    As a cyclist, it's well known that wheels and rotational weight makes a huge difference in how quickly bikes accelerate, decelerate, turn in, etc. The lighter weight is exponentially more important when it's on a rotating wheel than on the rest of the bike/car.

    • @robingielkens9795
      @robingielkens9795 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Angular momentum is determined by the moment of inertia, which is quadratic for wheels

    • @pjay3028
      @pjay3028 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      True, although the very large diameter of bicycle wheels and the greater proportion of the overall weight of a bicycle that the wheels contribute (compared to a car) mean the impact of lighter wheels on a bicycle will be hugely more significant.

    It's not just direction change and braking that is improved by lowering the unsprung weight. Acceleration benefits too.
    About a decade ago we did a test with G-Power, the German BMW specialist tuner in Bavaria, to see if lowering the unsprug weight with their forged alloys made a difference to acceleration to speed. With a saving of about 3kg per corner we measured a consistent 0.1 sec improvement in the 0-100mph time with digital test equipment. The explanation for this is that the available power does not have to rotate as much wheel mass off the line and through the speed range.
    As Colin Chapman famously said, "For speed add lightness!"

  • @jeffreykilpatrick3592
    @jeffreykilpatrick3592 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Should have done this as a blind test - put one set on and blindfold the driver until he is in the car - then do it again with the other wheels. Actually do it a bunch of times so you can see if the driver can really determine when the car has the low weight wheels on the car. Obviously there is an emotional bias for any driver to believe the expensive magnesium wheels are “better”. I assume also the tire sizes are the same? Should have put oem tires in both wheel sets .

    I extremely hard to believe- do a real test to truly prove the value of the lighter wheels. Blind drive the different wheels - multiple time and record the times on the track. Then try to identify the expensive mag wheels and then have the track times revealed to see if the facts match your ability to discern the extra speed and. Real value of the magnesium wheels. Ideally have a seasoned Nurburgring pro driver also drive three laps with mag wheels and three with standard wheels- same tires- and find out if Heidi
    Can discern the value of the mag wheels and then if his track times truly improve and by how much with the mag wheels. With this data you can prove conclusively if spending $12,000 on mag wheels are just a status symbol and how much time as a percent off times with steel wheels you are buying for $11,000. You didn’t even mention the comparative track time - you drove on the different wheels. With track times you would need multiple laps to weed out the anomaly lap or two. The question is very interesting to answer of course. another question is does $10,000 for csrbon ceramic brakes really translate into a faster car and can drivers really discern the difference on a track if they don’t know which brakes are on the car.

The suspension has to match the lighter weight, where it didn't do so well with my 997 stock shocks with mag wheels. I don’t understand what ‘unsprung mass’ is with reference to weight saving. It must add to the momentum to overcome m.v (mass Kg x velocity m/s ) when accelerating the wheels, but having more mass must help with high speed cruising on a motorway.
