    What a simple, yet ingenious idea. Thanks for the tip! Stay safe please everybody!

    So I just finished making, and testing this idea on a couple of the straight handles in my house. Worked amazingly well. Thanks again. I did make two small changes, I noticed while bending the clip the steel has a fair amount of spring to it. So instead of a full eyelet, I made a fairly tight tapered hook so I can reverse it without too much trouble, and put shrink tubing over the end to avoid scratching up my tool in the process, the other thing was I wrapped the hook end with shrink tubing as well to try and avoid scratching the door handle itself. Its not the prettiest version, bends aren't all perfect by any means, however that can be addressed in the next version I attempt to make. Love the idea. Thank you again!

    Try using vacuum hose over the straight part of the rod so it will grip the flat handle instead of sliding off

    Great job. Super smart mod, I'll defo be making my own. (even though it's faster I still prefer to pick. It's less noisy, lol. Plus- if someone comes, stashing your pick and wrench on the fly is easy, having someone walk by you when you have your tool under the door= not good. This actually happened to me but I don't think the person knew what the fuck I was doing and said nothing. It helps that I was drunk at the time, lol. )

      It certainly depends, if they have primuses on their doors I will definitely be reaching for the UDT before lock picks ;)

      @@amihirata Just as an idea- On my DDT, once the plastic coating rips off, which it always seems to sooner or later if you have a door with tight tolerances, I used some black epoxy. I don't put it on the sides but only on the touch points so it doesn't add to the width of it- it grips super awesome- better than the plastic coating. Also, you could use the same stuff on the underside of the UDT so that when it engages a flat handle- it'll stay in place better- also works better just on normal lever handles. You should try it- you'll notice the difference right away. You need the tool to be slick pretty much everywhere Except on the part that comes in contact with the handle.

    What I did is replaced the wire with nylon string. Made a loop, and ran the bar through the loop, then I tightened the loop. I pulled the Nylon and the door opens with no slip.

    Im having trouble with one door, but the gap under the door is tiny so I can just press in the udt.. So ha ger add-on wont fit, could this be done with some kevlar wire instead?

    Another situation where an inspection camera/scope would be invaluable as an assistive tool!
    If you had a quiet environment, like an empty indoor hallway (no birds!), would there be significant audible feedback to help indicate you had successfully hooked the handle? It sounds like the tinkle of a glancing miss with the hook sounds different than a successful snag. But in your video we are hearing audio from the interior and in practice getting that feedback might require a stethoscope. That would likely make it impractical, or at least not significantly useful in relation to the cues you get from the tension, nor any better than an inspection camera if you are adding more tools to the exploit. Your thoughts?

    • @amihirata
      @amihirata  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So after some practice you can do it either by audio cues or via physical cues. Really if you get your height right you can literally just shove the under door tool over as far as you possibly can, wait for the hook to stop swinging, and then manually rotate backward to seat the handle. At that point you will very clearly know if you're on or not.

    Great video.
    Just purchased this tool and my first attempt was a bathroom door at my house with straight handles. I was worried about the usefulness of the tool until I found your video series. Do you have a diagram of this particular modification so I can get the dimensions correct? Thanks for your videos they are very useful.

    • @amihirata
      @amihirata  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you.
      The dimensions for the hook should be roughly half an inch stem (straight portion) followed by as large of a semi circle as you can manage (up to 2"). I've found that a 2 inch diameter circle works best, and youll find more success if you make the arc a bit more than 180 degrees.

      @@amihirata so I'm not crazy for trying that exact same thing then? Haha, I just only had the medium ones kicking around, and couldn't make it large enough. Now to find one of the large ones. I must have one somewhere. I think coffee is an order first however.

      @@amihirata Would cutting the top off a metal hanger possibly work rather than the work to get a binder clip into shape? That would ne a nice preformed loop of similar size, though yu might need to bend a bit of a lip right at the end to keep it from sliding off the handle. Since it is narrower than the UDT it doesn't matter that it is thicker than the binder clip as it will still fit under the door if the UDT does. You could slide some heatshrink tubing over the hanger loop and that would add some traction to help you get purchase on the handle. And hopefully not help you get hung up and stuck! With the tubing for traction the extra thickness of the hanger head would then be a significant benefit over the binder clip as you'd have greater surface area for contact. That said, the simplest solution is usually the best one and yours works beautifully!

    • @amihirata
      @amihirata  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ZiggityPow You need something thats pretty strong and resistant to bending (something strong enough that you cant really bend short sections by hand) I'm not fully confident that a clothes hangar is strong enough.
