Actually, no. At least from my impression from reading about him. He wasn't really worried, and his eyes give that half sleepy/half awake indifference. Growing up his home was always family moving in or out, his mother din't care who worked as long as somebody bought groceries. At age 2 he fell and hit his head, his mother brought him to the doctor, who said ''he has a concussion, look at his eyes'' his mother replied '' no, he always looks like that''. He and his brother were always getting into mischief. When his brother went with him across the states to California where their married sister lived; he told his brother 'We'll be hopping trains, when we jump off the cops will be shooting but just keep running ---don't look back'' Well Bob jumped off and ran but his brother chickened out and stopped, got arrested and spent a few months in jail or working on the roads sort of chain gang. After he was released he finally made it to California and found his his sister's house. There was Bob relaxing in the tub, looked at him and said ''What took you so long?''
The perfect noir star. He believes in something - and can deal with a world that doesn’t. When he is a villain ( Cape Fear, Night of the Hunter) he is the scariest, cause all that tough quality is in the service of evil. For me, hands down, the coolest guy to work in Hollywood, ever.
Robert Mitchum is my great grandfather. Thank you for this video. I never got to know him before he passed, and these videos help me feel like I kind of do.
I love all of their stories about Robert Mitchum . My favorite story is his son telling the story about Elvis coming to their house when he was growing up and playing the piano . I've heard another story about Robert Mitchum going to Elvis' dressing room in Los Vegas . They said Elvis liked those cowboy movies when he was growing up . I can see how everyone loved him . It's so strange when you have seen that face your whole life , but you never met him in person ever . Seems like he's a part of the family , because his face is so familiar . Love this video !! Thank you for sharing this !!
Amazing actor! He could scare you silly, as in NIGHT OF THE HUNTER and CAPE FEAR, but he could also reassure you that you were safe with him, as in THE WINDS OF WAR and WAR AND REMEMBRANCE miniseries.
Back in the late forties and early fifties, my mom and I would watch movies from the local TV stations. That's when I 1st saw "his kind of woman", and I think I've seen it at least 6 times since. I have to see Ryan's daughter, the sun downers, others...
No chance. We live in a different age now. Have you read Baby I Don't Care? The biography of Mitchum? He was a very humble guy loved smoking weed or gage as he and Louis Armstrong called it! Night of the Hunter is a tour de force as is Heaven Knows Mr Allison with Deborah Kerr.
Amazingly wonderful man who had feelings, knew what he wanted, was no pushover, who was also very compassionate. Handsom too! Great actor! He was no robot! A man of his own. R.I.P. Robert. There will never be another you!💗👏👍✌
Thank you for presenting the Robert Mitchum we suspected but didn’t know. He’s always been my favorite and will continue on to be so. So few actors display what being masculine is. So many have little boy features all their lives that it’s sometimes difficult to play a mature masculine role. That definitely wasn’t true about Robert Mitchum.
Oh, gosh, oh gosh...so true! I detest Marlon Brando as the man he was and as a supposed "great" actor. I'm so glad Mitchum had that insight and put it to such perfect words.
@@victoriajarvis2260 Maybe should watch, 'LISTEN TO ME MARLON.'. Most Misunderstood Actor Ever. Brando was a child From Abusive Relationship, with a Mean and Nasty Father.
He, Robert Mitchum was nobody's fool. He had an instinct about people, and he didn't give a damn about what the Studio Heads thought. He could take them or leave them, and he mostly left them. That is why he didn't sweat it, when he got busted on the pot charge, and he said he was a Former Actor. Ha ha ha ha! He didn't get fired. Love it!
My first love❤. I was 12, and saw him in a movie, and said to my mom, I Love that man’. 😂. She said, you cant know you love him, yr only 12 yrs old. I said, well- i do. And have ever since, even tho he’s not here, im still’ in Love’ with him. What a ‘man’.. he had it all!
I always thought Robert Mitcham was a great actor, especially since I thought he was tough. I grew up watching reruns of his movies on a black and white television. He was one of my favorite actors.
I was working at the newly remodeled Desert Inn Hotel and Casino in 1978. Robert Mitchum was there to dedicate a plaque to Howard Hughes who had recently passed away. I think they were friends, but not sure! Hughes owned the Desert Inn along with 4 other hotel casinos in Vegas . As I was going to lunch, I walked thru the coffee shop, Robert Mitchum was sitting alone near the entrance. He was wearing sunglasses and just sitting by himself. I totally regret that I didn't stop at his table as I walked by, if only to tell him how much I admired his acting. But employees were instructed not to speak to celebrities so I kept walking. I told a waitress as I passed into the employees back Hall that Robert Mitchum was sitting alone at the table by the entrance wearing sunglasses. She didn't believe me at first, but realized that it really was him!
Robert Mitchum also had a quality that its extremely rare, which was that he had a photographic memory. He could read an entire script just once, and have it completely memorized! To me that is incredible! He never wasted anybodys time with re-takes. Other people will verify that. I also loved his mellow and cool personality, never any histerical melodrama with this cool dude. I Love him!
When Mitchum got arrested for smoking pot - it was almost certainly 'the end of his career'. But the next day in newspapers all across the country they reported what Mitchum said when the cop asked him his profession. "Former movie actor." The whole country laughed at that and if anything it enhanced his 'bad boy' reputation. .
I said in the '70s as soon as the government figures out how to make money off of pot they will legalize It. According to a CPA I know you can grow as much as you want but you will get 50% in taxes of your profit to the government. And there you go, government doesn't give a crap about you and your well-being they just want their money

And he definitely deserved to have gotten some Oscars for his performances! I've noticed that Actors that definitely deserved to get that award, Never got them! Those awards are rigged in my opinion!
Probably my favourite actor of all time, he made it seem so effortless. And so humble about what he did. He said of acting that it was just showing up on time, knowing your lines, your marks, and that's it. But few were as natural and gifted at it as he was.
My father-in-law abandoned at age 11. Box cars all over Canada and U.S.A. Recited poetry and ballads learned from other hobos (always said hobos worked their way, weren't beggers, bums) He died at 94 2001 and was still reciting. When he met his wife of 63 years it was forever home and called her "mama", but nothing unmanly about this gentleman. More zest for life than 20 something years olds now days.
Oh yes! My two favorite Philip Marlowe actors are Robert Mitchum and Gerald Mohr. Look for Gerald Mohr's rendition of Philip Marlowe, and I think you'll like it. He has a great voice, and attitude or personality!
Right on the nose there Beth. My Dad told me a story of how he asked my Great Grandfather, who served in the Navy in WWII, if Mitch's portrayal of a skipper was accurate in "The Enemy Below". Great Grandpa apparently leaned back, his arms behind his head and looked to the ceiling and said plainly; "JD was the same way." That's enough for me!
I'd also like to thank you for all the stars that he worked with. It was fun seeing how they were there and how they are now. You covered this quite nicely

Loved him in Winds of War and War and Remembrance. Really enjoyed the love story of “Pug and Pamela” played by the gorgeous actress Victoria Tennant. He really rocked a navy uniform even in his later years.
I was only 12 when I saw Not as a Stranger. I am nearly 80 but that film made a stamp on my memory. I thought it was wonderful.. I saw him later in Ryan’s daughter. He had what it takes ❤️
He was one of a kind! He never gave a bad performance. I watch him in all his movies! Wow what a guy! A man in every since of the word! That deep voice! That i don't give a damn attitude and that swagger! And boy could he act. He never won an Oscar. Robert Mitchum is easily one of our greatest actors-- and not just an American one -- and he and Richard Widmark are my favorite American actors. Mitchum always seemed to "walk through" his parts, but he always held your attention. There was never anyone else in the room, but Mitchum, always "nailed it", with no apparent effort. And that's what "art" is.
Robert Mitchum acted like he just didn't give a fuck. It was his nonchalant way of performing that made him so damn good, special. He reminded me so much of my dad who went through life with a kind of carelessness that what ever went on, what ever happened, was not up to him. The other guy had to take the first punch but then dad, Robert, would respond in kind. Amazing man, terrific actor.
He showed up at Elvis penthouse one night barely announced. He had a bottle of liquor and a script. He wanted Elvis to play in a movie with him. He told him he felt like Elvis was right for a part in a movie with him about racing. Elvis was already booked up for a couple of years but he really liked Elvis. They became friends and visited back and forth. Elvis had That same chiseled good looks and he told Elvis you’d be perfect for the part of my son. He tried to figure out how to get the studios to get Elvis into his movie. But That was colonel Parker’s fault. Elvis would have been great in a movie with Robert Mitchum. He told Elvis you don’t have to sing. Elvis loved that.
@@gracieg7601 Yes but one thing; usually you don't see 2 top notch celebrities for the price of one ticket. RHO was sort of a lower ranking studio, less pay, less prestigue,. Robert Mitchum and Burt Lancaster are the most under rated actors of our times. In my book "Heaven knows Mr. Allison" is a master piece ,mind you that the whole movie is a dialogue of two persons. How many movies or actors have you seen than can keep you glued to the screen with just two actors. A great tribute to a great actor.
I totally agree....."Heaven Knows" is one of my FAVORITES. The "delicate flower" (Deborah Kerr)...and the "tough as nails" MARINE. If Mitchum had not been 'available' for this role...Lee Marvin would (probably) have done a 'great' job too. Another movie which consisted of only 2 characters was "My Dinner With Andre". I believe (both) Siskel and Ebert gave it a "Thumbs Up".
"Loyal to his wife..." ??? You need to read his biography. The man was married to his high school sweethearts: she stayed faithful - at least he sometimes came home. Big time carouser with the women. Almost left wife and kiddies for Ava. - But who wouldn't. The man was not a loyal husband. He said: "I'm a lousy husband, but a wonderful father." I'm sure women threw themselves at him.
In my opinion, Mitchum's greatest role was as the Marine in "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison." It perfectly reveals both sides of the man, the hard and the vulnerable, in a truly unforgettable film. When you include the luminous and perfectly cast Deborah Kerr, you have a classic movie of tremendous pathos and irony. Catch it.
Yes, the scene in which he begs for forgiveness from Deborah Kerr's nun the morning after he finally verbalized the I-need-a-woman-now sexual longing he had been able to suppress while with her on the island. Simply irresistable to see effortless vulnerability in eyes, voice, and body language from a charismatic and strong-featured American male actor.
@@davidallen508 What was she supposed to call him, "Jarhead"?? You obviously know nothing about how a proper nun would speak, much less how to speak to a king. You could lose your freaking HEAD for addressing royalty in such a disrespectful way.
My favorite Mitchum film of all time has to be, "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison." It encompasses ALL of his greatest attributes... honesty, integrity, guts, and humanity, all in one unforgettable role. Directed by John Huston and co-starring Deborah Kerr, it just doesn't get any better.

Apart from Gregory Peck RM is my favourite actor. Self contained yet not not unaware of human frailty.

Seriously?
@@dee_dee_place yeah, very much so
@@Uber_GoobTube Wow. Have you seen all his movies?
@@dee_dee_place Most of them, yeah. There are some old ones that are impossible to find.
He was a great actor, he was under rated. Love every one of his movies.
Marvellous actor. Loved his movies. Beautiful deep velvet voice. Gorgeous man.
I always thought he was awesome. Great man and actor.
One of my favorite actors of all time. Great Robert Mitchum.
One of the greatest actors of all time
He and Deborah Kerr had that chemistry on film. They were life long friends. RIP
TOP MAN. LOVE HIM READ BOOKS WATCHED ALL HIS FILMS. BEST ACTOR EVER
I always liked him.
He was a great actor with good looks and voice.
Amazing actor! He could scare you silly, as in NIGHT OF THE HUNTER and CAPE FEAR, but he could also reassure you that you were safe with him, as in THE WINDS OF WAR and WAR AND REMEMBRANCE miniseries.
Was night of the hunter the movie where he plays a killer preacher. Scared the shite out of me!!!!!!!!!!
Was terrific in winds of war, remembered as a alpha male who leads soldiers and loved his women
Back in the late forties and early fifties, my mom and I would watch movies from the local TV stations. That's when I 1st saw "his kind of woman", and I think I've seen it at least 6 times since.
I have to see Ryan's daughter, the sun downers, others...
I loved Robert Mitchum's style of acting. He was "cool" long before that word came into vogue.
Most definitely he was
True❤ and a real mans man
Mitchum. McQueen. Marvin. Bronson. These were real tough guys who lead rough & tumble lives. We won't see their sort again.
Gordon M. I haven't read his autobio and I've seen Hunter but not Mrs Allison. But I'll def check them out thanks.

Mitch was "real". One could get so engrossed in his character. Such a wonderful man who cared for others. A rarity.
HE'S ONE OF MY FAVORITES.
Best actor ever! My father looked a lot like him. RIP 7/1/97
He had an "IT" factor, and what a presence, when he appeared on the screen. His voice, well I could listen to him all day. ❤❤😊😊
One of my favorite quotes from an actor: When Mitchum was asked whether he'd ever made a movie with Brando: "Brando's never made a movie with anyone."
no koo u 7 6
Oh, gosh, oh gosh...so true! I detest Marlon Brando as the man he was and as a supposed "great" actor. I'm so glad Mitchum had that insight and put it to such perfect words.
@@victoriajarvis2260 Maybe should watch, 'LISTEN TO ME MARLON.'. Most Misunderstood Actor Ever.
Brando was a child From Abusive Relationship, with a Mean and Nasty Father.
Ha ha ha ha ha! That was a good line he came up with, and I love it, cuz I don't care for Brando, and never did.
I think Brando's motto was.
"ME , MYSELF & I." Since he was so wrapped up in himself. What an ego he had, just sickening!
I loved Robert Mitchum in all his movies. Heaven Knows Mr Allison opened the first multi-theater in Houston, the GulfGate double theater. Great!!!!
What an incredible man.❤
He, Robert Mitchum was nobody's fool.
Loved him when I was young, love him still! ♥️
THose were the days and we thought they would never end RIP Loved him to bit A fine actor
Hello Ann, How are you doing?
A very handsome man an incredible star. His son is like he was
Robert Mitchum also had a quality that its extremely rare, which was that he had a photographic memory. He could read an entire script just once, and have it completely memorized! To me that is incredible! He never wasted anybodys time with re-takes. Other people will verify that. I also loved his mellow and cool personality, never any histerical melodrama with this cool dude. I Love him!
I think I mis-spelled hysterical, I apologize for that. I wasn't thinking right.
He also had a great aptitude for accents ie: Australian, which he almost had.And Irish as well. A GRREAT actor 💖💖
Beautiful Jane Russel laughed when she said Mitchum would call his lines ''lyrics''. ''I HAVE TO LEARN MY LYRICS''.
Spencer Tracy was the same way.
Not to mention his rich masculine voice.
His facial expressions were superb and so naturalp
Perfect voice.
Robert Mitchum Lee Marvin James Coburn all of them had perfect voices.

Underrated actor. It’s nice that they honoured him while he was alive.
Probably my favourite actor of all time, he made it seem so effortless. And so humble about what he did. He said of acting that it was just showing up on time, knowing your lines, your marks, and that's it. But few were as natural and gifted at it as he was.
James Stewart, Clark Gable, John Wayne,Humphrey Bogart ETC !
My favorite is "Out of the Past." Beautiful Eastern Sierra setting, gloriously filmed in black and white and it's great film noir.

My father-in-law abandoned at age 11. Box cars all over Canada and U.S.A. When he met his wife of 63 years it was forever home and called her "mama", but nothing unmanly about this gentleman. More zest for life than 20 something years olds now days.
Some great films in his C.V. He is simply magnificent in 'The Friends of Eddie Coyle". An underrated masterclass in the art of cinema
Robert Mitchum was one of my all time favorite actors. Both personally and professionally. 💋
Love this man. Love Mitchum's version of Philip Marlowe. The wisecracking and cynical private detective.
Oh yes! My two favorite Philip Marlowe actors are Robert Mitchum and Gerald Mohr. Look for Gerald Mohr's rendition of Philip Marlowe, and I think you'll like it. He has a great voice, and attitude or personality!
This generation of actors were like no other. Todays actors could seriously take lessons from these great men.
It wouldn't help. Like Mitchum said, you cant go to school to learn how to be tall.

He may have been a "reluctant star", but he sure was a massive one, in my eyes anyway. I just loved the guy.
Yes. He was inescapably compelling.
Fascinating how much John Mitchum sounded like his brother Robert ! This was a very entertaining & informative documentary ! Thank you so very much for sharing with us ! CHEERS !! :-)
Loved him in Winds of War and War and Remembrance. Really enjoyed the love story of “Pug and Pamela” played by the gorgeous actress Victoria Tennant. He really rocked a navy uniform even in his later years.
I’m going to rewatch the series soon. I watched it on TV. God, where did that time go?
I was only 12 when I saw Not as a Stranger. I am nearly 80 but that film made a stamp on my memory. I thought it was wonderful.. I saw him later in Ryan’s daughter. He had what it takes ❤️
For me "The Night of the Hunter " just terrified me when i first saw it, great movie.
He wasn't full of himself. He seemed so natural.
Exactly - and yet he could have been.
I don't know anything about acting, but if I'm surfing through the channels and I see Mitchum in a movie I'll stop and watch every time.👍
He was one of a kind! He never gave a bad performance. I watch him in all his movies! Wow what a guy! A man in every since of the word! That deep voice! That i don't give a damn attitude and that swagger! And boy could he act. He never won an Oscar. Shame on the Academy, but a lot of great actors never won one either so that says something about the Academy. Robert Mitchum Happy 102nd Birthday! My favorite actor. What a man
Robert Mitchum grew up in a very difficult, yet unique time in this country's history, a time that we will never see again.
Robert Mitchum is realistic, subtle, and understated in Friends of Eddie Coyle, perhaps my favorite of his performances (another favorite is Track of the Cat).

What an interesting story. From Felton and Dover, Delaware of all places. Loved his acting

@@jubalcalif9100 you can't be serious. Robert Mitchum was a brilliant actor and a movie star. But a thespian he wasn't.
@@alexandramassey9258 A thespian is an old fashioned word for an actor. Robert Mitchum was an actor. Neither you nor anyone else has any idea how he'd do if he decided to play Shakespeare. People who knew him have said in interviews over the years that he loved poetry. He was a very sensitive soul. You certainly have a right to disagree.

Then you were fortunate to have had such a dad Dee' good for you.

RHO was sort of a lower ranking studio, less pay, less prestigue,. is a dialogue of two persons.
Yes he was outstanding in that movie~!!!!
what an amazing man he was I lovethat he was so loyal to his wife that was the thing that I find best about him.
Marlene Full actually your wrong he certainly stayed with his wife but had countless affairs
Catch it.
