I have the 16, and the 56. The 56 pretty much stays on my camera, and the 16 is primarily a guitar-video lens for me. I don't really like the 24 FF equivalent FOV for photography that much, as it causes distortion on the edges and on faces if you get close. The FOV is also similar to most smartphone cameras, which I find uninspiring. I've considered swapping it out for the 23, as this makes for a "tidier" composition in circumstances like street photography etc and is all-round a very versatile FOV even for various distance portraits. I've however recently been inspired by other youtube-photographers using wide lenses creatively for different types of environmental portraits, so I'll give it a second chance going forward.
I bought a Viltrox 23mm for my Sony A6400 just to have that 35mm look, but i'm not fully satisfied with it. Hope to see a comparision between these two lenses. Great work!
As far as prime lenses go - I think the trio was enough for apsc shooters who are mainly hobbyists. What we NEED is a good telephoto (for wildlife and recreational sports) in a compact body having IBIS at an affordable price.
definetly needing some nice tele zooms for APSC I think the 23mm was exactly fits perfectly though. 35mm FF equivalent is extremly popular and fights for first place against 50mm. Only issue is now, that the 30mm 1.4 is a but to close to it. 23mm + 35mm (or 33mm) would have made the perfect 35mm + 50mm (55mm) combo, this way we have a 35mm and a 45mm which feels just a tiny but to close to each other. not a fan of the combo with the 56mm I think, it's a bit too much tele .
@@Samura1_Man Overall the 18-300 is optically an excellent lens. I did shoots when the bees came to my bush that finally put out thousands of small pink blossoms. That lens with the new a6700 body is unbeatable. Was able to get many great shots of bees digging into the blossoms and in flight (which is a task). I was amazed at the quality of images it produced. Only thing is the zooming is rough, but smoothing out over time.
Exciting news! Perhaps next will be an update of Sigma's 16mm F1.4. Something smaller and lighter, but half the price of Sony's 15mm F1.4. I have the Viltrox 23mm F1.4 and it's very sharp indeed. However it lost partial communication with camera body after 18 months. Firmware updates didn't help. Thank goodness I can still use it by setting the aperture ring. So I will continue to use the Viltrox but wishing it had Sigma focusing performance. Thank you Arthur for keeping your channel on You Tube.
Hello Arthur from Italy! "Trio" is an Italian word... so I think we should use the word "quartetto" now that the lenses are 4. Jokes apart, thank you for the first look review.
Hi Arthur. I really enjoy viewing, and are influenced by your videos. Can you eventually do a comparison of the Sigma 16mm F1.4 and the 23mm F1.4? I may be incorrect but I think the 16mm is much sharper than the 23mm.
Thank you. Looking at this lens again to complete my APS-C lens line up even though I shots full frame as well. I don’t have the 16mm ( own Sony’s 15/1.4 G) but do have their 30/1.4 and 56/1.4. Also own their 10-18/2.8 now and the 18-50/2.8 zooms. Really make he Sony A6700 a complete system if that’s the direction you want to go in. Take care.
I’m about to get a A6700 and I’m gonna get this and the sigma 56, I shoot portraits and headshots and I think that combo will be great. May I ask, as a total newbie to Sony (I’m Fuji right now)…how did you get it to focus on the book and not her face at 3:15 mark? Can I map a custom button to turn off and on eye and face detect and if there’s no joystick, can I use the dial to select a focus point or will it automatically focus on closest object? Also, TRIO…would you go 23, 30, 56 for portraits? Also, are you using presets to get these insane colors?
I have the Sony F1.8, 24 mm on my a6500, 95% of the time. It’s really a nice lens. I bought the Sigma F1.4, 30 mm lens first, which is really an equivalent 45 mm with the 1.5 crop factor. I used it a little, but it was to close for indoor work at family gatherings. So it has just be collecting dust. I was thinking of the Sigma F2.8, 18-50 mm (27-75 equivalent) but not certain it would have any great advantage for me indoors since my Sony 24 mm is F1.8 (it would help give a wider field of view). With clear image zoom on prime lenses my Sony 24 mm allows me to zoom to 48 mm (72mm equivalent) so its pretty close to the Sigma 75 mm equivalent. Only great advantage might be lower light situations and wider field of view. Get I could trade in my Sony 24 mm and Sigma 30 mm and get close to the price for the Sigma 18-50 mm, but it would not give me the same low light performance. Thanks for the video. I appreciate your reviews.
I've owned the Viltrox 23mm F/1.4 since it's release and works as my main lens on my ZV-E10. Not sure why folks are not doing comparisons. Actually I opted for the Viltrox line of APSC 1.4's over Signma because I thought they had better quality for the price than Signma. That Viltorx 13mm is epic.
I bought the 250 usd Viltrox 23mm 1.4. Perfectly satisfied for shooting TH-cam videos! Finally Sigma has filled the void for a fast 1.4 35mm equiv. from a premium brand.
This lens arrives tomorrow, will add it to my Sony 15mm F1.4 and the Sigma 56mm f1.4. My new Sony A6700 arrives on Friday, so I know what I will be doing this weekend!
Literally just got an FX30 yesterday. I own an a6400 but definitely considering selling to get the 67. Definitely love your channel because I’ve been using mostly sony apsc since starting photography
Looks like a great lens, but I already have the 18-50 2.8, and I would need a prime outside that focal range. Probably gonna get the viltrox 13 1.4 as it’s their best lens
I'm eyeing up the 18-50 2.8 for street photography as I'm getting a little tired of switching lenses as often as I currently need to. How do you find it?
I think getting the sony 11 1.8 is also a good option due to its size and wider view. Although it's 2/3 stop slower and a bit more expensive, u get better auto focus performance. My go to combo is Sony 11, Sigma 1850, and Sigma 56, which is best for me🔥
@@hsi1029 Nice combo! So I have the Rokinon 12mm f2 for ultrawides. I know it's not the best performer but I bought it years ago when it was a solid option. Also have the Sigma 30mm which is super sharp. I have considered buying the 56mm Sigma too but to carry less lenses, this is where the 18-50 might make more sense.
1st: done! 2nd: patiently waiting, too! A 90mm F1.4 would be such a killer! I bet the size would be close to the 16mm F1.4, but that'd be TINY compared to all the FF 135mm F1.8/F2.0 out there!
I probably wouldn't go for this one. I think being a trio-owner myself, I do not feel the need for any more primes. Plus, it's a pain to keep switching lenses, so I think I'll end up buying the 18-50mm f2.8 for versatility.
What do you think? Sigma 23mm f1.4, Viltrox 23mm f1.4 or ZEISS 24mm f1.8. I can get used ZEISS without lens hood for 250 euro. But I don't know if autofocus in ZEISS is good enough for street photography.
I’m not sure if $550 is a good price though. It’s the most expensive of the lineup. On FF you can get the actual 35mm from Sanyang/Rokinon FE mount for much less. And that lens has received a lot of praise saying it performs extremely close to the $750 Sony variant
As I am interested in having a 35mm f/2 FF equiv lens, on APS-C, I was so close to getting the Viltrox 23mm 1.4, which is cheaper, has an aperture ring, but as reviewed by many, and as standard for many Viltrox cheap APS-C primes (so NOT the Viltrox 75mm 1.2, which is in a class of its own), there is visible LOCA wide open, among others. I've always admired the Sigma DC DN 56mm f/1.4 for its sharpness and small size, but the 30mm f/1.4 has been quite "meh" for me, as it's optically inferior to the 56, and also it's a not wide enough focal length for me. The Viltrox (looked now again at some pixel peening reviews) seems all over the place with purple fringing in the center, wide-open. The Sigma is perfect optically in the center, and better than the Viltrox in the corners too. So kudos to Sigma! Too bad they didn't add an aperture ring on it...
I wish it had a higher magnification. And a 55mm filter would be nice because that's more common on Sony/Minolta lenses e.g. the 18-135 for E-mount that I bought with the A6400.
That's difficult to tell others. Here are my thoughts. Apart from preferred focal lengths, 16 and 30 are probably easier to get on the used market because the 23 is just released. If you prefer small lenses, there's also a much older trio of 2.8 primes with 19, 30 and 60mm. 16mm: When I switched from (A-mount) 18-55 to the Zeiss 16-80 I noticed a big difference at the wide end. It starts to look like wide angle shots. But usually that's too wide. And wide angles in general can make it difficult to keep unwanted things outside the frame. 19mm: Based on the Sony 20mm pancake that I have that's just wide without the wide angle look. Of course you can get close with a lot of background and it's good in buildings or when somethin is close. As far as I know that's also what smartphone cameras have so it's somehow boring. 30mm: The first prime I bought (for APS A-mount) was 35mm that I didn't like because it often was too long e.g. in buildings. But I liked a 40mm on a (film) SLR very much and if you draw the line between long and wide at focal length equal to sensor diagonal, 30mm is quite close. 23mm: After I also didn't like the Sony 20mm/2.8 (although the 20mm pancake is always on my Nex) I bought a used Minolta 24/2.8 and I like that. On my smaller A-mount camera there's usually the 24mm or the 50mm Minolta macro.
Nice to see another lens from Sigma. I had the Viltrox 23mm 1.4 too check if the focal length was something for me and just upgraded last year to the fuji 23mm 1.4 wr. So this lens will not be for me, but the portraits looked nice. For the Leica and Sony systems it will probably be a no brainer if you like the focal length. Note that I found the Viltrox 1.4 more a 2.0 since the optical defects were too much for me at 1.4. With the Fuji I dont have this anymore.
I'm so sad I didn't see this before purchasing the viltrox 23 1.4. it's been a good lens so I'm it TOO chuffed but it still stings not to have the complete set. Just need that 56 now!
I'm curious to know if someone already tried this lens on full frame camera, like a7iii or a7riv in crop mode and how it is, better than the 35mm F1.8 from Sony or the gm séries ?? :D
It is between the Samyang 24 f1.8 and the Sigma 23 f1.4 for me. The Samyang could be used on the Full Frame, but the Sigma is 2/3rds of a stop faster. The Samyang is better weather sealed. Both lenses seem to be sharp and able to produce great sun stars. They are priced similarly too. The Samyang is probably lighter. Difficult to decide.
Thanks to sigma the Sony APS-C lineup is just unreal for the price to performance from these lenses...now only if Sony could release an APS-C camera that I'd actually want to use😭
Yes I am waiting for this lens for a long time. But I don't like the size, I sold my 30mmF1.4 just because it's not like a street photography lens. Would Sigma made a 23mmF1.8 or F2.8 pancake lens, just like Panasonic Lumix 20mmF1.7? And like you mentioned, the price was unexpected.
Please compare it to the Sony Zeiss 24mm F1.8. I have this lens and really curious how it compares. Sony dropped the price of the Zeiss, and this is a more expensive Sigma, so they are closer in price than one would initially assume. The Sigma is still $250 cheaper.
I have the Sony Zeiss 24 also, and at 8 oz, it is going to be noticeably more compact than this new 12 oz and 3" long lens. I feel the Sony is more handy than the Sigma 30 I have, and the new 23 is larger still. Having said that, I think we can be certain the new 23 will be sharper to the edges, and I would love to have it too, but it's a bit different, and the Sony is very sharp and focuses very close - it's been a great lens but still overpriced at $800 at B&H now IMO.I bought it for $800 European model six years ago.
Just bought this lense last week. Before I had the Sigma 56mm. This one as well as the 56mm have an outstandig quality in my opinion, but with this 23mm I now have the advantage to shoot a wider area 🤩My best lense sofar 🙂
Interesting - did not expect this. I've got the trio already but would consider trading in the 30mm (which I think is the weakest of the three) for this one. But then I also have the 18-50mm which pretty much covers it all and is my favorite Sigma lens for APS-C. Not a straightforward decision.
Yes, it's hard. I also have the 18-50 mm and use it all the time. Sometimes I switch to the 56 mm 1.4 for portraits. I would like to have 1.4 in some situations, but I don't like to switch lenses all the time. I think we need a nice 16-60 mm 1.4 lens, cheap and light weight. But this is probably not possible. ;-)
Is the 16mm too wide for your taste? Is the 35mm too tight for many of your situations? Then: yes. Otherwise: maybe not. I found the 16mm too wide, and the 35mm too tight (sold both), so 23mm will probably be my sweet spot!
Hello Arthur. I always enjoy watching good videos. I'm asking you a question because I have a concern. I'm going to use it mainly for night shoots. Which lens is better compared to samyang 24mm f1.8. Based on the a6700 camera. I'm even more concerned about the addition of AF-C performance improvement and AF assist function on the a6700 among the updates in Samyang 24mm firmware version.4.
I am surprised it has barrel distortion. In my canon M50 kit lens 15-45mm at above 18mm I don't see much of distortion. Only at the wide angle 15-17mm. This lens is like my canon 22mm lens and I thought it should have straight lines and no distortion. I was under impression than anything above 24mm FF equivalent has no distortion that is why most zoom lenses start at 24mm not wider.
As a 35mm-look lover the only problem I’ve found with the Sigma trio has been the lack of 23mm. Unfortunately I’ve jumped ship to Fuji and currently enjoying their 23mm 1.4, but this lens looks amazing!
Considering that type of DYNAMIC MODE of stabilization on the ZV-E1 (imagine it as well on a ZV-10 Mark II) so they need to offer wider and bright lenses. I was a fullframe shooter for a decade but ok I can step back to APSC for personal use, but not with that lenses. On fullframe my favorite angles are around 18mm and 28mm. Give me one wide f/2.0 and more options on the 1.4 size. That's it.
Can we get a comparison video of this and the viltrox 23mm wide open. The only comparison I’ve seen you do of the viltrox 23 is with the Sony 16-55 at f2.8.
Not bad, I was prepared to be mad because I recently bought the Sigma 24 FF to pair with my FX30 (APSC sensor) for my gimbal. But given the price, I would pay the extra $250 for the FF lens anyway. But it is 7 ounces lighter. So if I was buying to day, it would be a tough decision.

I think I’d love to try the focal length, but kinda difficult to argue when you already have the 16mm and 30mm
Yep
Definitely getting one to pair with the Sigma 18-50mm. Excellent travel pair
I bought a Viltrox 23mm for my Sony A6400 just to have that 35mm look, but i'm not fully satisfied with it. Hope to see a comparision between these two lenses. Great work!
What do you not like about it?
@@NeoRimeOnline I bet on the corner sharpness and huge chromatic aberration...
@@PatrickWithCamera That's it. And the aperture ring moves to easily.
this is THE lens that wanted!
glad that I waited instead of getting the Viltrox one!
Glad to have this available as an option. It is the one prime focal length i most want and use.
As far as prime lenses go - I think the trio was enough for apsc shooters who are mainly hobbyists. What we NEED is a good telephoto (for wildlife and recreational sports) in a compact body having IBIS at an affordable price.
f1.8 please.
Tamron 18-300 is about all we get, its around $600 but its also like f/3.4-6.5. I picked one up last month its not a bad lens for the price and APS-C
definetly needing some nice tele zooms for APSC
I think the 23mm was exactly fits perfectly though.
You know the 70-350 exists right? Not sure how much smaller you could make a telephoto.
can you do a comparison of this and Viltrox? Sigma 23mm vs Viltrox 23mm
Sir please inform ...best lenses to shot videos on FX 30 and EV 10 ( for documentries and short films/ films) also buget friendly 💐🤚
Oh, and only $259 when I bought it with a discount, but still under $300.
I tested 3 Viltrox and they wouldn't compare to my 30mm I just ordered the sigma 23mm and will test the best of the 3 viltrox against the sigma.
I bought the 250 usd Viltrox 23mm 1.4. Perfectly satisfied for shooting TH-cam videos! Finally Sigma has filled the void for a fast 1.4 35mm equiv. from a premium brand.
Note that the L-mount and X-mount versions of the 30mm do have sealing
23 and 56 duo is all you need
This lens arrives tomorrow, will add it to my Sony 15mm F1.4 and the Sigma 56mm f1.4. My new Sony A6700 arrives on Friday, so I know what I will be doing this weekend!
Please do a comparison with the Viltrox 23mm
Does anyone know of a 23mm lens with image stabilization?
Literally just got an FX30 yesterday. I own an a6400 but definitely considering selling to get the 67. Definitely love your channel because I’ve been using mostly sony apsc since starting photography
comparisons with sony zeiss 24mm f1.8? the 2nd hand price of it is really sweet now
A comparison a6400 + sigma 23mm f1.4 vs a7C + sigma 35mm/2.0 would be interesting.

Any Motor noise when autofocus?
My vilitrox 23mm is super noisy in video mode
Looks like a great lens, but I already have the 18-50 2.8, and I would need a prime outside that focal range. Probably gonna get the viltrox 13 1.4 as it’s their best lens
I'm eyeing up the 18-50 2.8 for street photography as I'm getting a little tired of switching lenses as often as I currently need to. How do you find it?
@@Undeadwolfy_ I use it literally every day all the time. Just get it, you’ll never use anything else 😂
@@hsi1029 I use the same combo except for the 56mm (I sold it). Do you really miss 6mm focal length on the 18-50? When do you still need the 56mm?
We need a wide angle Sigma DC DN C lens as well as a 135mm equivalent (90mm aps-c).
1st: done!
2nd: patiently waiting, too! A 90mm F1.4 would be such a killer! I bet the size would be close to the 16mm F1.4, but that'd be TINY compared to all the FF 135mm F1.8/F2.0 out there!
Great review as always! Been using the 23mm for a few months and it's been great except the heavy focus breathing while filming
I probably wouldn't go for this one. I think being a trio-owner myself, I do not feel the need for any more primes. Plus, it's a pain to keep switching lenses, so I think I'll end up buying the 18-50mm f2.8 for versatility.
Is this available for fuji mount?
What do you think? Sigma 23mm f1.4, Viltrox 23mm f1.4 or ZEISS 24mm f1.8.
I can get used ZEISS without lens hood for 250 euro. But I don't know if autofocus in ZEISS is good enough for street photography.
i'd love to see how this lens performs on full frame (cropped...or clear zoomed in)
I’m not sure if $550 is a good price though. It’s the most expensive of the lineup. On FF you can get the actual 35mm from Sanyang/Rokinon FE mount for much less. And that lens has received a lot of praise saying it performs extremely close to the $750 Sony variant
Recall that full-frame lenses perform differently on non full-frame camera sensors.
Can't wait for the Fuji release to get it for my XT5. Nice first impression. I just wish it had an aperture ring!
I wish it had a higher magnification. And a 55mm filter would be nice because that's more common on Sony/Minolta lenses e.g. the 18-135 for E-mount that I bought with the A6400.
I have the 56mm version already, from the 16, 23, and 30mm which should i get and why?🙏
Get the 23 mm, I is he most general purpose. Of course your individual preferences matter.
Can you do a viltrox 23 vs Sigma 23 vs Sony ZA comparison? I own the viltrox but i’m not loving it SO much
Thank you for the review, Arthur!
Off topic (mabe) q; I have both kit lenses but want a small, light, tele. lens for backpacking/ landscapes. Any suggs? Thanks!
Sorry, smaller than the 18-135 sony...
Have the Sigma 16mm 1.4 which is my go to lens .....next up is the 28-70mm 2.8
I'm so sad I didn't see this before purchasing the viltrox 23 1.4. it's been a good lens so I'm it TOO chuffed but it still stings not to have the complete set. Just need that 56 now!
I have the Trio and wanted a 35mm equivalent and it is here now. I ordered it.
Hi, Arthur. Do you have an old Sony Zeiss 24mm 1.8 apsc? To make a comparison?
I don’t! I’ll see if i can find a used one.
Can’t wait for Sigma to release this on Canon’s EF-M mount.
Sigma could make a light 10mm or 11mm f1.4 first for vlogging. I have 16mm but very heavy and not wide enough.
I know it is out of your usual area, but I'd love to see a real world comparison of the new Sony 20-70mm f4 and the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8.
Thank you for doing the review. May I ask how does it compare to the Zeiss 24mm F/1.8 lens you tested years ago?
Hate that I bought the Sony Zeiss 24mm F1.8 a few months ago... It's an awesome lens but only 1.8. Damn... 😅
But this is probably not possible. ;-)
@@maxmeier787 well, you have the Sigma 18-35 1.8, but not for Fuji
Why did u say 30mm is the weakest one?
i have sony 35mm (APSC) and Sigma 16mm. Do you think i need this lens?
Is the 16mm too wide for your taste? Is the 35mm too tight for many of your situations? Then: yes. Otherwise: maybe not. I found the 16mm too wide, and the 35mm too tight (sold both), so 23mm will probably be my sweet spot!
2:02 is that a mm200? 😁
big and heavy. I am looking for used compact zeiss 24F1.8.
Compare it with the Viltrox 23 f1.4 please
Want to get one, used market seems to have settled abit now.
Great review, can you consider to compare this new Sigma with Viltrox 23mm f1.4?
I just bought today the Sigma 30mm F1.4 should I give it back and take the 23mm ?
No bro
How much did you pay? The Sigma 30mm is significantly cheaper (and still a great lens!)
@@ArthurR I payed around 300€ and I already have the 56mm F1.4
EOS-M Version?
Just got this lense today. I like it!
@Oldman666 There is a fujifilm XF 23mm f1.4 R ; look it up
switching to fuji would be amazing for me! which camera did u buy?
@Oldman666 there's two 23.1.4 and one f2
Sony's APSC is literally the best camera system due to the Sigma lenses. My goto is a 6400 with a sigma 56 F1.4
Same here!
Same here. The 56 is sharp as hell. I love it
I love the Viltrox 23mm and won't be upgrading quickly. Maybe if I find it for a good price on the used market in a year or two.
That's it.
This or the Sony Sonnar T* E 24mm f/1.8 ZA Lens?
Like to see its comparison with sigma 16mm.
Why this lens is so costly?
I would like to have this for M4/3. I hope Sigma will make it.
This lens is so sharp .
I love sigma
since Canon EF
Can we get a comparison video of this and the viltrox 23mm wide open. The only comparison I’ve seen you do of the viltrox 23 is with the Sony 16-55 at f2.8.
Not bad, I was prepared to be mad because I recently bought the Sigma 24 FF to pair with my FX30 (APSC sensor) for my gimbal. But given the price, I would pay the extra $250 for the FF lens anyway. But it is 7 ounces lighter. So if I was buying to day, it would be a tough decision.
Perfect vlogging lens
