  • The Kronk Gym in Detroit, Michigan is a legendary boxing institution. As a beacon of hope in a tough part of a tough city, there was bound to be trouble now and again.
On this episode of the Knuckles and Gloves podcast, Patrick Connor and Aris Pina remember a trio of the Kronk Gym's troublesome fighters from the 1980s.

I grew up with the Chamber brothers and Milt McCory in Detroit. And with the rebuilding of Detroit, the Kronk Gym and the Motown Musem should be focal points in terms of history and appreciation.

HAVNT listened at all yet just saw the name of the podcast and I hope you tell the tragic story of Ricky Womack ( who for some reason I've always been intregued with he had everything and for some reason threw it all away,I'm Australian and Tommy Hearns is one of my favourite fighters of all time also one of my friends who I watched fight and come up as an ammy was Pierre Karam who Manny Steward saw as a very young kid and took him to the KRONK to turn pro and he started out great went 8 or /9/0 then lost by a cut while ahead then similar in a rematch if just for a bit of luck he could've been a real success story! I also hope you talk about Bernard " Superbad" Mays The KRONK should have a museum dedicated too it from Kenty right up to KLITSCHKO ,also the Mc Cory brothers so many great fighters and story's but I always wanted to do a book on Ricky Womack one day! ( Or ide luv to see someone do a documentary on his life or a full length movie! His story as with Mathew Franklin( Saad Muhammad) are just unbelievably tragic storys

Great job I hope in part 2 you go into detail about "Superbad" Mays & Ricky WomackThey say that ,Superbad used to beat up guys like Hearns & McCullum in Sparring almost daily!!! as well as everyone else at the KRONK and d other gyms and Ricky Womack was the number 1 ranked LHW in the USA and had beaten Holyfield a couple of times and many people say he was robbed of his place in the Olympic s by being beaten twice by Evander in the box offs both by Dec one that was very close and could've went either way so just imagine the money and fame Holyfield got but for a toss of a coin that may have been Womack! But never the less he was still signed to a lucrative 6 figure sign on bonus to turn pro with Manny and the KRONK given a brand new car and apartment and spending money and he was about 9/0 as a professional when he turned it all to shit!! By doing what he did!( & Up until the day he died he could never ever give a reason why he did it!?????) I'll let you tell his story !!! but he came from the toughest & poorest & hardest of upbringings and almost made Tyson look like a choir boy he was a rough an tough kid who would even bully other boxers on trips away! But his story is still super Sad as is Superbad who some say was the most talented of all The KRONK fighters I really hope that you go in depth on both these two fighters in your part 2 of The KRONK an true crime! Great work guys! Cheers from Big KENNI from down Under Melbourne Australia! Hands up chins down keep punching guys!🥊🥊🥊( You definitely have a new listener!)
