      Hi T A, thanks for you interest in the video. The seed I used was called ‘Superstar Back Lawn’ from The Grass People. I researched a lot before purchasing and found it to give the most hard-wearing, lush and green lawn. You can buy it from Amazon (www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01FFX21DA/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&creativeASIN=B01FFX21DA&linkCode=as2&tag=thecluelessga-21&linkId=a37002d0576fb3c24909c197a50ab379). I purchased the 20kg bag to do around 210 square metres as I sowed it at 70g per M2 (the bag recommends 50g per M2 but I found this to produce a thicker lawn quicker when used with some growmore fertiliser a few days before sowing the seed)

      Hi, thanks for your interest in the video! Yes it was just several lengths of string stretched across the lawn with silver foil trays attached to reflect the light and deter the birds. We still had a few (as you can see on the video) but they only ate a tiny proportion of the seed (I also seeded at 70g per m2 rather than the recommended 50g per m2 to compensate for any lost to the pigeons)

    This is interesting. I recently redid a patch in my yard. Used to only grow weeds now it's got grass all over it. I'm about 21 days from day of seeding and about 14 from sprouting. It's looking good but I can't wait for it to be thick and blend into the rest of the yard.

      On day 13 and mine is starting to come up sporadically (hydroseed on top of 1-3 inches of fresh loam). I know for me (live in the northeast of the US). The weather has been cold. From what my hydroseed guy told me, low ground temps delay germination. We have barely gone over 60 degrees F in the pat 2 weeks with no rain ad a bunch of wind. Or at least this is what I tell myself to fall asleep...LOL. Did yours pop yet?

      The first two weeks grass seeds use its own energy/power supply; the seed itself. Humidity is needed to initiate grow process. Keep seeds wet in these first two weeks, as only then they can evolve.

Removed loads but as it rains more get uncovered and we’ve had loads of April frosts which are really slowing growth down. I think it’ll need re seeding it’s very patchy 😆

      We must live in the same area. Ugh. The grass is growing quickly but it's sparse. Nightmare soil, rocky, sandy, mountain garbage. Some areas have coal ash that was dumped in the late 19th century considering I find Civil War marbles, glass buttons, hand made nails, old glass bottles, shards of glass. You name it it's there. If I didn't know better and I don't want to, might be a burial cairn too. I'm sure I am mistaken. Lol. I guess I'll be reseeding too. My lawn certainly doesn't look like that in that time span. superb job. So the secret is regular watering.

    • @mrcuboid
      @mrcuboid 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not that simple. Overwatering can mess it up. Under watering can also have bad effects. Then when it comes to seeding you may need to aerate the lawn prior to allow the seeds and nutrients to get into the ground. And of course mowing regularly is the most important. Lots more factors than just regular watering.

  • @trollhunter8842
    @trollhunter8842 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You got full germination on the first seeding. The conditions must have been perfect. Most people have to reseed again after about 3-4 weeks when there are patchy spots that did not germinate due to erratic weather or something else. This is also probably perennial ryegrass which tends to grow a lot faster too and germinate more as well. I'll probably have to dump some ryegrass on my tall fescue to fill in the spots because I'm impatient and I'll probably reseed again in the fall with tall fescue to make it even thicker since ryegrass tend to not do too well in the summer.

    • @someblokecalleddave1
      @someblokecalleddave1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I'm having problems too, mine's been down 10 days or so now and it's starting to look like the opening shot in this vid. I expected it to be a bit more lush after 10 days. Have you re-seeded yet?

    • @trollhunter8842
      @trollhunter8842 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@someblokecalleddave1 I've been reseeding throughout the spring and early summer and it filled out nicely. Better than this video. Then summer hit and killed off a lot of the area which gets 8 hours of sun which is why you seed during the fall for cool season grass so the roots have enough time to dig really deep and survive the summer heat. I'm reseeding again tomorrow since we will get weather in the low 80s and mid 70s for the next couple of weeks. Doubt it will get to the 90s again here in VA. That should give me plenty of time to grow a full lawn again. You'll have to use compost and peat moss if you want really thick lush lawn. Also, you'll need expensive seeds which are resistant to heat, sun, cold, disease, etc. unlike the one you get from home depot and walmart. They also get >90% germination too.

    • @someblokecalleddave1
      @someblokecalleddave1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trollhunter8842 I've done pretty much what you've said here and I've had better conditions on my side as we're at the end of the summer and going through a dull and cool weather pattern at the moment and if anything the lack of light might be an issue? I spoke to my sister in law this morning who's done a repair job on her lawn recently and she said that the grass didn't really get going for 3 weeks and she initially thought it hadn't taken, so maybe I'm being a little impatient? I'll give it another week or so and see what happens. If I end up having to dig it over again that's not too much of an issue as if I then re-seed it'll be during the optimum time here in the UK. Cheers for you reply by the way. VA... Virginia?

    • @trollhunter8842
      @trollhunter8842 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@someblokecalleddave1 It really depends on what grass type you use. The video is ryegrass which germinates within 3-5 days. I use fescue which grows within 5-10 days depending on the quality of seed. It sounds like you are using bluegrass or similar species which can take 3 weeks to germinate. I don't think the lack of sunlight is an issue. My front yard is covered in trees and the lawn is picture perfect throughout the summer. Fescue can grow in sunlight or shade and the shade protects it from too much heat during the summer. Since you're living in the UK I would use ryegrass which germinates fast and a lot, especially if you're impatient. I'm from Virginia which is a transition zone so there's only cool season grass type that does well. Although, my neighbor has bermuda grass which is infiltrating into my lawn and loves the summer heat.

    So satisfying to watch! Would like complete watering schedule you did for the first month, second month and there after please. Also would like the fertilizer with NPK values you may have applied after 4 to 6 weeks and the schedule there after (with the changed NPK). Have fun with the new lawn :)

      We were going through a heatwave when I sowed the seed so I was having to water quite frequently - Twice a day for the first week or so until all the seed had germinated, to make sure the ground never dried out. After that I moved to watering to once a day for the next couple of weeks, then every other day for about the next month (gradually getting less as the lawn was well established and had had been mown a few times). When I prepared the area I rotavated the existing soil and added 30 tonnes of new topsoil to give around 10cm depth of decent soil, to which I added some chicken manure pellets, which have an npk of 4.5-3.5-2.5. A few days before sowing the seed I added some growmore fertiliser to the surface layer, which has an npk of 7-7-7. After sowing the lawn I didn't add any further fertiliser after that for at least a few months

    I just recent seeded my backyard, the area I wanted grass only had maybe 1/8 of the spot with grass & the rest was sand and hard compacted soil. I tilled it roughly 2-3 inches on top and spread the see & watered it in. Hopefully in 10-14 days I’ll have a back yard full of grass lol

      SuperSod has a video of growing Zenith Zoysia on their site. Something like 52 days of growth in 60 seconds, with day 1 being the day they planted the seed. It was something like a 24x24 inch box. It's a very satisfying video, and to be honest, I saw germination a day faster in my lawn than the SOD/Seed company did in their video. It's amazing how much growth can happen some days with a single blade of grass. I put some Rye in a 600 sq. ft. test bed last August and I saw the first shoots of grass in 50 hours, and the soil test showed what crap the soil was, but the nitrogen and phosphorus were excellent somehow. The photos I took at 24 hours after these grass shoots were first visible to 26 hours was crazy. Many of the plants looked like they had nearly doubled in height over a 2 hour period. Looking back, I'd never believe it if I hadn't been looking at the time stamp on my cell phone photos.

      The seed is called ‘Superstar Back Lawn’ from The Grass People. I researched a lot before purchasing and found it to give the most hard-wearing, lush and green lawn. I purchased the 20kg bag to do around 210 square metres, as I sowed it at 70g per M2 rather than the recommended 50g per M2, which helped to produce a thicker lawn quicker (when used with some growmore fertiliser a few days before sowing the seed). Sowing a bit extra also helped to offset any seed lost to hungry pigeons! Be interested to hear how you got on with yours?
