@@lynnkernighan First of all, his name is spelled Perkins, secondly it's spelled "rights". And MOST importantly, you're wrong. It was composed by Bob Berryhill, Pat Connolly, Jim Fuller and Ron Wilson. All 4 of which made up the members of The Surfaris. The tune was first performed and recorded by the Surfaris, who became famous with the single in 1963. And I'd like to point out that it was the version by The Surfaris that got inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

He would come into my store to ship things to friends and family and give out 2008 Hall of Fame guitar picks to those who would recognize him. He always came in with a grin and lively step, wearing his iconic cowboy hat with a grand feather and silver band. He gifted me with some autographed CD's to pass to family and friends. Clearly the Ventures were using two drummers for this, as did the Surfaris, and if you watch the video of the Edgar Winter Group performing "Frankenstein", they had a second partial drum kit set up so that Edgar Winter could drop in to duet on the drums among the three very different instruments he plays during that piece. (keyboard, saxophone, and drums).

Yet another rabbit hole you two get to dive into. The Ventures, Dick Dale, Jan and Dean, The Surfari's, and the Beach Boys were all over the radio when I was in high school in Long Beach, CA. Later I was in the Air Force in Japan from 1965 to 1967 and found out not only were the Ventures huge in Japan they lived there and were doing a show not far from the base so of course we went because I was also the organ player in my first band. With the music still going the drummer did a solo to Pipeline and got up while still playing, walked around his drum kit hitting everything in sight with his sticks, the edge of the drums, the cymbals, stands, a beer bottle, (literally) and ended up playing a bass solo! The bass player held the strings to the frets to get the notes as the drummer tapped the strings with his sticks.
Our drummer copied that and we learned all the Ventures hit songs. We played all the bars in AP Alley along with the NCO Club and the O Club. That's how I got started gigging professionally. The USO booked us for a 5 day tour around Japan. They wanted us for a month but 5 days was all the leave we could all get at the same time. This was all due to us copying the Ventures hits very well along with their showmanship. We did other bands of course but were primarily a Ventures and surfing cover band.
About 15 years ago they came back to California for a summer tour and played the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach so I got to see them again. At that time I was also playing the Lighthouse in a funky 7 piece horn band you guys would have liked. James Brown, AWB, all that stuff. Their drummer did the same drum and bass solo I saw in Japan 20 years earlier and I got to tell them my little story. They all had a good laugh and said they still lived in Japan.

We ❤ the 60's! Jay and Amber, I'd like to take your imagination to the streets and beaches of southern California, and introduce you to "The Little Old Lady (from Pasadena)" by Jan & Dean. This 1964 hit was inspired by the SoCal street racing culture of that time. Whether you were a high school teenager getting your first set of wheels in Santa Monica, or a little old lady driving down from Pasadena, the road belonged to those who were willing to burn some rubber (responsibly of course).

Back in the 60's my buddy "Skeeter" was the school champion playing Wipe Out on the desk. I could play it on guitar and one day the teach let me Jam with Skeeter in class. When finished the teacher just stared with her mouth wide open and the class laughed at her reaction. That was over half a century ago and i'll never forget it. This was 5th grade BTW.

This is fantastic! True story- the Ventures are musical heroes of mine. Hearing them for the first time inspired me to learn guitar. in 1980, around the time of this video, my band got to open for them at a show in Virginia. They heard us play, and afterwards their manager asked me to be the announcer for them when they came onstage! It was a dream come true.

When Mel Taylor, the Ventures main drummer shown here, passed from cancer in 1996 he was replaced by his son. And Mel's older brother played bass for Canned Heat. The band's original drummer had to drop out because he was too young to play in clubs. So he joined the Air Force and retired as a 4 star General.

The song "Wipe Out" was originally written by my friend Merrell Fankhauser, and recorded by his band The Impacts.
Fankhauser on his song, "The recording and release of the "Wipe Out" album on Del Fi records was quite a lesson for the entire band. It was recorded in a studio in L.A. where many of the early Surf groups recorded including "The Challengers". The drummer for that group , Richard Delvy was in our session and heard our versions of "Wipe Out" & "Blue Surf". He later went on to manage, publish and produce "The Surfaris" who recorded songs titled "Wipe Out" & "Blue Surf" that both had some reseblence to our songs...
We never received any royalties for our album or the various compilation albums we were on despite Del Fi owner Bob Keen's claim that our album was a good seller. We later recorded a second version of "Wipe Out" in Janurary of 63' with more drum solos that was supposed to come out on a 45 single but never did? The Surfaris "Wipe Out" was copyrighted in Richard Delvy's publishing company in May of 63' !
We got a real life lesson in the music biz real quick. I studied contracts and learned how to copyright my songs and vowed I would never let that happen again ! In 1994 the copyright expired on all The Impacts songs with Anthony Music and I re copyrighted all our songs and secured the rights back. Today the Impacts album is out on CD on Collectors Choice Records."

Every garage band in the 60s had to learn to play this because it definitely would be requested. The Surfari's originated it and did it with one drummer. I keep mentioning for drums you need to react to the original beast, Gene Krupa. "Sing Sing Sing, with a Swing", 1938 live at Carnegie Hall. It changed the trajectory of music in the USA and introduced jazz / swing to the masses.
