't believe in the existence of God or love, then....I lie. When I hear music and the extraordinary bliss of these musicians, I KNOW that all that I didn't think I believed in....EXISTS!
All of the music projects he has put together are nothing short of remarkable. I've enjoyed teaching from his resources. Not only that, he has been resourceful (as a musician) in getting the Ford Company to support a musical project. We need more of that in global society to bring music back to the people....so that the people own it, and not the multi-nationals!
I must agree this is absolutely gorgeous. It is indescribable. You always know when a piece is awesome. You can replay it numerous times and never get tired or annoyed from it. What a masterpiece. Thanks to Assad Brothers and Yo-Yo Ma...
Both guitar and cello have lots of potential to express vibrating human feelings. And a boy's sentiment, most likely about his first love, is so delicately and fluidly rendered by the trio.
Simply delightful... All my thoughts are floating in the air full of silences and melodies, all of my dream come true at least for few moment. That make me feel the wonder of our pure nature... Regards
The composer of "Menino" ("Boy", in english) is Sergio Assad. He is one of those two guitarists, that seems to be twin brothers, but aren't. Sergio Assad is a great composer and made a lot of songs in brazilian typical musical understanding.
Brazilian brothers Sérgio & Odair Assad, everywhere they went, garnered enthusiasm and admiration, measuring their talent and prodigious personality. About Mr.Ma, no words. Just great. He plays on the cello who once belongs to Jacqueline du Pré.
i wish yo yo ma would have a concert here in the philippines. and that he'll bring the entire troupe of musicians he collaborated with for the Obrigado Brazil album.
beauty moves some of us to be strengthened in our conviction- but I do not think beauty itself can be the sole justification or source of faith... that has to come from somewhere else. But here is no place for such talk, and Yo-yo ma is wonderful :)
tatally agree! Allthough i find this song sublime, for me (a colombian guy) his style sounds too... strange for a samba, bolero or bosanova. The soul of tango IS an exception, but I think that's because tango doesn't use special smoothness like bossa nova. I find this anyway strange, 'cause his traditional skills on oriental music i.e tiger and dragon, the silkroad proyect and the traditionall japanese sounds for me awsome!
that's funny. i feel no such compunction to be led to a god Ive never believed in by beauty, even of this caliber. so i cant relate in that direction. but i must say, to know this was crafted by men, it has restored some of the faith i thought id lost in my fellow man long, long ago... Ive always felt like that about music, though...
@dawg00000 I only meant that Yo Yo Ma has the right to choose the kind of MUSIC he prefers. Music isn't about race. Of course, a musical style may come from a particular culture, but the music itself transcends any culture. You can't lay a guilt trip on people for preferring music from another culture. By the way, if you find Yo Yo Ma's musical choice "boring," why are you here listening to it?
@dawg00000 I'm well aware that the hip hop culture is much larger at this point than that of classical music. But hip hop music will probably have about the same lifespan that Big Band music had in the '30s and '40s. The best classical music will endure. But this is not the place to debate that. People post music for others to enjoy. If I were the poster, I'd remove all comments that were not about the music. Your judgmental, angry comments have no place here.
well supposely the assad brothers composed the majority of the piece however it be sheer stupidity to assume yo yo ma didn't give thought into or opinion to the music. you have to remember yoy yo ma went to brazil to broaden his music knowledge and wanted to play with the best of the best, these to gained great respect while still in school and there for are not simply musicians but composers as well.
@dawg00000 What an absurd comment! Why should anyone be a prisoner of his culture, with no free will to choose to express outside that culture? No one has an obligation to "represent" whatever culture he is raised in.
@dawg00000 oh my word.......you are hilarious........the very idea that YOU know the only true form that music MUST take is a sure sign that you are DEAF to music ........what does hegemony have to do with beauty?
dog zero... Have you nothing better to do than to go from song to song copying and pasting the same stupid comments... Go find some Erhu music to listen to and stop posting here... If you don't like his music, why are you listening to it...
@dawg00000 Your comments under this video are equivalent to attending a concert and loudly voicing disdain for the type of music being played. It's extremely rude and inconsiderate, by ANY cultural standard. Only an a**hole would do that. If you don't like the music being presented, then stay the hell away. People post music for the enjoyment of those who like it. Only a self-centered pig would force himself on others who came to the "concert" to enjoy the music. I'm outta here.
The Assads are one of the most talented and eclectic guitar duos around. Bravo!

I guess one more thing that makes Yo Yo Ma a better musician is his personality~~~~love his smile all the time~~~~

I'm sorry, but that was funny about the "twin brothers". They look like they come out of a tin soldier factory.
Love the song!!! And the comment!
meraviglioso
"Insert witty comment about the 16 people who disliked this video."
Sheer genius on both instruments. Beautiful.
Sorry, cant keep my head on straight these days. I think the name of the album/dvd is "Obrigado Brazil".
I was surprised at the negative comment. I did not hear a mistake and after all we are listening right?
Fantásticos virtuoses!

Is yo yo ma's montagnana or stradivarius cello?
!!!!!!
@dawg00000 this isn't even european classical music >_> this is Brazilian music.
@meaning1 That cello is $2 million :)
that would definitely be the Strad
yo yo plays so pashionetly
